Questions for the seasoned elk hunter.

1.How long will a bull elk boned out last in 90 degree heat?
2.How much meat will you get off a mature bull?
3.How many game bags do you pack around?

1.Lots of dependers.. if you get it skinned and boned out and cooled off in the shade maybe you need to have it on ice with in 12 hours. if not you will lose some meat...if it dies in the sun you better be there cutting asap..

2. 300 - 350 boned out

3. I have 6 game bags. 4 for the quarters, 1 for the backstrap and tender loins, 1 for neck & rib meat scraps

1. If you dont do anything it will be bad in a hours
2. 350 pounds wow I need a lesson or stop hunting spike only, but Ive been at 175-245 lbs
3. I carry 3 large canvas bags.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-18-08 AT 10:32PM (MST)[p]I usually figure that a big bull will take 6 large game bags. I mean the big heavy cotton bags, not those cheap garbage cheesecloth things. In fact, I use a 7th bag for the cape if we keep it, so you might figure on 7 bags per bull.

As for boned out meat, I've found most mature bulls will yield around 175-250 or so pounds of boned meat, and usually under 225 pounds. That said, I've killed one bull that had well over 300 pounds of boned meat, but he was by far the biggest bodied bull I've ever killed or been around. I got as much boned meat off that bull than from a shiras moose I shot the same year.

If you get it boned out and in the shade, if there's any breeze, it'll be ok for a while. I wouldn't leave it for a day, though, or you're asking to lose meat. If you have it in the shade the day you kill it, that night try to hang it in a cool place like near a creek or something, then the next morning roll it up in some sleeping bags or put it in ice chests and it'll keep just fine. Handling it this way, you'll be surprised at how long you can keep it fresh.

But, I still like to get it either in ice chests with dry ice or at a locker within a few days whenever possible.

I don't know about the heat thing, but the bulls I've killed here in Montana average in the 175 to 250 pounds of boned meat range. Depends on how particular you get with the neck/ribs also. I killed one 6 point that MIGHT have pushed 300. I carry 5 quarter sized bags. Don't forget a small one for the heart and liver if you eat innards! mtmuley

Good info guys

I too had some of the same questions..

How much weight do you carry out each trip?

Frozen

LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-08 AT 04:08AM (MST)[p]Not sure of the weight, but one hind quarter each trip, both front quarters, backstraps, loins and neck meat on the next trip and the rack and cape on the other. If you have three other packers it's done in one trip.

Im a weakling, I try to keep the pack weight around 40 - 50lbs. make 5 or 6 trips counting the one I can out with. ( I carry a packframe with me all the time)

I don't like mamy trips(less hunting time for the other tags), so I carry out 80-110 pounds per trip, I also carry that much so my dad doesn't over do it, he carrys around 40 pounds or so each trip.
