Thats what I thought but beleive it or not a guide told me unit 10 was open on that tag and only a handfull were not. Ok now whre would you go?

Where to go?????? The eternal question.

Ask a general question, and you will get a general answer, such as: "pretty much every area has good elk populations."

You first need to do your homework. Take a look at the "open" units. then go to the statistics area at the colorado DOW. http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/Statistics/ Look at hunter numbers and success rates. When you see some areas that have not too many hunters and decent success, call the local DOW office and ask some quesions. Those questions depend on how you plan to hunt. Do you want to ride around in a jeep or 4 wheeler and hope to get lucky? Do you want a tresspass hunt? Do you want to hike in a mile or two? 5 or 6? do you have horses? Are you going solo or with someone? Are you willing to go down into "hell holes" and carry hundreds of pounds of meat out on your back from these holes if you get lucky? Next time you drive by a cow, imagine you just shot it 1 mile, 2 miles, 5 miles from the nearest road, it is warm, and you have to trasport it to your vehicle and get it to a cooler before it spoils. How are you going to do it?

How you plan on hunt will narrow it down some. If you plan on hiking by foot and know how far you and go in and still carry an elk out, tell the DOW personnel what you can do and see if they will suggest some areas, then do some research on those area using maps, and you will then have more specific questions to call back and ask, at that point, you can probably ask here and get some answers.

In other words, if you ask the question: "I am researching grizzly creek in unit xyz, and I notice there are no roads close to the head of the creek. Is this accurate? is this a good place to look for elk?

questions like that will get some respones, unlike,"where is a good place to hunt in Colorado"

good luck
