I used to be a big Darner fan.
Bought his book, thought he was the greatest.
I have never taken pleasure out of berating anyone, but after having recentley spoken to some extreme authorities on monster muleys, I can no longer consider myself a fan or a believer.
I'll leave it at that.

I will look at it because I believe such a awesome animal should be honored for itself. Forget about the guy that shot it if you have to but at least give the deer the respect that it deserves!!!

Here is the deal with Darner..

My best friend was actually the one who researched and wrote his book “How to find Giant Bucks.” After a lengthy conversation with my friend, there is no doubt Kirt was a great hunter, but he was also a great deceiver, and Poacher.

Remember you can $hit the tourist but there is no $hitting $kunk $hit

That buck looks like the buck ol Bessy saw on the winter range last week. "The big bodied deer" that had already dropped his head gear. I know that the buck he saw had giant holes in its head!

One of 2 bobcats in dire pursuit of giant headgear in Altamont!!!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-12-05 AT 11:29 AM (MST)

Kirt Darner did slam some huge bucks. I along with many were guilty of idolizing him as we grew up. That stopped when I found out what he is. I won't bash him and call him a poacher, because no one can know for certain. He lived in my home town for years. I watched big bucks disappear and mysteriously some very similar deer would end up in his collection. He did get in trouble for taking his hunters into a trophy unit without tags. His exwife did turn him in for illegally entering heads into the books. Heads he had puchased and entered under his own name. Poacher or not he will never hold an ounce of respect from me. He basically Pis$ed on every ethical sportsman in the world by doing what he's done, and for what his own ego and name.

It's all bull chit, well most of it, yes he did get popped for letting a client shoot at a robo elk the fish cops were watching, (I read the story for myself)...but he grew up when big bucks were plentiful, I doubt he had to poach them!...

Kirt had his bucks removed from the books because he tried to list the new world record rack that a dieing friend gave him, as his own kill (Kirt's)..... Deceptive absolutely.....poacher don't think so...jealousy kills reputation's and so does ego, and if your guilty for one offence then your guilty for all 'eh boy's......Kirt was guilty of having a big ego......

21. "RE: anybody recognize this deer"

this has been beat up a bunch, but so far, nobody has said much that is true. Manny is right, Kirt made the b&c remove his heads, but it was years before his pal, Lee (see "Lee's Meat Buck" in the trophy hunter magazine) died and left him the rack that is probably the real world record typical. he's sorta playing with b&c with that rack for now. his ex-wife didn't turn him in for anything. the only time he's ever been cited is on the robo-elk deal. the rumor and out and out lies that guys on this site can state as fact crack me up. read fellers. the truth is out there. no matter what kinda opinion you have of Kirt, he's a hell of a hunter. has no ego problems. just likes to hunt. nearly all his problems can be tracked back to other folk's jealousy. not his "poaching". awhile back some guy that said he knew all there was to know about Kirt and his alledged illegal activity said he even got in trouble for trying to enter a jaguar skull as a mt. lion. that one has gotta be pure bs because the fed's woulda jumped all over that with the lacy act, seein' as how jag's are endangered. this is almost funny.

I bought Kirt's book "How To Find Giant Mule Deer" when it first came out. I think the guy wrote a really good book. I've read it many times.

One thing I thought was odd at the time and REALLY think is odd now, is that he did not include any pictures of the big bucks right after he killed them. You know, the ones with the blood and the tongues hanging out. With one or two exceptions, the only field photos are of smaller bucks, or elk, or sheep. Plenty of photos with the mounted heads though.

I'm not accusing him of anything. Just making an observation. Check it out for yourself.

Harry, i know the truth as far as i could figure it. i know the guy that is listed as the owner of the buck in question in the record books and i know Kirt. i'm convinced that they are not the same buck. Kirt has photos of it in the back of a 70's model ford pickup with the antlers still attached to the skull and the skull still attached to the neck and front quarters. there was also a carbon 14 test done by some guy at the university of Arizona who is supposed to be the best c-14 guy in the world and he said the buck came from the time that Kirt said he killed it and not the 40's. Kirt's buck is wider and has more points, according to the score sheets for the 2 bucks. but the deal that cinched it for me was when Duard Sanford, who is listed as the owner of the buck in question, told me, not someone else who told me, that that buck in question had been dropped and skull plate was broken and repaired with fiberglass. Kirt's buck has not been repaired. Duard was also firmly convinced that his buck is the one Kirt has. if you went to court with that kinda evidence, who would win? plus the whole mess was started by a guy who was later convicted of some of the sickest crap with little kids that you ever heard off. including taking nude photos in the morgue, of a little girl who was raped and murdered in a cotton field. i spent a lot of time trying to get an opinion. i think Kirt was wrongly persecuted.

I was told that the Carbon dating thing wasn't given too much credence, because of it's short term accuracy.
in other words it works to determine fossils, where the time frame is hundreds or thousands of years old, but really isn't accurate in short term identification.
I don't know for sure.
Kirt Darner is a real good hunter, and I've heard he is a real freindly guy.
I've just heard some pretty strong evidence, from extremeley reliable sources, that he isn't legit.
It would be a travesty if he was wrongly accused.
And the fires rage on...

i've heard the same thing about c-14. all i know is that the guy that is the best in the world at c-14 said Kirt was right as far as when he said he shot the deer and that guy knows more than i do about it and i'll take his findings as being true. i read every word of the report multiple times and he never said there was any chance he was wrong or that there was an error factor of more than a couple years, not 30. since world war II and all the nuclear testing, there is a some real good data radioactive particles in the air and per what this guy said, it's real easy to make a good determination on antlers because of that. stuff pre-40's can't be determined well at all. and the fact that Duard told me he repaired the rack with fiberglass pretty much made up my find. Kirt's rack ain't broke. some folks just like to start, repeat and add to rumors, i guess.

RLH,

As far as I'm concerned, I say thanks for taking the time to tell everyone about your first hand knowledge of all this, I like it when things are set in order, but it's a shame when some one with Kirt's accomplishments get's bashed by jealous, I REPEAT! Jealous people that have nothing better to do except make claims of things they nothing about...

I still say Kirt is legend in his own time!!!.. I bought his book years ago (80's) and have put into practice some of his techniques in hunting mule deer, I started hunting mule deer because of Kirts stories that started showing up in the magazine back in 1981... I’ve been hooked ever since after seeing the buck he had taken back then, he’s still taking monster bucks like the one from old Mexico….

I did accuse him of letting his ego get the best of him concerning the rumor I heard, apparently turned out to be wrong!…..I stand corrected….I hope Kirt keeps doing what he does best…….
