There all good pics but I like the front view by the truck, really tell the width and hieght. Im investing heavily in the raffle this year. If I draw ill be calling on ya :)

The funny thing is that for the last few years, a guy could have bought the auction tag for less than it would have cost to go do a Mexico hunt! By the time you add in tags, travel, meals, etc..., probably even about the same as a mid- to high-scale guided mule deer hunt here in the states!

It isn't a slam dunk deal though. I put in right around a month worth of time and thought I was going to end up eating the tag. And I passed up 164 deer before shooting that one.

Very nice! Congratulations, and thanks for posting.

Is that him walking away in the first picture?

After I shot him and got over there we pushed a half dozen does up over the ridge that had been bedded below him. A couple hours later, after dragging him back down/across the canyon, the does had filtered back over and were standing right around where I shot him earlier. Seems a little odd with all the blood and guts laying up there, but maybe they were upwind of them?

Sam:

They may come a tad bigger somewhere in our great state, but they surely don't come any more beautiful. That puppy is one sweeeeeeeet buck! Nice job!!!!!

Those pictures really show what a nice buck that is. Im glad to see someone did the raffel justice.Any tips on where to take my 13 year old nephew during the general modern deer season, I have been archery elk hunting the last 17 years and I am kinda out of the loop on local deer. I need to show him some deer to keep his intrest up and maby get a crack at a legal buck as well. Thanks and nice job!

Glad you got a dandy up in WA~! Sounds like it was a fantastic hunt. You perservered and deserved nothing less~!

Congrats~!

Sometimes the only difference between being a hero and a zero is just one more ridge! It just as easily could have swung the other way and I'd get to stare at my unnotched tag on the wall for the rest of my life.

My buddy always says luck is nothing more than opportunity and preparedness coming together. Whatever, I'm just glad I had some!

As for taking your nephew deer hunting, I'm not sure where you're at or what you were thinking. Quite frankly, ID has the best thing going for kids. If you buy a deer tag they can buy a Youth Mentor Tag for around $10 and a license at less than $10 makes an ID hunt cheaper than a resident deer hunt in WA. And they can shoot any deer in a bunch of units making it a fun experience for a young or new hunter. Don't know his age, but they also have some youth antlerless hunts in eastern WA that would be easy, nice weather and offer a good chance at success.

Again, sweet buck man! Please show us some pictures when you get your mount back. Congrats again.

awesome pictures. the one in front of the truck really does the buck justice. Im guessing that he was taken somewhere in Mud or Potatoe Creek in the entiat unit?

Sam,

Got your letter, thanks man. Your pictures should be there today or the next. I will be talking to you soon.

Great buck, great story and great pictures. Glad the fog and low clouds didn't trip you up. Thanks for letting us know how it all turned out.

Steve

Those are great pics! He is one beautiful buck. There are some bigger ones, but dang, not many, especially in WA. Will you get him officially net "dry" scored or not?

Curious, did you spend much time hiking or did you mostly glass from roads? Not knocking you either way, you had great results, just curious if you got out and away from the roads at all? I love to backpack hunt, that why I'm asking.

Congrats yet again.

Oh yeah, how much do you think the Auction tag will go for this year? What did it end up going for last year?

Ernie

Probably won't bother getting him officially scored. Hiking didn't do me much good in that country, you could glass clear across most canyons to the next road system. And you could glass the burns more efficiently from the ridge tops than trying to hike through them.

Not that I'm against hiking, although then you're apt to jump a buck and have to make a split second decision without really being able to check him out. Easier to check a deer out that's bedded across the canyon than running down the draw. I was trying to cover more country too. Although if I new right where a big one always hung out I'd have done the hiking thing just the same.

Not sure what the auction tag went for in 2004 and don't know what if will go for this year, but based on the three previous years it would appear that most people think WA sucks when it comes to big bucks. Especially if you compare our auction tags to UT and NV at the $60,000-$80,000 people pay for the same tag in those states. But at under $10,000, WA is the cheapest state to play that game in? Even at that it's still out of my league, but not some of these guys with a little more play money!

I'll just stick with the raffle tag!

The auction tag for 2004 sold for $12,00 and the hunter did not take a buck. The tag sold for $8500 in 2003, $9600 in 2002, and $8000 in 2001. Only in the last couple years has the tag split into two (one for the eastside and one for the west side) In addition, the season dates the last couple years have been Sept. 1 to Dec. 31.

It will be sold at the same "Seattle Sportsmen's Convention" on Feb 4-5 in Bellevue. See www.wafnaws.com website for banquet information.
