Arizona Bulls

This is a good year for antler growth. I just returned from unit *** unfortunately. A friend of mine and his son have archery tags there, he called and asked if i could come up and call for them for a couple days and that is all i had since I am preparing to move soon. But what a day opening day was. The bulls were screaming until at least 130 in the afternoon and in full sun chasing cows.
His son missed two different bulls that morning that I called in. There is a bull that alot of people including the big outftters, have been chasing there and he would make the new archery record. If they dont get him a rifle hunter may have a great chance at him if he is not pressured too much and moves to an area where he is not accessible. He is a great bull but the two others with him I believe are bigger in total points. We were not able to get a shot at them. Very tough for an archer here although it can be done given the right scenario unfolding.
A friend of mine has killed a bull that has been scored at 419 although I have no confirmed this with him since I just got home but my buddy I was hunting with called me and gave me the info, so it is just rumor right now I will confirm it today.
But from what i have seen the antlers are great even the smaller bulls look great, this year will be phenominal and I wish I had drawn a tag. Good luck to all of you.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-14-08 AT 04:00PM (MST)[p]There is nothing like hunting elk in arizona. I drew 9 last year and in my opinion is the best elk unit there is. Good luck to the hunters.

I drew 6B this year and have been up there all week. They are talking all night and until about 6:00am....then nothing. It's been frustrating because I've been calling early (only satelites and a 30"spike looking for a herd to hang out with) then spot and stalk the rest of the day.

I'm going up all week again and hope they kick in!

Any ideas why my unit is behind the curve?

Its not just your unit. I was up in 7w this weekend and it was good in the mornings til around 7:30 if we were lucky, and the afternoons were either hit or miss. Best of luck to you on your hunt!

Bugler I sent you a PM.

This year has been very strange. We have been on the hunt for the past five days and the bulls seem to be going crazy from about 2:45am to 6:00am and then nothing. It seems as soon as it gets even light enough to see, they are back in the trees. Very frustrating!

In unit 7w try the cedars there are allways god bulls behind Howard mesa towards the coxcombs. The area behind red lake there arew some state parcels peole dont know to much about.
Also from the pipe line off of 64 to a tank called schoolhouse off of 141 And the area off of CR141 untill it hits 74 all of the area to the north of there is normally really good. I hope this helps I have been hunting that area for well over 20 years I hope you dont mind mt 2 cents.
Good Luck
Tony

Amen to that! We're out again today for the week and I hope they start working with us! Spot and stalk on a herd of 40 pairs of eyes/ears is tough:)

My friend in fact did kill a 419 and 4/8 gross bull. He is not putting anything out as far as pics yet I guess but he did it. Good Job Phil!

Just got back from 5BS and they are not bugling much either. Satellite bulls are right with the mature bulls and cows so things have not kicked into 2nd gear yet. Lots of moisture this year has them spread out all over the unit. Cedars have a lot of elk because there is so much water out there this year.

I hunted this unit 3 years ago and my "hotspots" are not so good anymore.

Some people probably don't mind the info, but when you post it on the internet alot of people see it, so more then a few people will know about the state parcels now and other areas. Just might want to PM people about specific spots rather than posting them for everyone to see.
Just my 2 cents

Here is a good bull that one of my good friend's son, got this past weekend. Congrats to Eric!!

That's a Great bull!! I was out this last weekend checking out some hot spots and it seems like the rut is much Slower this year. Hopefully it picks up quick for the archery hunters.

Is that picture a unit 8 bull?
I saw one last saturday (13th) that looked a whole lot like that monster where I was helping a friend south of Williams.
