Why did 2004 produce so many big bucks?

Just curious of everyones opioion on why 2004 produced so many big bucks. I live and hunt in southern Utah and I know of a ton of quality animals taken this year. Even better is that I've seen numerous big bucks on the winter range this year and two pigs that would absolute gag anybody.

Everybody knows why, and if you don't let me beat someone else to the punch. Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife. Atleast that's what they're telling everyone.

Nevermind the fact that Utah hasn't had a real winter in over 10 years and that the snow conditions in '04 were perfect for an amazing season.

I'm not saying that SFW didn't have anything to do with it, but the latest issue of their publication is one hell of a pat on their own back. C'mon guys lets not hog all of the credit.

I give 90% of the credit to mother nature and what she gives one year she can take away the next several!!!!!

After reading my post it sounds little more harsh towards SFW than I had wanted. Without a doubt, SFW does some great things for our mule deer.

However, I think there were a lot of factors that led up to the success of the 2004 hunt.

Everybody has to agree that off shore drilling, SUV,s bovine burping and the war in Iraq are causing incredible GOLBAL WARMING. This trend is allowing the wintering grounds to have fewer days of frozen snow and more of warm rain. Sound good?

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING BASIN CATS ARE ******

Hey Bobcat, is it too much to ask for you to hit your "Capslock" button? I would appreciate it, thanks..............rf

2004 was a good year for the hunters, not so good for the deer. It will be interesting to see how 05' turns out, the feed should be great if there's anything left to eat it. With the majority of the deer already on the winter range during rifle season it was a total slaughter in the area I was hunting. Some guys have no shame, every fawn that had nubs was hittin' the dirt. Opening morning I was set up in the bottom of a drainage where I could glass up 4 different canyons and there were a ton of deer, lots of little bucks and everytime one would crest over a ridge it sounded like WWIII. A guy that was working at a DWR check point emailed me a bunch of pictures that he took and it's incredible the amount of good bucks that were taken. I just hope that the DWR and everybody else doesn't have the misconception that the deer heards are back because of the numbers 2004 produced because 2005 could be a pretty sorry year.

This is the kind of post this site was meant for, and keeps me coming back, but Bobcat and udder...flippin grow up man!!!......

If it was all about the Snow....how come we saw a ton of big azz bucks taken by archery hunters??

I think I'm gonna have to agree with Bobcat on this one....97,000 hunters, there's gonna be more than a few nice bucks killed. Snow or not.

Because Utah hasn't had any significant winter kill for 10 years, with the exception of a few pockets up north.

I reread the "Sportsmans Voice" and have to laugh cause the magazine makes it sound like there weren't ANY big bucks in Utah 10 years ago (which was right after our last hard winter). Well, DUHHHH! Even with the hard winter I know of enough big bucks that were taken 10 years ago to fill the magazine with all sorts glory pics.

And they were taken before the era of big money landowner, conservation, and CWMU tags. Not that these tags are (all) bad, but to think we owe a recovery in our deer herds to them is selfserving to a few and very dangerous to the majority of Utah's hunters.

In some state other than UTAH, imagine that.... it was because the stupid game department extended the hunting season which happened to be at the same time as an early rut, and many of the big boys got taken. Next year is probably going to SUCK.

The snow was the obvious answer here in Utah. But booner bucks in good numbers were taken in almost every western state this last season. I for one am stoked for next year. Overall deer numbers may not go up any,but I am definately seeing a good number of older age class bucks onthe winter range, at least in my neck of the woods.

There was the Colorado 3rd season slaughter of '02. Where heavy snow came right before the season opened resulting in lots of buck deaths. Maybe someone from Col. can give us their opion on the number of bucks the following season.

Mother nature was kind this past year with a wet spring and an early snow fall. I still suspect there will be some good quality bucks in Southern Utah next year. I hunted in the Fillmore, Utah area in 2004 and observed several 170 to 190 bucks taken. I have been back several times with the spotting scope and observed several good bucks that made it through the season, as well as numerous yearlings and medicore bucks. I do know that several land owners in the are, including my family, that have posted their property in the area do to problems with hunters this past year. I guess it only takes a few bad apples to spoil a bunch.
