I have a tag for the san Juan early elk and need help. wont bore you with the details but i just made my first trip down to the unit to take a look and learned a ton. I know im off to a late start in preparing for this but if anyone has info on the unit that they would be willing to share? i would be much obliged. and if they would be willing....a contact number. thanks.

My brother in law has a managment tag. We would only be able to shoot 5xwhatever... but no 6x6. Basically one side has to have 5points. So you can guess that we will be passing on several good bulls and would love to help you out. Vice versa.

When are you going down. Archery I assume? We plan to spend the first week of september on the unit and go till we get something.

email me more specific info and we can connect for this incredible hunt!

If you learned the roads and lookouts you will be fine. The unit is really two units. One is steep and rugged, the other is flat. Both have there advantages. The steep one you can see the bulls, the flat one you can move toward the bugles very easily. Decide what terrain suits you best and you will find bulls.

I had a tag there 4 years ago and seen bulls everyday. If you have not been there I would spend a couple of days getting to know the area. We went in through the Bears Ears. We consentrated by a place called Kigilia (spelling). It is flat and you can walk for days. Make sure you have a GPS with you and mark your camp and your vehicle. We chased some bulls one night until it was to dark to see and had no idea where we were. The GPS helped us get back to camp. There was not a day went by that we would not hear elk bugle. Once we heard a elk bugle we could get on to them within 80 - 100 yards but they would not responed to any calls. That is until the last 2 days for the archery hunt. If I had it to do all over, I would find a wallow and put a stand above the wallow. I would make sure that you are in your stand at least an hour before light. We found a wallow 2 days before the hunt ended and was in there the last day about 1/2" before light. To late, there were 4 bulls in the area. Find a wallow that is being used, put a stand up, get in early and you will have a succesful hunt.

Hope this helps.

it is a "once in a lifetime" tag anymore... you may want to consider hiring some help. I know that some guys on this site are opposed to that sort of thing, but when my dad drew a tag on that unit I hired Todd Black of BTO. Not only did he help us have an amazing hunt... but he became a very good friend. He would definitely take care of you. There are some great bulls on that unit. The trick is to hold out for the right one. My dad ended up shooting a 380+ monster with his muzzle loader. It was an amazing experience experience.

btw... leave your bugle at home. There are very few cows on the unit. Just work your cow call and you will be amazed at what happens. Here is a link to one that I filmed that Todd called from over 1,000 yards away to about 4 feet. Hit the link, then click on "close up bull".

Good luck! You are in for a very fun hunt!

Kim,

Good luck on your hunt! Do you have enough help for your hunt? Be patient and slam a giant one! Take the time to contact each of these guy's. With your tag it should be a tremendous hunt! Stop by my Dad's place with some pic's when your all done! Can't wait to see your bull! Have a great day!

Chad

If you hire someone I would go with BTO as well, they know the unit very well and they are a bunch of good guys and you will end up harvesting a good good bull.

Sixpointer,

I drew a San Juan tag in '05. I have always been a DIY guy and kind of prided myself in it. But, my wife and I had complications with our first boy and I wan not able to go down and scout. My friend had been with the guys from BTO the last two years and asked me when I planned on drawing this tag again? I told him it would be a lot of years and he said exactly! Make it worth it. I went with BTO and am so glad that I did. It was more than a hunt, it was a landmark in my hunting career. But, even more than being able to punch my tag on a trophy, I met life-long friends that I still do stuff with today. What was cool about them is they kind of pride themselves in keeping prices low enough that the average guy like you and I can still afford a hunt of a lifetime. Give them a call or send me a pm and we can talk about them and the unit.

Jake
