I see a hundred rubs a day when out hiking, but this one struck a cord. I was trying to gain the top of the ridge, and I was going through the nastys of nastiness when I hit this pocket with this bright rub in it. The buck was still living in this pocket somewhere. His big blocky tracks were very evident. The weird thing about this is that there is usually about 10-12 feet of snow here. Not this year. I wish I could hav seen him or his drop antler, but maybe next trip.

Often I find fresh rubs about the time the antlers start to drop. If I see a rub from a distance I always walk over and look under the tree. Never an antler, but I keep looking.
With the days getting longer and the signs of spring showing, I'm getting excited about looking for elk antlers. I have some time off in March, but I can't decide between a trip to Montana or stay in Washington.

I would say go where there is snow. The elk are just as scattered as the deer are. I'm surprised they are even feeding at a couple of the lots. I'm finding elk whee they normally summer, thats going to make it hard to find as many antlers.

I always love finding those big gnarly rubs...helps me conjure some awesome pictures in my mind!

Dont come to Montana if you are looking for snow. I heard of a friend with a late season cow tag that came home after the first day this last weekend. In an area that you can normally glass 1000+ elk from the road they saw zero. All the elk were miles back in the wilderness.....
