Wasatch Extended Elk Hunt

I started a firestorm of a thread last week with my son's troubles of getting his Youth Elk Hunt tag pulled. He turns 12 on 11/4 and the DWR let him keep his rifle Deer tag so he can participate on the Wasatch Extended Deer Hunt. Living in Draper this will afford us plenty of nightly adventures on the Wasatch.

My question is this. Is it worth me spending $45 on and Archery Elk tag for him to chase the wapiti on the extended after 11/4? He is an elk freak and is begging me to buy him the tag but I'm not sure it's worth the effort? Help me out. What would you do?

That is a hard hunt for a 12 year old. Snow, cold, not a ton of elk, with a bow???
I think you may turn him away from hunting with an experience like that.

ive been hunting the extended for ever. thats a tuff call with a young kid. hope someone will assist this kid and his dad he deserves it after being duped.

That's my gut reaction too. I am more inclined to have him chase some deer on the face of the Wasatch, but if someone knows something I don't about the Elk that time of year and is willing to share I would be grateful. The latest I have chased elk is the rifle hunt in October.

Wapitifever...chasing deer would be a blast for him along the front. You have some good spots to hit right above your house and could get into some fun rutting bucks. As far as elk- there are some elk that will trickle down onto the mountains above Draper but usually not till way late and they will still be high on the mountain- Lone Peak is a BIG hill. That being said- my buddy was mt. biking along the upper Draper road near the top and had a cow and calf run in front of him crossing the road. This was 2 weeks ago. Maybe the fire brought some down lower than normal? Good luck with your decision. Couldn't he hunt now if you got him an elk tag?

I just figured out...his birthday is 11/4. You would still have over a month to hunt. You could have some good fun if he is a tough 12 year old.
