Idaho general help

My buddies and I are finally fed up with Utah's archery elk seasons and all so we are going to try somewhere out of state for next season. I have some questions regarding what areas are over the counter and draw only, and what kind of hunting pressure these areas get. So, if any of you Idaho hunters would be willing to help us out PM me and I will get more specific on the questions.

Thanks,

So a whole pack of utah hunters wants to hunt Idaho, in a pack. What they need is a place to hunt. Look into the Selway I hear they have great hunting. Ron

Now Ron, that's just not neighborly. The guy is only looking for a free sweet spot, for him and his buddies!

Try Unit 66A. Great OTC archery tag and lots of big bulls. Just park over there with the other 3000 non-residents. :)

Wow, there's a lot of sarcasm on here.

I'll try to give you as best an answer as I can. I know from experience that although some people will help you out, few will give any meaningful advice on location...righfully so. It took some of these guys years to find an "area".

I can tell you that there are still numerous tags left for several areas. I assume you will be hunting bulls? If so, go on the Idaho fish and game site....look at harvest statistics, hunting pressure and terrain and narrow your search down to a few areas.

Then come back and ask more specific questions on a certain areas. You'll probably get more help.

Personally, I hunt the Sawtooths in central Idaho. The success rates are low 9-11%, but there are few hunters in the areas I go. We pack only about 2-3 miles from the trailhead and have the whole area to ourselves. I always say, I would rather see 30 elk in a week and no hunters versue 200 elk and 30 hunters.

Most of the units in Idaho have a General any elk archery season, and a general rifle spike season...most.
There are also Rifle, and Muzzleloader hunts for big bulls for most units, these are typically a draw.
Read the regulations, and research the Idaho FG site.

Good luck

Sorry for the sarcasm; it was late, and I was cranky. I've been taking non-resident friends elk hunting for 20 years within 40 miles of Idaho Falls, and we are still 100%. The biggest key - be willing to work hard! Go DOWN into the holes, and find elk where no one wants to go. The idea of packing UP really sucks, but you'd be surprised the number of hunters who do it backwards, and aren't successful. Any of the OTC elk units have huntable numbers, but archery is unrestricted and gets crowded.

My sympathies for trying to find good, realistic hunting in Utah. I'm still trying to get used to the place my first year coming from Idaho. The nice thing about Idaho is that there is actually public land and good success if you get off the road and away from people, as long as area is conducive the the animals you are hunting. Bowhunt is right, the IDFG website is great for statistics. Much better than the UDWR site.

Idahoron, first thanks for the humor! While I can certainly see your displeasure for the non-residents, I felt the same way, I'm just trying to find some kind of reasonable chance to hunt elk with a bow. If you were to ever come to Utah you would see that you have to have deep pockets or relatives with good property to have a good hunt here.
Our party consists of 3 but most likely just 2 hunters. Do you have room in your party for us???

I guess Idaho is doing somethin right with the whole manage for oppurtunity program...Good deal, I feel blessed to have the oppurtunity to hunt like i do in Idaho, now maybe if they tack up the non res price a little like say N.M. then they could really get some stuff done...lol J/K I grew up in the south which is like some places out west, leases or knowing somebody, which is why I joined the Idaho Guard so I can hunt more and not pay 4-5 grand for a place to hunt!!
