I post this because I know very little about the buck or the hunter.
It may or may not have been taken illegally , I do not know.
The gentleman that gave me the picture told me the hunter was (name deleted) and the animal was 50" plus. 52" is what he told me.
The animal was taken on the Ut/AZ border.

I am looking for opinions and facts if there are any out there.
I have never seen a 50" typical and if so it would be a record I'm sure. Notcie how the hunter is holding the rack out.
The picture I have does not look to be doctored but appears to be larger than life the way he is holding it. Maybe just a creative photo.

What are your opinions?
Myth probably ? Come on experts.. post up.

Just Curious..

*edit*... looking close it has to be a chop, the shadows are wrong and his elbows look furry .. I can send a full size pic if someone wants to look at a much bigger sized photo.
post your e-mail
I just looked up the guys name since you mentioned Kanab and his name , addy and phone is there.
Wonder if I should call.. the story gets better btw of how he obtained it but I don't want to be the source of a rumor. Maybe a phone call is in order to get facts.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-05 AT 12:45PM (MST)[p]Never seen this picture anywhere else before, looks like the real thing, but maybe a fake set or 125% of the original rack.

Interesting though, thanks for posting.

I would guess it's a bondo buck. Ut/Az? Maybe, I know a few guys in Kanab like to make those bondo bucks.

Skull plate looks awful big against his belly but sure looks real other than that. I'm betting on a photoshop buck. Don't think that one, if real, could have been kept quiet.

Manny,
Bondo is what they use to use and probably still do to fill in on body work on autos. 40 years ago they use to use Lead.

I still think it is a reproduction and made larger than the original bucks antlers. A couple of years ago there was another HUGH Buck being held by a fella and turned out to be a work carving of a set by a fella in Idaho and done at something like 125% of the real set.

7 inch bases, 36 inch main beams, 25 inch G-2s..... fake rack all the way. Too bad some hussy dame with a fake rack herself wasn't holding on to the bone. Cass just informed me that he killed a blacktail this year that was just about as big as this doctored rack. And the one that got away was even larger!

As a photographer who spends a lot of time editing pictures this print is not doctored, whether or not the horns are real I can't say. But, the picture has not been messed with. It looks like a 1 hour photo lab print which was scanned on a flatbed scanner. If any PS work was done it would be tremendously obvious when it was blown up on your screen. Also the shadows are legit behind the tines. Those shadows will occur when the camera is facing the subject and the subject is too close to a background (a wall). Robert King could not have doctored this.
Either way fake rack or not it would sure look good mounted.
Juest my 2 cents worth, Canon500mm.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-05 AT 12:18PM (MST)[p]I have a bigger photo if anyone wants it..Jury still out

if it is real can you enhance a buck that far by the way you hold and photo it?

skull plate does look enormous?? oh and btw the date on the phot is 92'..were they doing lots of fakes then..I don't know.

I know very little about repro bucks, but everyone I have seen has had smooth bases. Not the little knobby bumpy bases this "buck" has. Looks real IMHO. But the guy doesn't look to grande' either.

OK, you last three have convinced me that the queen of england is holding the rack, but what is it? Real?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-05 AT 07:44PM (MST)[p]Maybe some ol' timer shot it back in the day and threw it in his horn collection, meat got eaten and he never got around to it because all the envioro's took his job and he couldn't afford it. Then 30 years later his grankids while brewing a batch of meth in papa's garage find this rack and pose like they have a life. Red eyed and toothless they search for hunting fame.
You never know, Canon500mm.

Does anyone know if Ryan killed a monster this year? I thought I heard he had the Pauns tag, or was that last year already?

Since some of you know the story behind the buck and the hunter... will you give some info.
I'd like to know out of curiosity... don't leave it to speculation.

It's a shame that nobody answered the post. I am curious myself about the questions posed in this string.

The man in the Picture is Ryan Hatch, the Producer of the Muley Crazy movies and Magazine. This picture is quit old, has to be at least ten years or more. Ryan helped kill the governers tag buck on the strip this year, but to my knowledge never killed another deer, well at least of any considerable size. He doesn't spend as much time scouting and guiding as he used to he is really busy wiht his magazine. I don't give you this information to make you think I associate with him, I just run into him every now and then in S. Utah or on the Strip. What ever you do just call him and ask him he will tell you about the Pic.
