NM UNIT 34 MUZZY

I drew a unit 34 muzzy tag and was looking for any help. Ive never hunted new mexico before. Can you use atv in lincoln national forest. Is a realistic goal 340. I already have maps on their way. I cant wait to start studying them.

ATV is a waste of time. Roads are in good shape and there is one in every canyon.

wills canyon, russia canyon, water conyon, benson ridge. Lots of elk if you get off the road and hump it.

I also drew the same tag and I'm just praying for rain so we get to hunt at all. The LNF is closed right now and it will take some good rains to open it up. With God's will, monsoons usually kick in around July and we might get good rains.

If all goes well, there are lots of elk up there. I don't score antlers (partly ignorance and partly not giving a chit aabout antlers), but I have picked up some nice sheds this year - 6x6 set, 7x7 set and three singles. Search "shed success" in shed hunting forum for pics...

Like what WB said - there are lots of people and lots of road hunters. There is a road or quad trail in almost every single canyon in 34. Its great when you are working to get on a good bull and somebody comes riding along during prime time.

Hopefully for you the forest stays closed until Sept. A couple years ago when it closed down there were elk everywhere for awhile until all the traffic hit again.

340 not unrealistic but they ain't behind every tree either. You should be able to get a low 300's if you hunt it hard enough and get off that wheeler. The only problem this year is going to be horn growth. It was as dry as I've ever seen it this year the last time I was up there before the closure.

Hunted 34 last year in December with the late season left over archery tag. Saw a 150 elk 26 bulls. One we dubbed Mr. Ivory Tips one of the biggest bulls I have ever seen outside of Yellowstone!
