WY Preference Point Question

Hello All:

I'll have (3) points going into the Jan 09' drawing.....my buddy will have (1)....

Question- We want to hunt unit 38 in the Bighorns. We will average our points together.....which would be (2)....Can we pick a very difficult unit as our 1st choice (one that we won't draw)....like unit 31...and then place unit 38 as our 2nd choice?

Will this diminish our chances of drawing unit 38 in a 2nd choice option?....I guess it really depends on the electronic # the computer spits out for our "group" tag application....correct?

My thought is we'd be gauranteed a tag for Unit 38 (in the 1st choice premium PP pool)with (2) averaged points between us....I was thinking we would pay for the premium tag and still keep our points if we drew unit 38 as a 2nd option. I'd rather not blow all 3 points when my buddy is only contributing (1) point. If I can retain my points and still draw a premium tag, that would be great.

Assuming your talking about the "Special Non-resident tag", and based on 2008 applicant numbers, your plan will not work.

The first year of the preference point system, Wyoming issued tags to second and third choice applicants with points before first choice applicants without points, but they changed that for this year.

It appears there were 26 first choice applicants with less than
point who did not draw, and they would be ahead of all the second choice applicants to get tags.

If you are willing to spend the money on the Special tag, there are units you can draw as a second choice, and keep your points, but I don't think 38 will be one of them.

Ah ha....I thought the system worked on a computer # for the draw....If your # is picked and you have almost max points (but not max), your 1st choice is checked for availability....if not, you receive a PP, and then your 2nd choice is checked for availability and so on.....I just figured that with "near" max points, there would still be tags left over in the premium preference point draw, although I picked another unit as a 1st choice....that's even harder to draw....I guess we will average our points together, burn'em, and be virtually gauranteed 2-tags for unit 38.....not a bad situation for sure.
