33 Days & counting
Sept 5th, I'm headed to New Mexico for my first Elk/Mule Deer hunt. I'm 38yrs old and cant remember getting this fired up over anything.
I need to pick some veteran ELkaholics brains thou, I'll be hunting in unit 51 and located a spot to camp on my Delorme Topo 7.0 up in the northern part of the unit.
I wanted to ask what others recommend for Topo maps to keep with me while hunting? order them from MyTopo or go thru the USGS & get them.
Also, hows the mule deer population in that unit? I got a mule deer tag and was curious what my odds were of seeing one.

Being it's my first mountain hunt and I come from South Louisiana where its flatter then flat I've been running as much as possible and ordered some of the Wilderness Athelete products to hopefully prepare me for the altitude change...is there anything else you recommend me to do or prepare for other then conditioning and altitude difference? I've gotten good boots, pack frame, rain gear, tent etc but is there something that jumps out at you that I havent thought of?

Appreciate any response's

Vance
