Fat Lady Singing.....

Boy, sure seems like it's been a quiet year so far for Utah's archery elk hunters. I figured that it'd be a year for the record books for sure.

What do you think is going on? I know the rut has been really weak so far in my little area of the Wasatch. There is more feed than I have ever seen. Maybe the elk are just spread out over a lot more country.

Prism you and i are both from hever so i expect we hunt the same areas. here is my take on the year, between the full moon, early hunt and the abundance of feed and water, its spread the elk out messed up usual patterns, and pretty much screwed the bow hunters. Ive been out a lot and as im scoutin it pretty rediculous how thick and tall the growth is. great cover and no need to move for water or feed means tough hunting.
im starting to see one of the strongest ruts ever, had probably fifty bulls screaming in two canyons last night something ive never experienced and it was all over 8 cows. Im not joking on that number i saw 27 of them including 17 on one face. The others i just heard never showed and those were the bigger bulls.

I hear ya. I've NEVER seen so much vegetation this late in the year.

You must have an area with some hot cows. I've been out every morning and evening this week and rutting has been pretty spotty.

Saw 4 bulls chillin together 2 nights ago. Maybe gay? :)

Did see a big bull this am that was hot and bothered, but the mountain was pretty silent by 7:30.

I received a phone call from some very excited MM member this morning. He called from his cell and got blood all over his new phone from his fresh bow killed 6x6 bull, he had me almost excited as he was......pix and story pending, he's busy packing out as i write this.

WAY TO GO ONEDRYBOOT!! :7

Wasatch huting was tough for sure...another MM member, VELVETRUSH finally put a bull on the ground last night after hunting hard for something like 18 days. He's got the total tally and I'll leave the story and pics up to him. Nice work VR!

You did damn good whipnot!!

onedryboot just sent me a text pix of his bull, he's gorgeous!!
He also downplayed him on the phone at the killsite!
Hopefully he'll post pix tonight or tomorrow.

Glad to hear this. Ive been wondering how his hunt has been going. Ive been tempted to call him, but knowing my luck I'd call him and his "ITS RAINING MEN" ringtone would scare all the elk away!! :)

Hopefully he kills a good one tonight!!!

I am also hoping browtine is dragging a big stinky off the mountain? We are down to the last couple of hours. My friend on Dutton is still not giving up!!!! Good luck Cc!!!!!!

Where I was hunting on Monroe, the rutting activity on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday was decidedly stronger than on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. In fact, we heard NO bugling around our camp at night on Thursday or Friday. By the time we'd left camp this morning at 8:45, we'd yet to hear our first rifle shot, though I did see about 30 quads drive past our camp.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-14-08 AT 08:20AM (MST)[p]Ca, Great post by the way. I read that monster and it was great to "live" it with you. I ate a bowl of tag soup as well. It certainly wasn't for lack of bulls or opportunity. Thanks for everyone in this thread who offered help and cared about my hunt. It was AWESOME with no regrets!

And Tuff, your just ghey :)

Brandon,

Glad you had a good good hunt. It's been a weird year for sure.

Sounds like lots of bulls have lived to fight another day.

Brandon,

Sorry to hear it did not work out. I am sure you left nothing on the table and that is what matters. You still have some awesome bucks to look at until next time!:)
