Will elk still be in the same areas in october as they are know? I was also wandering what brings elk into the rut? Any input is appreciated. Thanks John

One is the days start to get shorter, weather helps being cooler and what cycle the cows are on 21 days or 24 days but if you ask the pros it is the light of days are shorter.

The amount of daylight is what affects the rut. You will hear alot of people say that the weather has alot to do with it, but the rut will go on regardless of the weather. Weather changes (colder, snow, etc...) will only make the rut more visable to you and me, i.e. better hunting. As for your other question about the location of the animals: I think you need to be a little clearer as to "where the elk are now", if you are talking about low elevation valleys/medows -possibly, but if you are talking about above tree line - probably not. I am not an expert, just my my 2 cents. good luck.

You need to understand that Elk can move 20 miles in a day and not break a sweat. Depending on hunting pressure and weather, they may stay put until the snow gets deep and they will migrate down in no time at all. Elk actually do better in the cold than they do in the heat. so they will stay high as long as they can. If there is water, feed and people leave them alone.

If hunters come into their bedrooms and kick them out, They will be over the ridge and gone. They may sneek back after dark, they may just find a new drainage to hang out in. They may also become nocturnal. Bedding all day and only moving at night.

I've been on many a hunt where when we showed up Friday night bulls bugled all night. Saturday the hunt opened and we never heard another bull bugle for the rest of the hunt.

The area I hunt deer in, I rarely see elk in September or even the 1st week or two of Oct. But the last two weeks of Oct I will see 300-400 elk a day. Typically pushed in by hutners in the surrounding area, that won't get out of their trucks or hike very far away from them. We ride the horses in 10 miles and find where the animals have retreated to get away from pressure. If we get a good storm that dumps a couple of feet of snow, they will be gone by Nov 1st
