drew an area 9 tag but have never hunted here. any help would be appreciatd....

Ozark, go to the New Mexico forum and search under Unit 9. You will see a lot of posts on this unit, some with better info than others. Lot's of opinions on the unit, especially with regard as to where to hunt as there is quite a bit of variation in terrain in this unit. And, a lot depends on which hunt and what dates you are going on. Which hunt did you draw?
There are some very big bulls quietly taken out of this unit. However, this is more the exception than the rule for the unit as there are a lot of raghorns to 280" bulls. Check out the NM forum as some of the threads will lead you to some good general areas in the unit where, with a bit of legwork, you should be able to get into some elk. There are a few of us who have spent a lot of time in the unit, harvested some nice bulls, and have written a bit on it in those posts. Check them out. Big bull spots are kept under a tight lid as this is a popular unit due to its proximity to Albuquerque. But, if you poke around in the NM forum you will likely find a bit of useful information.
