Anyone willing to share any info on a good starting point for cow elk in GMU 4 in Colorado?

go to Freeman campground north of craig. take the trails at the end of the camp.hunt the aspens.lots of cows

REM, what season you going to be there? My father and I will be hunting cow elk in this unit during the 4th season. Our first time in this unit so I don't have any first-hand info to offer.

You are hunted the same season as me. I have the early cow tag and a 2nd season buck tag. We hunted there last year and I took my cow 15 minutes into the season and my buddy took his 15 minutes later about 400 yards away from me. Alot of elk but ALOT of hunters. What kind of hunting are you looking for...i.e. horseback, ATV, hiking??? let me know I can give you some info.

No horse or ATV,I will be alone on foot .Plan on hiking in from camp.Looking at the Black Mountain area.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-08 AT 03:00AM (MST)[p]We scouted up near Black Mountin last year for 1st rifle season durning the archery and muzzleloader season. Though we did not see any elk we saw alot of deer. But there was also alot of hunters camps up that way. We instead choose to hunt the Bears Ears side. Strictly horseback or your own two feet. There was also alot of hunters there but I think no matter where you go up there you are going to see alot of orange. We are headeed back there this year for 1st season elk and I have a 2nd season buck tag...gonna be along week but fun....hopefully. I can give you some more info if you would like to PM me.
