Looking at trying to draw a permit in Nevada on the south, southeast part of the state. I would really like to hunt somewhere you actually see bucks and have a legitamite chance for a 24-28" buck. Considering unit 231. Anyone have any information on what I could expect or a unit around there to looks towards? Thanks for your help!

Here's the skinny on that unit, odds of drawing: slim to none, odds of finding any type of deer without a guide or major scouting time: slim to none, odds of it being a shooter if you do find it: good. This unit holds some great deer but extrermemly few deer overall. You would have to spent a lot of time and hunt your a$$ off to find em in this unit.

I'm thinkin that the "slim to none quote" applies to most of the state now dosen't it? Oh wait that's for finding a buck over 26 not just drawing a tag, hell ya you can find a buck over 26 easy in any area gettin the tag is where you got to play the odds and if you want that apply for 10 early hell that is a dandy area then you have the option of a chitty mornin hunt then take your pole and fish Ruby Lake it's about as messed up as the mulie hunt, better just stay in camp and drink beer! JMO!...Greg

Straightshooter,
I'd be interested to know what you consider extremely few deer. I've hunted 231 several times and have always seen plenty of deer on both the rifle and muzz hunts. In my experience, it's not hard to see bucks in the mid 20" range. You're right that the tag is the real prize especially for the nonres.

Get off your @ss and hunt a little bit and you will easily see a buck over 26"s in most any unit north of vegas in Nevada.

I'd say that you'd find a 26" buck in a lot of units, you just need to spend some quality time scouting.

hell I can go out any day opf the week and find a 25-30" buck in any northern region, give me a shout I will show ya

Settle down guys. I'm just trying to give the guy a little heads up on the unit without spilling the beans for everyone on the web to see.

Cass- I don't know what you consider to be a lot of bucks, but I only see a handful at a time out in that country. I do spend a lot of time in and around that unit trapping all winter long so I think I have a pretty good idea of whats going on.

jaybob,
How many points have you going towards a hunt down there? If none, then you better start buying them.

Brian

Makes sense you don't see as many in the winter. Most of the deer winter further south in 24. I know lots of So. NV hunters that only put in for areas 23 and 24 which means you gotta have plenty of points to draw.

It's funny
Because every time I make a trip up to area 22 - 23 - 11, Even if it's for a weekend getaway I come across bucks of that caliber nearly every day im up there. I went through a stant of 1 weekend where Me / my dad came across 11 bucks over 27"s wide on 1 weekend. There up there, there is just a lot of things that you need to put into perspective about the land. If it's dry the bucks will be hanging about 1 - 1 1/2 mile from the nearest water hole. If there is water in every canyon the bucks are going to be sparatic. They are gonna mingle in their bachelor groups and go from water hole to water hole daily. Chances are with this up coming year, if you find a big buck at water he won't be there the next day. With as much water and feed that is going to be up in that region, my guess is the deer are going to hang high and eat the good feed thats going to be on top for a change and move out of the high timber just before sunlight fades. I don't know yet, The last time I was up there I was pushing snow with the front bumper of my truck.
I do know, that if the rain continues like it has in utah, the feed and the deer are going to be great this upcoming season. Look at the gorge.

scouting trips all summer long to find some footage of some nice bucks / bulls for this hunting season. I'll be in Cent. Nevada / S. Utah almost every weekend from june 20th - november.
