Hi..

My dad is 82 years old drew a LE ( any bull)Manti bull tag for late Sept early Oct. Dad loves to hunt and his last bull was a spike in 66' ( in those days they were hard to come by? He has hunted all his life. Not real successful but some great outings we had. We live in Utah County.
I know this will be his last chance at a mature bull and need some opinions on how to do get him into some elk. Dad and I have hunted deer for many years but it usually ends up being just a memorable outing with him which I'd take any day.
Dad can't hike far and I really not sure how and where to hunt. He love's the 12 mile drainage but I think it has too much access and pressure... there might be better areas on the Manti we are not aware of. We have a friend that offered to take him into the lower hills/fields above Manti .

My question is three fold..We are not looking for a 400 bull btw just something that he could to make the draw successful.

1. Would a guide want to tackle this where he is limited in hiking and shooting abilities? Had a heart bypass 10 years ago that slowed him down.( he is a little stubborn too on using a guide if you know what I mean.)Thinks he really doesn't need one.His mind says yes but his body might say no to going at it alone.
Is it too late to find someone reliable that would tackle this?
Any outfitters you would suggest?
2. Should we try to get him over water in a blind?

3. What would a guide cost wtih tip and everything.

In general what do you reccomend.

Hey, I don't think a guide is necesary. There are plent y of places up there for him to "road hunt" and see some descent bulls. I have an archery tag this year up there and my hunt is over the mid of Sept. I would love to tell you where the bulls are when the hunt is over and give you a general area or even specifics. that will give you 2 weeks to go and find them or scout for him. If you want to p.m. me, I will tell you some more stuff about the area and places.

Berg, I know someone will step up and give you the help you need to make your Dads hunt both fun and successful, thats how we roll on this site

Boy you guys are sensitive arent you.Make one comment and evreyone jumps on the bandwagon.Sorry if I hurt your feeling.
And Iam sure the only way you can make a point is by calling someone a name. And man that hurts my feelings(wah wah)
ElkDreamer It looks like you dont play well with others so you should be put in timeout for now.

If your dad is still hunting bulls at 82 thats awesome. My dad is 56 and he is having a hard time.My grandpa hung up his boots about 10 years ago at the age of 70.Man i miss hunting with that guy.Dont let this POS.Tell you whats what at 82 he'll be in a wheelchair or dead.NOT CHASING BULLS!I hope your dad smokes a monster.I just wish he was here in NM so i could help

I could give a @#$% less if an 82 year old man trying to get in a last bit of hunting by road hunting. Give the man a break. I'll pay the ticket if he gets one. he might not have much time left to have another chance.

A guide that knows his stuff is always worth the money in my opinion.

Bull

+1 bull if your concerned bout being able to get an elk this is the only way to go. you have to remember this is his probably his last chance at a bull why not make it as memorable as possible? Im a guide so i have a bit of a biased opinion, but considering the circumstances, i would strongly consider hiring someone who knows the mountain and the elk on it. you wont regret it as long as you do your homework on the guy. good luck and hope you have a great hunt with your dad. the only other thing i recommend is make memories and dont be to concerned with the gross inches it will score. make this hunt the greatest last hunt you can and have a blast doin it!

Hey Guys,
Here's an idea.Let's try to make this a great hunt for this
gentleman.I say let's take up a collection and hire him a guide
and get him a big bull.I know some of you guys are guides on here anyone willing to help out on the pricing??
Let's appoint someone to collect the funds and get the ball rolling. What do you guys think??

Not a bad idea AZ. Will a guide stand up and take a lower price, then we can raise the money for whatever the guide will do it for? Come on Guides... do the right thing!

Berg,

I'm not from Utah and can't offer anything constructive in the way of help. But, I am glad for you and your dad that he still hunts. I hope he finds success and fun on this hunt.

Hello again...Berg here... I appreciate all the good info and suggestions for my father.
I got a few PM's and an e-mail so far that I need to follow up.

On the cost of the hunt... My brother and I should be able to
take care of that. I appreciate the offer, but the greatest help to us would be to find the right guide and location for his abilities. With your suggestions we should be able to do that.
Great forum you have here.

I'll be gone until saturday to Wyoming for work so I'll check back then.
And CamoUp your ok buddy.. I know what you meant.
It's all good.

Utah makes it easy for hunters with disabilities you can get a permit that will let you hunt from a truck off the roads. so yes he can road hunt in utah read the proc.

Well, right were he is standing in the picture ain't a bad place to start. There is always bulls in the foothills at the bottom of the canyon also. That might be your best bet. PM if you need any more help.

Berg,
In my oppinion there is not another person on earth that deserves that tag more than your dad. Call me. I'll do it for free! I know the Manti well. I can't help you the opening week but if you are willing to ride with me a couple of trips I will show you several areas where you should be able to shoot a descent bull from the truck. If you haven't killed a bull by then I will come and help you the last several days of the hunt. We will make this a hunt for all of you to remember. I know it can be pretty intimidating to have a tag like that with someone that has all the heart and mind but the body has some limitations. We will make it work. I will bring one of my guides with me. This is not a hollow offer. I would consider it a privelage.

It's always an adventure!!!

Berg,
I hope that your Dad gets the bull of his and your dreams. My dad is 84 now and at 82 was on a cow elk hunt. He has similar health issues as your dad so I know exactly how you feel as this might well be his last hunt. I do not live in Utah but if I knew the area I would love to help. Good luck and I hope you have the best hunt ever! Let us know how you do.
