hay everyone im a us marine currently in iraq, im comming home to idaho falls in september plannining on staying the whole month to go chase elk with my bow, but i have a problem, that is i havent hunted back home for 2 years and dont know how the elk have been latly, or even where to go any more, id like some where somewhat close to home, and where the animals arent too call shy, but a drive wouldnt bother me either so if anybody has anything for me id more than appreciate the help thanks.

Where'd you hunt before when you were here? Elk numbers are still really good. Palisades zone/64-67 has some good ones, if you will walk. Tex Creek zone has more than ever, but they get bugle shy (cow/calf mews still work). The steep and nasty stuff along the lake still has good numbers. Stricter enforcment of ATV's has just made it better.

Good luck. Thanks for all you do over there.

hay thanks for the tips, i use to hunt the tex creek area and up in 30 and 30a and did ok up there.

Until we get some way of limiting the NR numbers in archery areas, the hunting will just get tougher and tougher in places like Beverhead, Lemhi, or Diamond Creek. Most out-of-staters could care less for the cow option of the "A" tag, and just come for the majority of the rut period, then leave.

I have met some nice ones in the hills, but some- - - -!

i know what u mean iv had the same experances last time i hunted the beverhead i ended up takeing a cow with my rifle off the fields on the depridation hunt she was ggod eatin, but the nr just think they have to have the horns.

you guys are funny. Could you paint non-residents with a broader brush please? :)

Just remember, you are a non-resident in every state but one ;-)

not me i being active duty millitary get to claim resedancy in the state im stationed in as well as my state of residance so i get to hunt those long skinny leged dogs with antlers in north carolina they call white tails hahahaha j/k

Tell me I just misread that you are claiming residency in 2 different states?

I was a career marine and I was only allowed to claim 1 state as a resident...

It better be hahahahahaha j/k.

come on now nochalk...ya know once a marine always a marine...you was or you were a marine in a previous life...what i think he means is he can hunt in the states... I was able to hunt colorado as a non resident but i had to have a copy of orders or otherwise stating why i was in that state while on active duty..I have read up on this...basicly while military your residency state is where you file taxes from...and yes i know in iraq you dont pay taxes but u have a home of record. And while you can get away with getting more then one state license i would not want to be the one getting caught... i could be wrong but i would have to see it written and then i would be a little pissed at not hunting colorado and idaho this last year........

another thing, i hunted elk in 59 last year...opening morning deer i seen a herd went where they were on opening day elk...seen a cow with 2 calfs...i know this area, have hunted there for years, know alot of the ranchers up there and wolves have taken a toll...this year i am debating on tex creek or desert hunt again, i cant eat antlers they would be nice but its nice to kill something too....let me know if u get the tex creek i am leaning towards that hunt....as always semper fi.....or if ya wanna talk ever i was in oif 1, and oif 4 i know what its like....who are you with, i still have alot of friends in the corps....

As a military member your state of residency is where you claim to file your taxes. However, you may also hunt and fish as a resident of the state you are stationed in. Now here is the deal you can not hold more than 1 resident state license. So if you choose to hunt in the state you are stationed in and posses a resident license you have to hunt as a non-resident in your state of record. I know some hunters that did this and were just givin a warning. But I know others that got away with it. In ID you can get a Furlough License for the time you are on leave. I am not sure if this would be the same as a resident license. My brother would call ID F&G and have them hold me a furlough license so I could apply for controlled elk hunts. It used to be free, it looks like now you get it for half price.

if he bought a lifetime idaho license he can hunt idaho as a resident and claim residency in another state, i just read it in the proclamation today...seems to me that is the way i would go... Also u can get a furlough, but i might be wrong but i think when i got it you had to be active duty, or be called up if your a reservist...

Dang I wish I had known that I would have gotten the lifetime while I was still on active duty. It would have paid for itself with one elk hunt. Pretty sure i can't do it now that I have retired.

usmcelkhunter you may want to consider buying one. You never no what could happen.

Furlough is for active duty.

hay thanks guys ill have to do that when i get home in september that would be a lot cheaper way to go.

Pg 87 of proclamations, you can look online, you can buy lifetime liscense and enjoy resident status in draws and getting guaranteed tags that aren't part of quota, however if you are trying to claim residency in two states at same time, you will pay non resident tag fee's on your tags. You are a nonresident lifetime liscense holder. I tried this angle while going to college in a nearby state.

Get your hunt on!!

usmcelkhunter,

First off I want to thank you for your service in Iraq in my behalf as an American! I sure hope no one takes for granted all the work you guys do for us over there. I know I don't.

I sure wish I knew a good guide out of Idaho Falls. If I did I would call them up and ask them to throw in some pro-bono work in your behalf. I would love to see a good guide step up and take you out for a quality hunt while you are on leave.

There are plenty quality Elk guys up in SE Idaho maybe someone up there can drop a good word out for usmcelkhunter. Let's see if we can help a good brother out.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-27-08 AT 02:01PM (MST)[p]wapit, not taking anything away from him, and i have talked to him, but what about doing something for people who have served...get some kind of thing going about people who have served in iraq, not just ones that are in military now...i missed out on hunting deer in 45 cause i was in iraq...if i woulda listened to my brother, if i would have put in with my dad i would be guaranteed that tag the next year...There are a whole lot of us that dont come back the same person as we left...although some is for the better it forever changes you.. not just for myself but for others that are worse off then i am...i would like to see something done for my brothers and sisters that have served...
