Mt. Emily/Walla Walla Elk

I have the nonresident points to likely draw either of the archery tags for these two units. The way my draw results are coming out, looks like it would be a good year for me to try and burn these. I will likely draw other long awaited for hunts elsewhere in 2015 and 2016. I had been applying for Mt . Emily for years, but it looks like the NR tag there will go to outfitters this year. So the way it is I'd have to wait till 2017 if I want that. However, it looks like I could draw Walla Walla as there is a tag available for that hunt this year. Is there much difference in these units lately? Thanks.

Walla Walla just because I know well 40 years, but I would not wait around to long for either unit the wolves r there. Not much flat ground in both of them get in shape, good bulls in both. Good luck

Good bulls in both units, like stated before who knows for how long with the wolves you wont be disappointed with the Walla Walla, and with the archery hunt starting a week later than last year should be good. Good luck.

Zim, Mt Emily has a non resident tag every year. I would go with a rifle in Mt Emily unless you are just a die hard bow hunter.

I am mostly a bowhunter and have done well on elk. I have 16 points which won't get me a rifle tag. I'd likely have to wait 3-4 years for the pool above me to clear out.

Zim.....I think you should apply for W/W with your 16 pts, so my 15 is in the running for Mt. Emily, lol. Good luck.

Ya there was another MMer that got it last year with only one other in our point pool applying. So I should have a 50% chance next year if I wait.

Same quality of bulls in both units. The Wenaha is a walk in the park and way easier to hunt compared to the WW. Most bulls in the Walla Walla live in yew and tag alder jungles that you have to go around, which usually means climbing or dropping quite aways.

You don't need to drop into the wilderness to find good bulls in the Wenaha, but a half mile in and you'll be alone. If you've never looked at the Walla Walla you might regret it!

Good luck whichever you choose!

Zim, these elk in the "Big Three" units are the same genetics. Its all about what type of country you prefer to hunt. I guide in all 3 of these units, but Mt Emily is my favorite unit to hunt. I have lived in these units almost all of my life, and watch these bulls year round.

Its really about if you are going solo, or guided. If you are going solo, be prepared to spend a lot of time getting to know the area and getting to know the elk.

If you live close to the Blues, it wont be too spendy. But if you live a ways away from the Blues, it will get very costly to scout and to do this tag justice.

We have shot 370+ bulls in all three units, so its really when you want to hunt, and what type of country you prefer.

Good luck on the draw, and feel free to message me.

OK, so now I'm confused. Huntin Fool claims there is only one NR archery tag this year. But there were 56 total tags last year x 5% = 2 tags. So it seems one should go to outfitters and the other to DIYers. Anyone make sense of this? Is here one Unguided tag available if I apply?

Mt Emily has 2 NR tags every year, one to an outfitter and one to draw. Walla Walla and Wenaha have 1 tag each this year and that goes to NR in the draw. Next year it mostly likely will be an outfitter tag.

So are both the Mount Emily tags in the preference pool? I know they use a 75/25% split pref/random.

I went ahead and applied last night. I've struck out on all my other apps so far so this seems like a good year to draw Oregon if I can. Any other 16+ point holders here putting in for this hunt? I expect most would hold out for rifle tags?

I failed to draw this tag, thank god, because I ended up having two major health problems late August that would have prevented me from hunting. But I wanted to see if anyone else on here hunted the archery season in either of these units.

I knew three people with the Walla Walla archery tag. One killed an average bull that was broke on one side. The other two didn't kill anything.

i have been fortunate enough to have drawn both tags as an oregon resident. both are good units for oregon with comparable quality but i think the main difference is that the walla walla unit is a LOT thicker as far as foilage goes. the elk like to hang out in the yew thickets there and it can be very thick. also, the walla walla is slightly steeper and deeper country in general. just my thoughts. both good bow hunts, or used to be before the wolves and cougars got plentiful.

Post started last year so I'm at 17 now. I expect to draw UT Pauns archery deer tag or AZ unit 1 elk tho, so will have to check draw result post dates.

IMO living here on the edge of the units if I had to choose archery for the two it would be Mt. Emily no doubt, much more variety of terrain, you can go steep thick and deep on west emily or high desert open on east emily, both have similar quality elk. We saw several 350" + bulls up there when I had the tag, I was holding out on one of the big ones and ended up killing a 270 class bull toward the end, I could have killed several 310-320 bulls earlier in the season. A friend of mine had the tag last year and passed on lots of really good bulls while chasing a 380+ bull all season. He ended up eating his tag, he already has a 375+ bull under his belt with his bow in Oregon and was going for a personal best or nothing.

If i were going to rifle hunt it would be in Walla Walla hands down, you get an addition 10 days in the season, from the 28th of Oct. until Nov 15th. In Emily its the 7-15th of Nov. Weather can play a huge part during these hunts and fog can set in for several days on end which can ruin a hunt very quickly. There are a lot of trail systems in the walla walla that offer good, decent access to good glassing and with 18 days to glass up a bull if a person puts in the time they should have no problem pulling a 330+ bull out of there or bigger. I have seen trail cam pictures from last year from a friend of a easy 360+ bull in walla walla, two friend have killed bulls with a rifle there in the last 5 years and one was 320ish and the other was a 340 bull if it didn't have a couple broken off points.

Both units are awesome, IMO wolves have had zero impact on the elk in either unit. I have found one wolf kill on emily but have also seen lots of very big bulls in the last couple years. Another friend will draw an archery bull tag for emily this year so I will be up checking cams again this summer if i have time.

NPhunter if you had a choice between rifle or archery on emily/ww witch weapon would you choose.for me weapon choice is secondary to hunt quality.

Same here, Mt Emily though

Thanks for the helpful reviews. I got buried in an avalanche of applicants in AZ running from the expected 2016 point cheapening legislation. So now just waiting on UT deer results to see if go for it in OR.

Actually looks like I will have to apply for Mt. Emily unless UT posts results early. The OR app deadline is prior to the UT post date. However, I'm allowed to change my OR app until June 1st. Very lucky for that.

Emily

I would chose Archery which is what I always apply for. Quality of the hunt will be similar I believe. You will see more elk and plenty of big bulls during the archery season but may not be able to close the deal. During rifle season if you find a big bull you should be able to close the deal if you have a halfway long range rifle. I wouldn't want a rifle out there not capable of a 500 yard shot at minimum.

If the weather sets in during the rifle hunt you will have a tough time finding a good bull because that time of year they are normally alone 3/4 down a giant canyon wall and you will only find them by glassing.

Walla Walla

If I were a rifle hunter I would chose Walla Walla over Emily due to the extended season. Both have very big bulls and lots of them. Walla Walla has a bunch of motorcycle trails in it which can help when running ridges glassing and defiantly while hauling an animal out.

I am not familiar with Walla Walla but am with Emily, both are top Oregon units for a reason and continually produce huge bulls during both Rifle and Archery season.

thanks NP,alaska this year keeps me off the archery season,16 pts makes emily more possible,I am not in a hurry but I need to use up hunts out west as much as I can, to many pts to many hunts not enough time.

>Willamette did your friend get a
>bull?

Yeah, he killed a 330 6x8..

We saw a bunch around that size, a couple in the 340-360 range and one that was right about 375-380.

There was another guy chasing the 380 bull, he didn't get killed last I heard. I saw 60+ bulls in 5 days of scouting as well as 10 or 15 spikes.

Its rough country, but an amazing place to hunt.

Well I'm getting closer by the minute to keeping my app in for Mt. Emily. No CC hits from Utah so far. This was unexpected.

I was thinking I might change my app from PP to wenaha archery, looks like there will be a NR public draw tag this year. But surprise I think I drew Utah muzzy tag.

Good luck to all in Oregon.

LAST EDITED ON May-19-15 AT 04:34PM (MST)[p]Just got official USUC x 5 email from Utah so I'm all in for Mt Emily this year. Really unexpected but glad to have this as potential back up plan. Also longer shot of Metolius archery deer.

Zim,

Sorry to hear you didn't draw your Utah deer tag. Hopefully you will draw Emily. Let me know if you draw it is an awsome hunt!

ODFW white collar thieves with their 2 1/2% NR quota & outfitter welfare ripped me off again. I would have drawn 5 years ago without their bait-n-switch BS & $182 annual free money. Pathetic.

Sorry to hear that Zim, It wasn't me that beat you out this year, Wasn't going to work out for me this year. Next year It may be me cashing in my 19 elk points. I think when the elk points are gone I'm done in Oregon. Like I told a friend earlier today when he told me he quit applying in Oregon years ago after he drew sheep, quitting applying in Oregon probably didn't affect his draw odds.

also sorry Zim. There are so few tags in the top units if someone jumps in from the points pool or across units because the year fits them it can really mess with the draw. I went points only this year because I thought I was going to draw Colorado muzzy tag. That didn't happen but Utah instead. Just never know. Just got to keep playing the game.

When I eventually do draw the Oregon elk tag I will be done with the State. Maybe I should be done with Utah as well. Got a few deer points and a few more sheep points, but the odds on sheep are lottery and the deer wait could be decades.

Wow Zim........bummer. Well, I just decided I'm going to re-think my 17 elk points for next year.

I'd rather use them on a "sub-Wen,Emi,WW" unit than to die with them!

Again, sorry Zim & good luck the rest of you'all.

Ya had I known all the political bait-n-switching that was to come, no way in hell I'd ever started applying in either Oregon nor Utah back in 1996 or whatever. Just not worth it at all.

Everyone wants Obamarama free money. No work ethic.

Zim, I don't regret starting the points race way back then. I did get a great tag this year from utah and may get a kaibab mule deer tag from arizona. I've had other great tags in past years. Now I'm just burning points as fast as possible and still have good hunts. Then general hunt and low point hunts from here on. Life is short and I'm getting old.

The real bummer is starting over or young guys just starting.

Draw reports are up. Zim, looks like one person with 19 jumped in to Emily bow draw to ace you and two other app's with 17.

On wenaha, there were three with 19, one drew. Then 5 with 18 pp's.

There were also 22 with 19 and above in the point saver pool. Unless your sitting on 21 or 22 pp's for next year it could be a long wait yet.

You're right there I wouldn't give up now. but I wouldn't blame you if you did.

If you've really had enough apply with a partner in one of the central units of the state and have a quality hunt with your points. you'd draw most of them.

Stay Thirsty My Friends

Don't give up! I got super lucky and drew one of the 25% tags with only 6 points, and I will tell you everything I know when you draw. I had the tag in 2010 and hunted it with friends in 07, and 09. It is obviously better then most hunts in Oregon, and I think you would be disappointed you did not stick it out :(

Sorry to hear that Zim - I was hoping you would finally draw the tag this year!

After 19 years, I would definitely stay the course and get your elk tag out of Oregon before I bailed...

The guaranteed outfitter tags in these premium units are a total joke. Why the hell subsidize the business of such a select few at the expense of guys paying their dues (literally) trying to draw a tag.

I feel for you and hope you can stick it out and eventually have a great hunt.
