LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-08 AT 06:10PM (MST)[p]In your opinion, what is the best cow elk call you can buy?

primos and e.l.k. inc. calls are the best IMO.

I really like the sceery ace 1. Works very well. Primos Hoochie mama sounds great too. Personally I have found a combination of diaphram calls with both mentioned calls works best! Good luck!

Hoochie Mama calls are great. However, their reliability is mediocre at best. When it gets really cold, or the are used a lot the can cause problems. I would pack an extra.

In my opinion, diaphram calls are the most versatile and realistic sounding. In terms of exterior reed calls then I'd say carlton's fighting cow call.

I second the diaphragm calls being my first choice. I also use the Mossback Widowmaker with great success. I HATE the Hoochie Mama and think it is the worst call on the market.

PRO

Define, develop, and sustain BOTH trophy and opportunity hunts throughout the state of Utah.

i second the hoochie mama being junk...good externals are carlton's fighting cow and estrus whine and i like primo's hot lips and hyper lip...i always use a diaphragm too...find what works best for you...

Hoochie mommas wor for a pocket call. But you can only make three sound with it and they sound the same every time you cant manipulate the sounds at all, and i doesnt reach out there very far.Pluss they brake and sound like crap,it does have uses and i carry it but the hyper lip single is the best call primos has ever made.IMO!

Actually I've had great luck with a Hoochie. Cup the end and you can alter the sounds quite a bit. I cant do the diaphram calls, it makes me cough.

A broken Hoochie Mama call works great for calling in coyotes. I called a coyote in to 10 yards last year with it. I usually go through 1 Hoochie Mama call a year.

Have been hearing for awhile about the Hoochie Mama having some "quality issues". However, I have used mine since they hit the market and have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS with it.

As someone said earlier, it is limited in the sounds you can make with it but it is virtually "idiot proof". Very easy to operate and very effective.
At least the two bulls I harvested (and a couple dozen others called in, but not harvested) thought so, , ,

The Hyper Lip Single is the best call out there! Easy to use, extremely versatile in the sounds you can make (with practice), and loud enough to reach out there.

Finally, the Ivory Plate diaghram call is what I use to stop em at the final moment before the shot.

I own most of the other calls mentioned but have found these to be the BEST COW ELK CALLS. Get any of the Primos bow hunting for elk videos, listen to how they use the calls, and you will be successful.

Carlton fighting cow or primos hyperlip or I make the bull crazy. Also love the primos diaphram calls for when im in close and need to stop em for the shot.

Primos cow girl and the Woodswise Hyperhot cow call.
OMB

There's room for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed taters and gravy.

I use the Hoochie Mama call...had cows, yearlings, and bulls all come into it every year. I've had mine for 3 seasons and never had a problem. Sounds the the hyper lip would be a good route too...I might have to go to Sportsmans on my lunch break :)

Haven't had alot of elk hunting experience but the first day I ever hunted elk (Rifle), my friend borrowed one of my Carlton fighting cow calls and called in one bull which he took. Then that afternoon I was using the same call and had a stopped a cow which then caused the bull to stop behind her. Another elk on the ground. Then I borrowed it to another in our party and he had a spike come within about 10 feet of him while calling with it. It's just a little green plastic call but I can get alot of higher pitches that I can't with other calls and it's easy to use.

I also have the hootchie mama on my belt along with the carlton estrus squeeze me call and a Sceery call. I have a hard time calling with the sceery call though.

I always hold my hands to the side of my mouth and let out a big MOOOOOOOOO. I have not had much luck yet, but patience and perserverance always prevails!? I think? :)

Primos hyperlip single with the tone conveter and the "Sleezy" cow call from Berry Best Game calls. Most of the calls will work it's the operator that makes them sound real or not.

my favorites are the sleazy cow and a custom call from tyyote on predator masters.
the little cow calf call that has two open reeds and a little bowl in the middle works great too [also is a excellent coyote call]
the sleazy cow call breaks easy so carry several last year i went threw 6 calls.
hoochie mamma's do great background calls to mix with your favorite call to sound like several cows.
carlton's squeeze call,hi-per lips cow girls and all the ones mentioned are great but i love my custom calls too.
i can do great cow calls on any open reed call so i use my elk antler tip custom call by tyyote, mule deer antler open reed from death card calls, my hybrid from arky yoter its a coyote call from a mule deer antler and acrylic that can be used as a open reed or a closed reed coyote call.
last count i have 78 deer and elk calls and over 100 coyote calls and about 10 custom calls. vary few of them don't work or are hard to use.
i couldn't count how many i have lost broken or wore out.

cmiddleton, How are you breaking the sleazy? The only problem I've ever had is with the rubber band rotting and cracking. It's an easy fix with any type of rubber band doubled up. I've even used my daughters hair rubber bands as replacements.

stressing the plastic by the tone block. bends or breaks right next to the pillar. also bands
the maker of this call must love me because i use so many of them.
they are still my favorite call i plan on using them up.
Circe and rod hydel have to love me to with as many gh cottontail and mvp-3's i go threw ever year.
my calls that break fowl and get lost are the ones i use the most.
last year i bow hunted elk 23 days in Wyoming. 7 in our party all filled. i didn't get the one i was after so when rifle came out i shot a spike. if i get one mounted i want it to be with my bow. i was hoping to get to go after Elvis [7x7 bull] this year but nnoooo g&f forgot to draw my name
i carry spares so i don't have to fix a call in the middle of a set.
this year i don't have a tag so the call makers are going to have a bad year

LAST EDITED ON Aug-18-08 AT 09:32PM (MST)[p]I threw two Hoochie Mommas down a ravine. They suck if they get wet or freeze up and you cannot vary the speed and inflection. I prefer a homemade mouth reed.. Much more reliable imo.

I'd like to add.
no calls last for ever, closed reed calls need voices replaced, open reed calls get a film on the reeds or they warp from the sun.
hoochie mommas are good calls they work well and come in handy to sound like more than one cow. you can throw the sound behind you and call with your mouth call of choice at the same time even overlapping the calls.
I've called lots of elk with a Carlton push call in one hand a hoochie in the other and a sleazy in my teeth. they all work they all wear out.
sound is what matters and push calls have good sound.
I'll use three Montana decoys and three calls. all wear out even the decoys.
open reed last longer and cost less due to the simple design.
but i think they are all good.
every type of call i have used will work some are easier than others some last longer than others all must be replaced or maintained. push calls are just the type you replace rather then replace a reed or band.
not trying to change anyone's mind just informing the people who haven't formed a opinion to try them and use the ones you can use with success. i have had good success with push, open, bite, banded and every thing.
the mac daddy i'm sure works for others its just easier for me to use other stiles.
when i leave camp I'll have a fanny pack full of calls but i always have at least two sleazy, at least one open reed, one coyote call because I'm a coyote junky and a collection of other elk calls that I'll pick that morning and two push calls.
yep I'm a call-a-holic
