I have been viewing and enjoying this web site for the past several years without making comments. I am 62 yrs. old and have lived in the Southern Ohio hills along the Ohio River most of my life. I have killed several groundhogs, squirrels, grouse, turkeys, and deer throughout a lifetime of hunting here. I stopped Walleye and Northern Pike fishing in Northern Ontario, Canada a few years back when my fishing buddy quit.

I took a nice antelope in Wyoming?s Shirley basin in 2000 on a ?DIY? hunt with brother-in law but had no luck with muleys. I did hear several bull elk in the Medicine-Bow Routt National Forest and was hooked when a cow almost ran over brother-in-law. I have unsuccessfully ?DIY? goose hunted in Washington State once and ?DIY? elk hunted in Colorado three times. I traveled to Montana for a week without a tag four years ago as a tag along with wife?s nephew and his buddy. He and his buddy were unsuccessful but I had three nice bulls pass me and stop while I was holding the horses for them. I am somewhat familiar with Choteau, Ear Mountain area and less so with Whitefish area. I killed a cow elk on an outfitted elk hunt in Wyoming a couple of years ago east of the Teton?s and south of Yellowstone.

I have successfully drawn a Nonresident Montana Elk Combination License to elk, fish, and bird hunt from Oct 27-Nov 30. This will also be a loner ?DIY? trip with emphasis on elk, birds, and fishing respectively. I plan to use my 4x4 to get to trail heads then hike in and camp. Would hire outfitter to pack out elk if successful. Liked recent post of using mountain bike to get in and pack out elk but don't know how practical that is there. I do not know anyone who has drawn this type of tag and need advice. I would also be interested in picking up a hunting partner if chemistry was right and particulars could be worked out.

Any advice that you could give on:
Where to begin hunt
Pack out outfitters
Area attitudes on non-resident hunters
General pitfalls
And anything else related to this type of hunt would be greatly appreciated.

Am also posting this in Montana blog.

Thank you,
possum
