This is a bull my brother killed opening morning on the south cache. We had to strip the velvet, and need some help on how to stain the horns. Any advice would be appreciated.

Its hard to see but we left plenty of cape, in fact we already have it at the taxi. The velvet on the far side was way trashed, so the taxidermist told us it would be better to strip it because of how it was. we were pretty upset about it!

Thats a good looking bull, were you on water? I was on Dutton but did not have much luck on the opener. What did he score by the way?

LAST EDITED ON Aug-18-08 AT 10:39AM (MST)[p]Yes we were on water, and had seven bulls come in at 4:00 in the afternoon. The full moon had things all screwed up. The best we could ad up was right at 350

rpleish- great looking bull! Love the velvet. No way to keep it on their? Sure is a pretty bull.

I killed a bull in 2003 that was in the same deal, my taxi used shoe polish I believe to get the antlers darkened up. Where the other bulls still in velvet? Most should be cleaned off by now. Congrats on a fine bull!

Nice bull, way to go. I have rubbed them out with pine branches, cedar bark and mud but it takes forever. It gives them the natural color when your done.

Awesome bull, congrats!!
That's about as perfect of a typical bull as you could even draw with a pencil!

Sure looks better than 350" from my angle!

No all the other bulls but one were all still in velvet. It was weird, they weren't acting rutty at all. But you could see on a couple that they were starting to rub.

Same on my hunt, the biggest bull we saw was about a 330 ish class bull and he was all velvet. Saw a few smaller bulls that were clean. Sucks your hunts already over!! But you got a great bull.

my dad shot a deer in velvet and when he died he rubbed the velvet on the ground. the taxi airbrushed the color in. it looks awsome.

He is a beautiful bull. I helped strip the velvet and it took about 5 minutes. Every tip was through and there was basically no blood left so those out running around still should lose it pretty quick. It was interesting how the tips looked like they had all been polished smooth. He'll look great with the antlers stained and bright white tips.

I HAVE USED LINSEED OIL AND DIRT, JUST TAKE A RAG SOAKED IN LINSEED OIL AND RUB IT IN THE DIRT AND RUB IT ON THE ANTLERS WORKS REALLY WELL

NICE BULL

Great bull man!

I agree with Slam....looks a little bigger than 350 to me.

We were on the Fishlake all weekend and we saw some bulls rubbed and some not.

CANT WAIT FOR THE RUT!!!!!!!!

I saw some stuff one time that you could put on bleached antlers and it would darken them and make them look fresh. You might try a search on the internet. Gotta believe some taxi supply carries the stuff. Nice Bull and one I would be proud to hang my tag on.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-18-08 AT 06:52PM (MST)[p] the deer i had velvet stripped of the taxidermist air brushed color back on it and it looks great.
Nice bull!

I'll second the artificial velevt done buy research manikins. I killed a buck in 07 and unfortunately he rolled and took a lot of velvet off. I had the horns done by the company mentioned above and they look very real. My taxi actually does some air brush touch up to ad more realness. Also most taxi should be able get you some antler stain. I've had a few stained and they look very good.

Nice bull! Congrats!

Nice Bull and one to be proud of, my guess is in the 360 range.

Thanks for all the info on the fake velvet, I am having them send some info for it. How did you all ship the antlers?

I've only shipped antlers once, but I built a reinforced box, covered all the antler tips with garden hose and packed it tight with plastic wrap and news paper...it shipped fine.

Wild Antler Magic does a great job of putting color on antlers. It's a simple process too. You mix the stuff with water until it is the consistency of thin concrete, then you grab a handfull and rub it into the antlers. Rub it in good, then let it dry. Wipe it off of the tips with a damp rag to keep them white. After it dries, you brush off the excess, and use a damp rag to lightly wipe some of the higher areas to bring out the highlights. Once you get it looking right, you spray on a coat of matte clear paint, which seals and darkens everything.

I agree that velvet bull looks great, and it would be unique to restore him as is?

Congrats on a great bull! I think he goes over 350 as well?

My question is Why isn't your taxidermist taking care of the horns and getting the velvet process done?

I thought at first that 350 was a little underjudge but after lookin at him i think they are right. Its a small framed short beamed Six that is symmetrical and gorgeous but not a 360+ bull after you get rid of the velvet it becomes a 350 bull that is just gorgeous. Id be proud of this bull anywhere anytime and congrats on a beaut!
