Nevada Unit 17

I have an open date to hunt in October 2005. Should I go opening week or wait for the rut? First time mule deer hunting. Will be packing in on horseback with local outfitter for 7-days. Any advice appreciated. Shooting a FN Mauser .270 Weatherby 6x Leo.

Wait for the last week, especially with the season going to Nov. 6!

Did you draw a guide tag or are you just optimistic?

Which outfitter? I assume you talking about area 171-173? I would agree with Cosa on the last week but this year the season in that unit runs Oct 8 - 30 so I wouldn't expect too much rut activity that early. Besides, there are no deer in that area. Maybe with some luck, I'll see you there. ;-)

My mistake, I guess I assumed all the units that were not "Early" went to Nov 6.

Yeah, I think it's a drag on that area. Nov 6 would be much better.

Yep drew the tag! I'll be hunting with Jim Stahl. Headed out of Barley Creek Area.
So the last week of october would be the best pick. I'll have to bring me some luck along. Hell this cancer hadn't killed me yet, I'll make this muley hunt a good one.
Prolly will be my last anyway. Great way to go out, hunting that is. Safe shooting!

Barley Creek area? If I'm not mistaken Barley Creek is in area 16. Either way, I would look at the last week. I'm sure Stahl will give you a good hunt. I know a guy that has done some guiding for him. Hope it goes well. Keep us posted.

If you don't mind my asking, what kind of cancer? Sorry for prying but you can't make an ominous statement like that and not peak my interest.

No problem. Its a small tumor in the neck area. Before I start any radiation or chemotherapy and cisplatin or have any surgery to remove the problem and have a chance for it to spread, I will take my chances to make this quest for a muley. Best Regards!
