Well, I finally drew the big game combo on my fourth attempt. I am looking at unit 151. I have four horses and was thinking about packing in somewhere. What do you guys think? Would this be a good unit for a mixed bag hunt? I have not narrowed it down to a specific destination yet. I have never killed a branch antlered bull(couple spikes in WA) and would like to try the rifle bugle hunt in that unit. And of course, I would also be looking for a decent muley.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Mike Henne

It has an early season rifle hunt for elk. Not many do and it seems like it should be a good area geographically. I have been looking at few drainages that look elky but I have never been there. I have always read about "The Bob". I am a wilderness hunter at heart. Most of my hunts are pack in. I have my own wall tent and stove, etc.

I know guys that have hunted the Bob for early season elk. A tough, tough hunt. Myself, I've never been. Too much other great elk country in Montana. "Easier" country, if you will. If the wilderness hunt is your deal, the Bob Marshall is the place. Be grizzly aware when you go. Good luck, mtmuley

If it took you 4 tries then you have bad luck or I have very good luck, I applied in 06 & 07 and drew the big game combo both tries.
We hunted the Tobacco Root Range and the Ruby Range in restricted areas and saw lots of elk, no real big ones but lots of branch antlered bulls. All my research kept pointing me to Region 3. If you have horses I would do some research on the Pioneer Range, thats where I want to go next time I go to MT.

Well thanks guys. I am not set on any unit yet. Still in the research phase. I would love to hear more opinions and advice. And yes, it did take me FOUR years to draw. I know I am damn unlucky in MT. Funny thing, The first time I applied to WY region G I drew. Have not drawn since. But I have only been collecting points since they started there point system.

I use to guide in the youngs creek drainage in the south western end of the bob. The hunting was getting a lot better with bigger bulls but it is hard hunting pack in on horses but 95% of the hunting is on foot in thick steep country. But the bulls are there.
