Wasatch Bull Approach Strategy

Needless to say the bulls have been lethargic so far on the archery hunt. We have finally found a 350 class bull that seems to be pretty hot in an area where no one else is hunting. The bull is bugling and has about 15 cows. We saw him chasing smaller bulls (rag horns) away from his cows. The bull is in a place where we should be able to get the wind fight without a lot of problems.
We think we should go after this bull in an aggressive manner - get in as close as possible, do a few cow calls and let out a big nasty bugle to get him to come in - what ideas do you Elk hunters have ?????

I also have a wasatch tag. Last year I was hunting cows and ran accross a bugaling bull. I was the one calling as my friend was the shooter. The bull just kept running from us until I got really close to him. I would say about 80 yards. I let out a bugle and he ran to my friend. He was alone so my buddy did not get a shot at one of his pride posessions, but it was cool. Just my 2 cents.

sure thats a good 1. how far do you think he will run them cows before he comes to fight? lol dont do it. get in close but have someone stay back 80 or so yrs. some soft cow calls then they stayback guy does a few grunts. all it will take the first time.

The LAST thing i would do in that situation is get in close and let out a bugle!!!

If he's hot and working cows, get in there tight and work some estrus cow calls.
Keep his mind on the ladies so he'll get stupid and make the right mistake for you to get your shot!!

Use you bugles as a locator only!!

Bulls that have cows do NOT want a fight, they will continue to bugle at you, all while he is pushing his cows AWAY from you (the challenging bull).

Good luck, sounds fun!!

Can't add anymore to what was said, You do it that way and you should get a chance at him.

Thanks for the responses ! It's way cool that you guys are willing to share your thoughts. We will report what happens.

hikenhunt-

Another little "tactic" i have used very successfully while guiding (this may sound korny) is to be one with the animal.
In other words, turn yourself into a cow elk, or better yet, sound like a multiple of cows........and hang on!!

Elk are very noisy animals by nature, and quite clumbsy in the woods. They trip over things, snap logs, kick logs, ect;ect.
They are also pretty vocal when they are relaxed.

In these situations, i try to act and sound just like they do.
Keeping the wind in your face, approach the herd by making a few noises, step on a few twigs yourself, but also make sure you are cow calling your way into them and keep them calm, but don't let them see you...only hear you.

If you try to approach in stealth mode and make even one mistake, your busted. Elk know by nature that when something is "sneaking" in on them, it's trying to eat them for dinner.
You come in semi noisy, and they think your JOINING them for dinner.....but do NOT bugle!!
The last thing you want your target bull to think is that he has a challenger and that there's a chance he could lose his hard earned cows to the "new guy in town".

I keep at least two different brands of cow calls in my hands when doing this technique, that way i sound like a small herd approaching. Don't come in TOO agressive, take your time, snap a few sticks, make a few cow calls and keep that herd relaxed.
Remember, do NOT let them actually see you and don't get in TOO close, their eye sight will kill you. Just get in close enough that you think you can sucker in your bull the rest of the way for your shot.

They are much like humans.....we could have the hottest wife in town, but when a new one comes along, we just GOTTA go see!! Lol

Good luck, we're all expecting pictures.
Sounds like you have found what your looking for, 350" is one hell of a bull.....now go get him!!! ;-)

Forget the call, if he's bugling get in as tight as you can without him knowing anything else is around. If he's working cows he's got a one track mind. Only cow call once you need another option. Sneak, wind and luck!!!!

There is one piece of info that most have overlooked and that is that this bull has been seen chasing smaller bulls of and away from the cows,IMO I would go in fairly close with a few cow calls to mask any noise beeing made while I would have a caller behind me blowing a bugle but only sounding like a satelite bull for him to come kick some arse on and then poke a hole in him, if you go in aggresive like others have said he might pack up his cows and go elswhere. Just my .2 cents

I dont know anything about the wasatch just ask slam. but here is my .2 bits if you pull that cow call out on this unit this early, you can kiss any chance at that bull good bye! after 90 bow hunters and who knows how many cow and spike hunters bleat at them for better than three weeks they know exactly what is up. They hear that hoochie mama and adios they head for mexico! your best bet is to be patient pattern them and work the wind. like slam said they dont give a hoot about noise just scent so as long they dont smell you. I could be wrong after all i know nothing of this unit ;-)

if he can get in like 80 yrs closer. and do a few cow calls. then you grunt up the hill like a weeker bull not big and ugly! he will think he has loose ladies and he will go to round them up before the bull on the ridge above sneaks in to steal a few for himself. i do this when i am hunting alone. i bugle into the draw from the ridge. if i get a hello i run like hell towards it not making mutch noise or as litle as i can. then set up quick and put out a few im ready hunny mews. i call it the 80 yrd dash. o spray in heat pee on the closest down wind tree from 2 feet up to about 7 ft it caries the scent better if he comes in on the crappy side. took a good point from 6 yrds this way. and he stood down wind forever his nose pushed tight to the scent post 6 yrds away. fell dead at 80 i full veiw.

Slam,
I can't believe you didn't tell this guy about your custom made hoove slippers you have. They sound real when tripping over the logs. You just have to be really careful though, that "Oh s*$t" after you trip is a dead giveaway!:D

It's always an adventure!!!
