just wondering what you think? I should have enough points to draw nov 5-11 hunt in area 55.Should i put in for 55 or wait a couple more years and put in for 61?How do the 2 units compare for trophy potential?

How about 55 or 44 late season?
How about one of the early Sept. hunts?

Maybe a more general question. If you had 11 points where would you burn them?

Don't count on 55 taking the same number of points this coming draw or even close to what it took last year. Its one of the premier draw units in the West now and the secret is out. From those I have talked to, everyone with stacks of points are looking to pull the trigger(literally). 61 will be easier to draw this year in my estimate.

So, do you think 55 is the best use of points in CO? I am sure the required points will go up due to a book that just came out talking about it so much.

They may have killed both in the gunnison basin but didn't the largest buck in colorado come out of unit 61 last year?????..........:)Gotta realize that unit 55 also has an OTC elk hunt at the same time, I would rather go where all the tags are limited. If your worried about trophy quality in 61 just ask anyone that spent some time in there....but again 55 is still a good trophy quality unit, just not my preference.

Sneakem,
Is 55 still OTC for elk? I thought it went to a draw for elk this year. That is the way it appears in the regs.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-09-05 AT 10:02AM (MST)[p]I'm sure your right (looking at last years again!!oops) have to look at the reg.'s, recall something about all tags having to be drawn this year, just another way to stiff you out of an apllication fee. Either way the qouta will still be extremely high (due to the herd being over the objective size by 40 or 60 thousand animals statewide as I recall) and everyone should draw 55 if that be the case....They just want more of your money so they (DOW) can have those nice new dodge pickups! I know the application fee is only $3 but take the amount of OTC tags last year and multiply by $3 and what do you think that comes to? Look also to the new bill that is trying to be passed HB1266(made it through the house 03-02-05). They're proposing raising the resident fee's (not sure about nonres), along with having to purchase habitat stamps to hunt public land, along with the mandatory funding of the Colorado Wildlife Management Public Education Advisory Council. Hunters have had the ability to check off and donate to this fund when we buy licenses. This bill makes it mandatory. I know its off the subject but I doubt that anyone has heard about it or very few anyhow.

Unit 55 did not go to an elk draw this year. There are still OTC bull tags available for the second and third rifle season. I just checked my regs book.

All kinds of errors in the comments 2 links up.
55 was discussed to go draw for elk but was veteoed.
55 and the rest of the Gunn basin is at objective
for elk pop. If you buy an OTC there is no $3 fee
unless you apply in the draw.$3 DOES NOT cover the
cost of the app fee.DOW LOSES MONEY on every refund
check they mail out.Several sources have told me
that it is over $10 to process and refund your
money. I am 100% sure on all of my comments.

Over $10 to process and refund each persons money??.. They better hire some new managers at the DOW if that's the case..Shouldn't take a rocket scientist to come up with a cheaper, more efficient way to handle things.

Do you have guide websites (that you know or recommend) for unit 55, 54 or 44?

Fossil Ridge Outfitters is in 55, Blue Creek Outfitters is in 61, they are both listed on the Colorado State Guide/Outfitter Page here on MM. Don't know any in 44. Good luck, Steve

LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-05 AT 09:23AM (MST)[p]Unit 54 was issued 65 buck tags in the general draw for the 3rd combined season and Unit 55 had 75 for the same season. That not very many tags for the size of that area, hence..........lots of bucks survive. The management plan has been in place for a few years now and the older age class is very solidly represented in the bucks from those units.

Unit 61 has some awesome deer and the 250 something muzz buck and the 210 gross typical archery buck from the last two years show that. Its quite evident to me that the better hunting in 61 is early when the animals are on top of the Uncompahgre and in gentler country that is much more easily accessed.

54 and 55 have rough and tough-to-access high country that the deer inhabit in archery and muzz and have open sagebrush and and broken country very condusive to the "spot and stalk hunter" for the later rifle hunts when the deer are damn near in their winter range. 61 has very rough and thick pinon juniper jungles and oakbrush canyons that the deer move down into in the later rifle seasons.

From a pure logistical sense for a person who doesn't live in the area and would be virtually going into the area blind, what unit and or units make more sense to apply for?

My dad cannot hike the hills like he used to and we have 8 points for deer. I was told that Unit 54 or 55 would be good for someone that cannot walk for days on end. Is this true??? My dad is really picky and does not care if he goes home empty handed. I want to go with him so we will be sending in together. Would 54, 55 or 61 be good for him. ATV's and horses are available without a problem. Thanks for the help.
