From the number of responses it does not seem that Northwestern Colorado is a very popular mule deer hunting destination. Maybe someone could direct me to a hunter that does have some experience in that region of Colorado.

The NW area is a very hard draw with out points I think its a no chance!(concidered a trophy area)
Need ten points to draw for sure! Wyoming to the north area 102
is what I hunt and see the bucks go back and fourth from WY to CO to UT and back into WY after the shooting starts, opening weekends work them good,WY 1st then CO then UT!WY area 102 is hard to draw also but I do the special draw and hit it 4 outta 6 times and made it a combo hunt by hitting the antalope too! ELK
is the hardest thing in the western states to draw there maybe 1 in a thousand odds, a Bull tag their is the most sought after in Wyoming!
good luck

This past year I hunted in NorthWest Colorado, Unit 10 with a muzzle loader. It was a fantastic hunt, it did take years to draw though. There were a fair amount of deer and quite a few bucks. I took a very nice 5 x 5 that as 33 inches wide!

I was told that I would not have a problem drawing a tag for mule deer in Unit 25 without any points. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. I am from Texas and we do things a little different down here. Specifically, there is almost zero public land hunting and we don't have to worry about collecting preference points or lotteries.
What I am interested in is the flattop wilderness area north of sweetwater lake. Again, this is all dependent or my ability to draw a tag for unit 25. My brother and I are going to pack in with horses. From what I have learned about the area, there are a couple of outfitters that hunt the area and I might have a hard time getting away from all the people. Again, I don't know if any of this is true. What we really are looking for is an area that we can pack into with horses, that doesn't allow trucks or ATV's. We plan on hunting the entire season and the hard the hunt the better. We understand that most of the larger deer are going to be a long way from the roads.
If you have any suggestions on areas that we will be able to get into without points and what season would be the best for rifle hunting. Also, I would like to start accumulating poitns in a very good area for elk and mule deer. What two areas are considered the best in the State for elk and mule deer and what season should I be applying for if I want to rifle hunt.

Hey bowhuntinnut.

So you live in Meeker. That is my favorite hunting area. I lived in Rifle for 6 years and loved it. Would move back in a minute if employment allowed. Winters here in Missoula, MT are gloomy compared to the glorious blue skys of Colorado.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi to someone from where I'd like to be.

Hey Mark
Yep i was born and raised in Meeker and i would have to say it is my favorite place to be, but Montana can't be that bad either. I'm lookin to go hunting up there for the first time this year if i can draw a tag.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-05 AT 04:57PM (MST)[p]No, Montana is not all bad. The summers are unbeatable in terms of weather (long days that usually don't get too hot). Hunting here has been a challange (only one season in the field so far). Western MT is all trees. I was used to hunting the sage and oakbrush of western CO where you can see for miles. Here, you are lucky to see for a hundred yards. Makes for a totally different type of hunting. Good luck with your Montana hunt. Wish I could recommend you a place to go.

So what line of work are you in? Do you live right in Meeker, or outside town?

Mark

That is ok, buddies girlfriend is from a big cattle ranch in central montana so we should be set for hunting grounds (unless he pisses her off, sure hope not lol). I am over around Ft. Collins right now, but heading back asap.
