Anybody out there hunted unit 142 ? My dad has enough points to draw and wants a plains buck. Are there better plains units for muzz out there with good public access ? I think 142 is overrated as of late but we are not looking for a monster. We are open to whitetails too. He is 66 and has a hard time getting around, thats why we were considering a plains hunt. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I think 142 is Pinon Canyon Depot? I know 2 guys that shot good bucks there. 1 guys 3 years ago killed a 210 non-typical. I think 136 has alot of public ground and thats why it takes so many points as there isn't much public land on those eastern plains, and it has good bucks as well. I hunted in unit 109 2 years ago and had a good time, some good mulies and bomber whities. Hope this helps.

Bruin,

I spent a week in 142 last year (the end of November and first half of December). Saw some good bucks in there. The rut hunt would be a good fit for your dad. Not sure about the muzzleloader season. Would be glad to tell you anything I know. PM me if you want more info.

I went there with a friend 10 years ago and he killed a great buck which was in Eastmans. I finally drew in 2000 and killed a 28 1/2 in. 200 B&C. I think those were the best bucks killed those years but we saw other good deer. I think it would be a great spot to take your dad. There is alot of flat country that holds good bucks. Even now I think if you are willing to stay for the whole hunt you will do well. We hunted the rifle hunts though. Send me an email and I can share a picture and info. [email protected]

I'm sorry Gary but I did that wrong. I think I got it this time I sent it to the MM server and will try again later when I get the address back from them.

Thanks for the input guys. I was under the impression that this unit had slipped of late and that it was getting more difficult to get access thru the Army. Definately be looking into an early October muzz hunt there next year. We should all have enough points to draw then. We all want bears and elk this year. Thanks again.

I finally got my picture so I can post it. I think the quality of the unit has slipped some but I think it is still a good unit. Many of the hunters do not try very hard. When I was there in 2000 one guy left after 2 days! He said he had work to do and an upcoming Elk hunt.

Hey Bruin,
I would suggest that you really check it out for the muzzy hunt. I bowhunted there in 2002 and the access really sucked we only hunted there for 3 days because of it. If you are not going for the gun season then it is hard to get more than a weekend at a time to hunt in there. and even if you get that weekend you don't get to hunt the whole thing because of the check in and out times. If i remember correctly you cannot check in until 8:00am on saturday and you have to be out by 4:30 on sunday. This really put a hamper on our hunting time. Like i said though i would call and make sure of what the rules are this year and you will probably have to keep calling them all year beacause they don't tell you all you need to know untill way late in the year. As far as the deer though there are some real keepers still running around in there.

Thanks for all the heads up and good info everybody. Just looking for some new ideas for next fall.
