Northern Utah Elk

I am among the many nitwits in Utah that didn't get their Northern Rifle Muley tag in time. They have been sold out for about a month already. There is still a ton of "Any Bull Elk" tags available though. I was going to pick one up, but haven't hunted Bulls in my area (Northern Utah).

My question is; Is it worth it to pick up the tag? Are there some bulls in my area accessible on public land that anyone could point me in the right direction of?

Nothing specific of course, just looking for a little general info. or input.

Thanks...

LAST EDITED ON Jul-25-08 AT 11:51PM (MST)[p]Tons of elk.... all you need is boot leather, and the will to want to find one.

where in Northern utah are you talking? because until you specify a location i cant give you a non-specific answer on the where abouts of the elusive big stinky!

i do know of 3 or 4 bulls between 310- 380 that i would gladly give you coordinates to,( you know help save you the time in scouting an area properly) depending on the size of bull you desire, and the area you have a tag for!

let me break this down for you.........you say"Are there some bulls in my area"------- i say ....its your area, go look and tell me! Once you do that then you can answer this question--"Is it worth it to pick up the tag?". Simple enough.

*edit, i was going to say some kind of opology, but i apparently i just ran out.

if you like to hunt it is worth it! but if you have to kill something you may be dissapointed. i went five years until i killed my first bull, and it took me about 8 years to find a good spot and learn how to hunt elk. but now i feel i can kill a bull every year because i found a good spot and i learned how to hunt them.

my advise, find a big chunk of public ground, hike your butt off looking for elk and sign. if your not seeing them keep moving. the N. slope is a great place to hunt but you wont see alot of animals.

I live in West Roy. Have hunted deer on private land for 10 years in East Canyon. Pretty familiar with the Ogden/Logan/Morgan areas. Also do a lot of coyote and rabbit hunting out west of Ogden. I love the hunt, I love to walk and hike around. I spend the majority of my time stuck in a kitchen, so I enjoy the outdoors any chance I get. I will put in the time and effort, no problem there.

Thanks

Never see much sign of them up there until later in the year. Our camp has always pulled some nice bucks out of there, but in all my hiking around/brush busting (I am the youngest guy in camp)I haven't seen much sign. Maybe I need to go higher?

what ground around east canyon? i live in morgan so im not very far from there. what type of country is it? sage, aspen, oakbrush?

well said one dry boot if you are a novice and just want a good chance at an elk you are better off with a spike tag.the any bull hunts can be tough unless you do alot of homework and have hunted it for years

We usually hunt on the North side of the road going up to the reservoir. Sage at the bottom of the flats, Oak brush thicker than you could beleive, and alot of cedars way up there. There is a few canyons I saw at the end of the Deer hunt last year that had some nice pine pockets.

How about the West facing range from Weber Canyon to Ogden Canyon? Anyone hunted that range for Elk?

chef there are plenty of elk up north if you need proof just stop by hardware ranch they don't stay there all the time . I sled up that way alot during the winter and have seen plenty of elk roaming the hills. Its going to be some work getting to them but they are there
Good Luck and Great Memories

chef, i think i know where your talking about. i know there are elk up there. if you can hunt it for elk it may be a good spot up high in the pines and ceders. we saw a good bull up there bugling last year during the bow hunt. but we were at the lake spotting. they will get pushed around alot up there with the different land owners. plus the state ground thats close by. if your looking to hunt elk from weber to ogden good luck. i think you will see more sheep than elk. but you never know unless you go.

Chefchad, send me a IM. where do you hunt at east canyon. I have property up that way also.
