Last year SFW got a $5 increase on deer tags in Utah.

As a rusult, about 650 coyotes can no longer be with us.
Since jan 1st wildlife services have killed coyotes in almost every fawning area in the state, and will continue as good snow will allow.
The exciting thing is a guy from Delta named Bryce, has volunteered to push the dwr and wildlife services to get things done.He even goes out and locates coyotes in the areas their flying. One of the best days was on the cache and northern ut.
He said some days they get over 20 yotes, and there's lots of funding left, and their goal is 1000 coyotes a year, it looks like they'll make that easy.He also has been going to the county officials in each county to help them set up county coyote bounties,(another SFW sponsored program they got through the legislature a few years ago.)Do you have coyote bounties in your county? If not there is state matching money for your county.

Bryce is a hell of a guy and is working like crazy to help the deer herds in Ut.
A BIG THANKS TO YOU BRYCE FOR YOUR EFFORTS!!!!!
AND THANKS SFW FOR GETTING THE FUNDING FROM THE LEGISLATURE!!!

Warm wet winter + alot less predators = more deer.thank you !thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you!

The only good song dog is one in my crosshairs with a 25-06 handload headed its direction. S P L A T!

(Darn a little blood goes a long ways. Too bloody for MM ; )

This sounds like a great program.
some people wonder what they could do to help the deer herds and this is a great example. Instead of moaning and groning about the deer herds get off you butts and do sometheing about it.
this is the first time writing in and I am shocked about what little response you received on this.
please email me with more information so I could start something like this in my state. [email protected]

less coyotes = more deer

I live in Idaho and really dont know much about getting legislation passed. How much money do you get on a coyote in these different counties.how do you prove you killed the coyote, the whole coyote or just a paw.

There are check in places in the counties. The bounty is $20
you have to bring in the whole dog. Then they clip the ears. This prevents cheating.
Go to www.sfwsfh.org ckeck the left side of the page to locate your state.Contact the SFW rep near you and get involved to make it happen in your state.

I think a lot less coyotes is a good thing. We now need to get a lot less cats as well! Keep up the great work boy's! Maybe the deer herd will actually do a tad better!? Only time will tell.

I just sent a letter to the state of Montana proposing exactly what you just mentioned. I suggested just a two dollar increase in license fee's to cover the cost. Problem is, I'm sure the state will say such a program would never work. How did the sportsman of Utah respond to the license increase?

I really wish something like this could be implemented to help the deer herds out in MT. The deer numbers seem to be less and less every year and part of it has to be contributed to the coyote numbers. The coyotes run in packs and are often pretty clever when when it comes to hunting deer. I've watched from hill tops as one coyote will act as a decoy just sitting there while three or four more are senaking in on the deer. We also have a major mountain lion problem. While shed hunting one year, I found 19 deer that were drug up into the rocks and partially burried that weren't there the previuos fall.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-03-05 AT 09:59PM (MST)[p]Coming from a predator hunter, I hate to see this happen. Could be succesful but more than likly the coyotes will just bounce back within 5 years or so and then it will be labled a failure.
Yes I know Coyotes kill deer, and i too would like to see and increase in mule deer population, but not sure this measure will help much, besides it sure sucks for us predator hunters.

I got a call today from my neighbor begging me to shoot more coyotes. He had 3 calves and a cow that was in the middle of giving birth killed this week by those little bastards. I set up my treestand about 80 yards from the carcass of the cow and hope to do some shooting this evening. My calves arent due until june, so I have a little time to get them all. If that is possible. Haahaaa...

There are a lot of coyotes here in Rich County. Hopefully, they can dispatch some up here. I know the locals have been getting a lot when they have been out snowmobiling. If any of you "predator" hunters need some areas to go, PM and I will give you some areas to try.
