LAST EDITED ON Sep-10-08 AT 10:04AM (MST)[p]Here is my bull. We went hunting first and Jean was able to join us the later that night after I killed my elk. We rode in 6 miles on mountain bikes to get to the hunting area. This herd bull was calling and I snuck in on him. He called once and the bull came in to check me out and I shot him at 42 yards. The bull was down in 10 seconds. The next day, Jean and I heard a bull so we got close and called the 5x6 bull in to 16 yards. This is Jean's first season bow hunting. Jean had him at full draw, but it was thick timber and he wouldn't give her a clear shot. After a couple seconds he winded us and ran off. It was a great hunt.

A mountain bike hunter! COOL! That's something you don't see every day. Nice elk (and nice bike too). Congrats!

Great bull - I also like the mode of transportation. Is Oregon getting better bulls or are you guys just keeping quiet about the quality up there. congrats.

The picture looks funny to me. I mean, the elk is so big, not just the rack but the entire elk. I don't believe that the pic has been photoshopped, BUT, why does it appear to be so much larger than you? Was it the way the picture was taken, or are you just a small person, or was the elk abnormally large? Just curious and please don't take offense to the question, the elk just looks much bigger than all other elk I have seen pics of.

GREAT bull, huge body!! I noticed the one reply mentions you are in Oregon. I just started bow hunting a couple of years ago and am headed to Hells Canyon area on the 18th for a week long pack-in trip. I have rifle hunted Chesnimnus for years and the backgroud in the last two pics sure looks familiar. What unit were you in if you don't mind me asking. Also, you mentioned the bulls were calling. If you were in the Hells Canyon area, how hot were the bulls and in your opinion do you think they will still be rutting hard the week of the 22nd based on what you saw. Don't mean to pry but I am just an anxious inexperienced bow hunter looking forward to my first real pack in trip during the rut. Again, congrats on your success, hope I can only be so lucky.

Desertflinger...that is an awesome bull. I love the whale tails. I too have hunted off a Mt. Bike before. You get some funny looks from others as you are passing by with a huge pack on your back.

Very nice bull. Huge body. I can see you are just tickled pink with your prize. Nothing beats an archery hunt out on your own.

I tried the bicycle thing a couple of years ago. I had trouble with the backpack. Felt like it was pushing me over all the time. Been looking for alternatives and found a cool single track trailer that can haul 70 lbs. Now I'm just waiting to find the right area then I will make the purchase and give it a try.

So congratulations on a great hunt and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the reply...... I believe HUGE might be an accurate description. Im not certain if it is the angle or what, but that may be the largest elk body I have ever seen - looks as though he would have went close to 1,000 pounds.

Holy cow...if my math is correct that is 72 miles!! Still well worth it though. My problem when we took bikes was trying to ride in the dark with a headlamp on a severly rutted up closed road in the mud. I think we only crashed 6 times. It would have been much more fun with meat on our backs!!!

Congratulations, what a nice bull, and a nice hunting companion.

Is that the exit or entrance wound on its right side. How was he standing when you shot him.

Nice job on a hard-earned bull.

Outstanding!!!! Congratulations on an outstanding bull!!!

As others have mentioned, it's also cool to get in there in a 'not so conventional' way! ;-) Also, big kudos on the photography! Those are some great pics of a great bull, and one OBVIOUSLY happy hunter!

Thanks for sharing!

Great bull and a great adventure! I think it is cool that you rode in on bikes too! One suggestion for next time though - two words - PACK MULE! Six mile hike in, six mile out the mule does all the work! LOL

Congrats! Seriously nice bull - love the swords!

Great bull and a great shot it looks like. Ya gotta love it. Congratulations. Mark.

Congrats on a sweet bull. That is really cool that you were able to hunt with your wife. Great experience i'm sure.

Congrats! Curious what broadhead and I suppose he was quartering towards you, heart shot? That sure is a big body on him!

God Bless America and save us from B.O.

He was quartering slightly towards me. The arrow hit about 5" to the right were I was aiming.I blame it on adrenaline! I hit the inside edge of the leg bone and it went across the top of the heart.

Great, Great bull and congrats to you. What a feeling to get him. You deserve all the rewards and congrats you receive.

Wow, what a pig. Congrats on an awesome bull. I'll bet when you were taking the last load out, you were not feeling so bad that your wife didn't get the one she nearly had a chance at. Way to go.

That has got to be one of the largest elk bodies I have ever seen nice going

horns aren't to bad either

Archery is a year round commitment!!

That's what it's all about right there. DIY hunt, great bull, great memories, doing it with family and friends, putting in the effort and then getting a sweet reward. Congrats on a great bull and a great hunt.

Congrats on one beautiful elk. It's good to see that all the effort that you put into the hunt was worth it. I have trouble riding my bike without a pack on.

Love the mountain bike. You inspired me, depending on how much snow we get in my unit this year I may be packing out animals on my snowboard.

Great job; that is one beautiful cape on that bull!!

What a great trophy. You have about convinced me to take a mountain bike on my bear hunt next year.
