What is the best way to scout a new unit for elk?

Spotting from a high place, and then burn boot leather.

Look at maps and find places that dont have any roads or trails for at least a mile in all directions... and then go check it out on foot.

For me Google Earth and quad maps are about the best you can find till you actually get your feet on the ground out in the hills.

Yup, I agree...glass, glass, glass and get out and put some hard miles on hopefully some broken in boots! Google Earth is awesome for getting to know an area before actually setting foot in it.
