Back in 1987, I had the good fortune to get to hunt on the Baca Ranch in New Mexico. For those not familiar with the Baca, it is now known as the Valles Caldera National Preserve, and has some of the best elk hunting in America. I was rifle hunting during the first week of October, and it was unreal with the rut going full blast and big bulls all over the place.
I had never killed a big typical 6 pt bull, so that's what I had my heart set on. The second morning, we got on a bugling herd bull, and he walked right out in front of me at 20 yards. He looked perfect at first glance, but not so good at second glance. He had about a 360 class frame, but his right side was all screwed up. He had a normal left antler, and his right antler was also a normal 6 pt frame, but then he had this big growth at the base of the right antler, and a huge spike coming off of it, probably over 30" long, next to that was a 3rd main beam going straight up that forked into two long points on top. Finally, he had a drop tine coming off the base and going down past his right ear and it ended in a big ball like a grapefruit.
I wanted a typical 6 pt. bull, so I let him walk away. As soon as I had a better look at him, and came to my senses, I decided I wanted him but by then he'd eluded us and we never saw him again. The next day I killed a beautiful 6x6 that grossed 338"+.
While I've always appreciated and enjoyed that 338 bull, I've never forgotten about the big non-typical that I could have, and should have, shot when I had the chance.
There is no question in my mind that I'd shoot the big non-typical if the opportunity presents itself.
I'll let you all know how it goes in about 5 weeks.
