So...
How is everyone fairing with the new season dates?
ZERO elk have been taken by people i know, or have talked to.
thats spike,cow or bulls.
now when this new hunt date was discussed i remember myself thinking,,,,hmmmm going to be hard, and hot.

i was in total favor of a longer bow hunt, but a week at the end, and bump everything else back a week.
that would have been great.

jus wondering what you guys thought.

live life one mule deer at a time.

I think that they need to move the any bull hunt to sept 1 thru 20 and the youth the last week. This would give everyone a chance to hunt the rut if they wanted. The youth and the disabled would still have a great hunt and it would improve the anybull units to they could leave the spike the way it is and make people chose what area they want. what do you guys think?

Due to the early hunt and taking away the last week in the spike only areas I decided not to hunt Utah this year. For 20 years we have always hunted the last week of the archery hunt. I'm still trying to figure out why this last week was removed.
Anyways My friends boy did get a cow last week.

Its been tough, thats for sure. I wish we had more time in the rut, but I dont see that happening any time soon. You cant sell conservation tags for 40K if they gotta hunt in October!

Friend took a cow opening morning. Actually responded to cow calls and broke from the herd to see what/who was making the calls. I still haven't made it out yet for various reasons, but I usually focus on the latter part of the season. I would like to see the general season stay open a bit later also.

I think the combination of the late winter and the early start of the hunt has made it really tough the first week or two. The bulls seem to be at least a week or so behind in stripping there velvet from most years. We usually start seeing the big bulls hard horned by the 5th to the 10th of August this year the bigger bulls did not rub until around the 12th and 13th.

if you drew a tag than quit complaining. You have the exact same ending period as you had last year you just have 5 days longer to hunt.

The only difference is you will not have to compete with all the other spike hunters blowing their hoochie mammas on the last week of the hunt. Which still ends on the same date as last year?

It is a win win for you

Just curious, I know that the Elk Management team will be getting together in 2010, is there going to be alot of changes in they way things are done? Like seasons? Increasing opportunity? What weapons you can use during the rut?

General archery any bull Aug 16 thru Sept 12

General archery spike Aug 16 thru Sept 7

So you Still have the same ending day as last year just have 5 days more on an any bull unit.

Any time you get 5 days added to your hunt it is a win.

You can thank the cattle men and the DWR for not giving UBA the full proposal they asked for.

Mostly the cattle men and maybe this is one way they are positioning themselves to recieve a few conservation tags.

SFW agreed with the full proposal

in the end you still get the same amount of time to hunt a spike and 5 extra days on an any bull unit win win

Spikes will respond to calls anytime of the year. I still call them in on the Wasatch Front in Aug thru Dec and this is a unit where elk supposedly don't bugle or come to cow calls.

Just be patient guy's,

The hunt dates as Scott suggests did not turn out exactly how they were presented. The process of the RAC's is not a quick process. In the long run we ended up with either the same days to hunt or a week longer for mature bulls and a better experience for those who drew a LE tag by giving them a little space for thier hunt. The best hunting is still to come! Good luck!

It makes no sense to me to start a hunt in the middle of august. The general archery hunts should start the first weekend in Sept. and go three weeks. Its been hot and misserable for the first week, and the next doesnt look to be any better. The rut will just start to turn on by the time the hunt ends, just in time for a bunch of tards to start blasting away with their rifles. It would be laughable if it werent so frustrating. Not only that, but they should pull all the damn livestock off the mountain before the hunts start.

Pretty much agreed dgwoody,

How ya going to make it happen? A lot of bowhunters have and are trying to make that happen. We have been for over 10 years. It is a very slow process that quite frankly may never happen without a huge showing of the public. Help join the efforts, join UBA or BOU, come to the RAC's and voice your oppinions! We need all the help we can get!

For now, good luck on the hunts!

dgwoody

the dates for the general deer rifle hunt were set in stone. That law has been changed so they can now arrange the hunts around. I personaly think a change like you want could happen in the near future. so keep your fingers crossed
