Anybody have experience using a decoy and calling in elk? Some reviews look pretty good, just want to hear some personal experiences and what not to do.

Last year, we called in 3 bulls from several hundred yards away using the cow decoy. As soon as they got their eyes on it, they came running!

I think it would work good expecially going throught the drak timber where they would only get quick glimpses of it. Use that along with some soft cow calls could be really good.

Anyone else have experience doing this.

I used there decoy last year.I think it worked pritty good. You need to keep it in the shade because it seems to shine a little bit.I actualy stood behind it and moved it a little. I will be using it this year to.

Every time we have used it have been nearly run over by satellite bulls, no experience with herd bulls, New black bolly cow is looking tempting for spot and stalk on lopes and open range critters.

Had excellent results with the Montana cow decoy, made the mistake of buying the cheaper Rizzo cardboard decoys first , what junk, loose parts/noise while walking and shiny, even in a bag it was impossible to carry the Rizzo thru thick brush without making noise.

I have a cow rump but never got to call a bull in. I also have an antelope decoy and last year in late july in NV I got me a nice goat with it. My son held it out in front of us like a shield and we were able to walk right up on a nice buck as he just stared at us.

I bought one 2 seasons ago. I have had some good experiences with it. Just make sure you stake it down good or the wind will blow it over. Had a Nice 6x6 at 70 yards coming in and the stupid thing blew over. To make a long story short he ran off. I never leave the truck without it.

They work awesome, a couple of years ago though I had a muzzle loader hunter try to shoot mine, I was in a tree stand over a water hole and he never seen me in the tree, and I didnt see him, it scared the SHET outta me when he touched off the smoke pole, Im glad he missed but it was exciting to say the least. But after that experience I dont think I would ever hide behind one, but they are alot more popular now so people might not be as likely to shoot one. I actually have the Elk II and III I havent been able to set them both up at the same time but am looking forward to trying that this season.
I didnt get the chance to use my buddys antelope decoy last year on my muzz hunt but this year archery season Im sure it will be set up alot.

It is the single best investment you will ever make for hunting elk. Like some of the posts have said already, I have seen bulls come from a mile away once they saw the decoy. It also helps with the bulls that get "hung up" during the bow hunt and you want to close that last 50 yards for a bow shot. The best $90 you will ever spend.

It's always an adventure!!!

I am mostly a lurker on here but hey I did a search on decoys and the Heads Up Decoy came up and it looks like a pretty good pack decoy. www.headsupdecoy.com/Products.html

They are not quite as expensive as the Montana decoys and look darn realistic on the website. Couple of nice bucks on the site too.

Has anyone tried a Headsup Decoy?

I think I am going to order a Mule Deer decoy. The elk and antelope look good also.

Califelkslayer what site did you see the cow decoy for sale on? I thought I was on their website and saw the cow only talked about as a protype but couldn't find it on their price list?

I've used one several times but only had a bull lay eyes on it once. When he did he was about 25 yards fromt he shooter and he stood there for a long time staring at it. Wasn't the one we were looking for so the shooter passed but could've taken taken a really good shot.

They have their time and place but I strongly recommend them as part of the aresenal.

Good luck!

I'm with AVSman- i've used pack decoys to good effect, but cow hunts and bull hunts overlap a bunch here in NM, and that aside, I've heard lots of stories of near tradgedies hiding behind these decoys or moving with them. Maybe it's the hunter-ed instructor in me running rampant, but be damn careful!

They work well, but I would only use them on an archery hunt. I've called in a couple bulls into it including one around 350". He just stood there staring at it from about 30 yards away.

So from a setup stand point, it's best to get it setup behind you, so that you can position yourself between it and the incoming bull.

The visual adds a lot to the effectiveness of your calling.

CAUTION: pack it well, as it does have a tendency to want to open up on you, and if it does accidentally, not only might it spook your prey, but it's sure to scare the crap out of you too!!

I shot my bull this year using two of them and calling. I have called in lots of bulls using them. We had a huge heard bull come racing in and I had no chance to set it up in a real good spot. The ground was rocky and the wind was blowing. At about 50 yards the wind started to blow it over and he got nervous. They aren't perfect but an awesome tool. I personally like the rump one. I hunt all day with it set up. I just tuck it under my armpit all set up as I'm walking. One thing to remember is to get it set up in a spot you want before you call. The big bull we had come in was a case in which we got excited and called before finding a good spot to set it up. He showed up and I was forced to try it get it set up in the rocks. Good Luck.

NWElkHunter, My only experence is seeing them in Cabela's catalog. But ask me next year. Where do you find the cow (Moo-cow) decoy for antelope???
