I was wondering if someone could lean me in the right direction for a good quality Archery Elk Hunt in Idaho.

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

well most of the arcery elk hunts are over the counter just get off your but and scout and you will find some good elk hunting..........

pick anywhere in the southeast corner of the state. stump creek, texcreek, soda springs east to the wyo border.

>units 66a and 76 and 66
>and 69

Ok Garth Carter, you keep thinkin that. 66a has got to be the most over rated elk hunt in the world. Hunted it over the counter archery for 7 years in a row and drew the rifle last year. It used to be great, but now it is VERY hard to even find a bull over 300

What about wilderness areas with horses? Any suggestions, I'm thinking of doing it next year. I don't need any hot spots, I can scout and hike. I just need some direction as towards where in the state for a nice Archery or ML wilderness hunt.

KACHTA, no offense but if you had a hard time finding a bull over 300 in unit 66a or 76 then you need to get a new hobby, or at least get away from the roads or off your ATV. I have friends who hunt these units every year and take QUALITY bulls, well over 300, with a bow. granted they pack in more than a few miles. Let me know if you need a push in the right direction, Kind of funny that after bowhunting these units for 7 years and feeling that it would be VERY hard to even find a bull over 300 that you would even put in for the tag.....I gave this advise to help the poster in his quest to have a good hunt soley on my knowledge of the area and to give him a place to start researching...not because Garth Carter told me to...I would hope after 7 years he will be able to learn it as well as you have.

good responce treedagain, you would think after 7 years he would know his way around, true there is alot of people who take advantage of the bow hunt in these areas, BUT good bulls are still around.....you just have to find them.....and they are not going to be close to the road....Kachta, why would you stick around if the hunting was that bad for you? let alone put in for a controlled permit in an area that would be VERY hard to find A bull over 300......makes you wonder....

LAST EDITED ON Jul-20-08 AT 07:16PM (MST)[p]In my 7 years hunting the unit i shoot 6 bulls in between 315 and 340, my last one being on the rifle hunt last year where i killed the biggest elk i saw that was in the 340's. I'm just saying, 6 years ago the unit was great, lately not so much. 66a has people running all over it lately on the archery hunt, its a joke. Yes i'm speaking that the average hunter will have a very difficult time finding and getting within range of a 300" bull on this unit on the archery hunt, i'm not trying to brag but i consider myself a good hunter, and have 6 good GENERAL idaho elk mounted in the basement, 2 B&C Deer(1 shoot with bow) to prove it (all elk off 66a, and all these animals while i'm just barely over 22 years of age) and trust me all are well of the beating path, mostly shoot on Baldy and a couple on the front side of caribou just west of North West of TIN Cup. I'm just saying if you consider this one of the best units in the state (in 2008), idaho must really blow. 6 years ago, it was amazing, not so much the last couple years, you ask anyone of your buddies how the last couple years have been, you will get the same response that i gave. Sorry buddy, and yes, we are moving units this year, thats 3 less utards in your guy's hair so be happy! You can keep thinking i'm a crappy hunter and drive the roads all day, but i'm just saying it how i see it.

And elkdreamer, i put in for the unit because i had a very sought after colorado deer tag last year and knew i would have to spend all my time scouting for it, i put in for 66a because i knew the area first of all, and i did not expect to draw at all, i was stunned when i saw the results

sounds like something Kurt Darner would write to me....only 22 years of age and already rewriting the record books...from the sounds of it the elk herd should be sending you a gift basket...if you know the area so well and have taken 6 bulls between 315 and 340 in as many years, why move....sounds fishy to me...my friends have NEVER seen a single person hunting in there area, and yes the elk are still thick as ticks where they go.

Thats good to hear, i'm glad the population is still doing good in some of the areas! Never seen a single person? thats pretty impressive..

WOW! 6 bulls over 315 in 7 years. That really does sound like a pretty crappy unit to hunt. I like how your first post makes it sound like the worst unit in Idaho then you get called out and the story changes to what I would consider a pretty phenomenal area to hunt elk for the person who wants to get off the roads. I don't know what you would consider a great unit but 6 315+ bulls out of 7 years with a bow sounds like a unit I wouldn't mind drawing every year.

I'll have to defend Kachta here. There's still a lot of good bulls in the OTC units of SE Idaho. We manage to get a nice 6 or 7 point each year for friends from out of state on the general rifle season. Haven't been lucky enough to get them to draw the 66A tag. They do require hard work, tho.

Last year it was 315" 6x7. The year before it was a 373" gross, 356" net 7x7. Just don't squeeze on the little ones.

Blank, how do you think Mr.Kachta can go from this quote to having shot 6 bulls from 315 to 340...like I said sounds pretty fishy to me......either he was just trying to push hunters away from his area or has little or no experiance in these units. there are QUALITY elk in these units. you hit the nail on the head when you said that they require a little hard work...enough said Kachta, like i said if you want me to point you in the right direction i will give you some good leads on where to start looking for your next bull between 315 and 340

This one will work for most people1

I'm saying its going down hill because last year i got extremely lucky to kill the bull i did, the year before that was the hardest hunt of my life and did not shoot a bull, and the year before that it was miserable compared to years past but i managed to put an arrow in a decent 6 far from the roads, clear down off the front side. Its goin down hill fast, i just don't think it should still be considered one of the top units in the state, or are they all goin down hill like that?

I could prob do that! all my pictures are from disposable camera's, if i use a scanner can i get them on my computer. You guys can question and doubt my honesty all you want, but the guy asked for a quality archery elk hunt, i am just giving him a heads up that the unit is hard lately, and trying to help him out

I always like to hear someone talking about all the game they kill year after year in the same spot then exclaim "wow, the unit sure isn't what it used to be". Any correlation?

Makes me think that the hunters should be limited?

Nice pic Blank. Aren't you Paul K.'s buddy from IF? If so, Paul used to be my agent when I lived up there.

Yep, that's us. He's been my agent since the early 80's. We manage to hunt a lot together, and will be going after my Cape Buffalo and tuskless elephant next year. He will be after buff and PG.

Lower Zambezi Valley with Chifuti Safaris. The ones you see on "TRACKS ACROSS AFRICA", on the Outdoor Channel. I booked with Ivan Carter, and hope to see a lot of elephant first, and then my buff.

Paul has been to RSA twice, and Namibia twice for me. Got a monster leopard last year.
