Last night on the Manti.

I was up hunting last night on the manti for the last night of the season and heard 5 or 6 different gun shots. All sounded like they were from high powered rifles or muzzle loaders.I was Just wondering if there were any other hunts going on in the area other than archery deer and elk?

The LE Elk hunt started this morning. But nothing going on last night, maybe someone making sure their rifle was on for this morning?

Yeah it was kind of wierd. One shot was on the same ridge I was on.Another shot was a ridge over from me and the last three shots were way far off to the south. The last three shots were withen 30 seconds of each other.

My guess is that since the LE rifle hunt started this morning, what you heard were last minute sighting-in shots. I would think that anyone who was going on what is defacto a once in a lifetime hunt would have had their gun tuned up before last night, but perhaps they just wanted to check the zero of their rifle.

One thing to consider before accusing anyone of hunting out of season, there are many many people up on the Manti and I think it unlikely that anyone would get away with poaching the day before the LE trophy elk hunt... just my .02.

All who wander are not lost.

Could it be frustrated bowhunters that decided not to eat tag soup on their once-in-a-lifetime archery hunt? The old "bowhunt with a rifle." I hope it was just people sighting in rifles or grouse hunters.

Sorry to hear about the rifle shots on you hunt. Having hunted the manti a lot over the last 10 years, I would say it was LE elk hunters "sighting in" their gun's. I have seen it with my own eyes several years while bowhunting. They shoot right down into the canyon for "long range practice". Not too cool but when they were confronted about it, they acted like I was annoying them. Too bad they screwed up a great opportunity on my Dad's LE archery hunt. I wish people would think before they "ride their wheeler up to a tank" or sight in their gun. Not too cool.

I live in the manti unit and the only thing that I know of that was open last night was the grouse hunt. it opened on the 8th. I was up there the night before, and was amazed that there were no camps whatsoever. I'm sure they started rolling in last night though. Hopefully the shots were just at grouse.

Could have been handicapped hunters, I know for general season deer they get to hunt 5 days before and 5 days after the hunt. I dont know how they do the limited entry tags but I think they get a 30 day extension.
