Europeen Mounts

I finally found something to get my skulls bright white. Here are the last two europeen mounts I did. The white tail I killed in Idaho and the small mule deer was my sons first deer.

I don't know what hornaddiction uses, but many years ago Outdoorlife had a recipe I have used with excellent results. First you need 40 percent peroxide. This is only available at beauty supply stores. Get some whitener while you are there. It is actually powdered bleach. Mix it up to the consistency of whipped cream. Coat the entire skull (keep it off the antlers), and put it in a clear plastic bag. Seal the bag as best you can. IMPORTANT- set the skull on a bright white surface in the sun for a couple of days. The skulls I have done come out snow white. A thorough cleaning job will also help. The car wash works pretty good. mtmuley

The 40% peroxide is still kind of a goo isn't it? I tried that, but not with the powdered bleach. What's the purpose of the plastic bag, keep it moist?

RE: European Mounts

Mt Muley that is exactly what I did. But I only coated them for about 6 hours apiece, and they turned out bright white.

The 40% peroxide is not like a goo. It is the consistency of water. The bag is to trap moisture. mtmuley

RE: European Mounts

You can get 40 volume peroxide in a creamy consistency. When mixed with Clairol Basic White 2, it seems to stay moist longer than the regular 40 vol. The bag is to keep it moist as long as possible. When the mixture dries, its bleaching qualities stop. I sometimes give it a spritz with a spray bottle of water at the first sign of it drying. This stuff is great! I have been using it for over 10 years/hundreds of skulls and havent found anything that comes close to getting skulls this white! Never use chlorine based bleach!!!!

Whats the best way to get the flesh off. I tried boiling once and lets just say that it didnt work out as well as I wanted. The meat became like cement onto the skull and the garage stank for a while.

RE: European Mounts

The best way I have found to get the meat off while boiling is called sal soda. You can order it from any taxidermy company. Van Dykes is where I get mine. It is a cabella's owned company.
You still have to scrape and pull meat off but it helps break it up. Your garage will stink that is unavoidable. You also have to watch your boiling time. My sons deer was young and the bone did not hold up like the older deer did.

1/4 cup non-iodized salt & 1/4 cup sal-soda per gallon of water. Add a touch of dish soap. Clean as much mea off as possible and boil at low roll for no more than 30 minutes. If you keep boiling not only will it cook the meat onto the skull, but will allow grease to soak into it as well. For a little extra cleaning I soak it in warm water with some anti-bacterial dish soap for a day to make sure that it is good and clean.
