I killed a nice 6x6 on the Grouse Creek LE hunt...

I just wanted to thank all of the guys that emailed me with suggestions and advice... it really helped. I never would have thought that I would accomplish a life long goal of killing a big elk. I got the extended 30-day hunt for the disabled... saw a few nice bulls.. it was really exciting to be in the middle of all of them in a buggling war. Once I figured their habits on Sunday evening I was dropped off for a short 2 hour wait and shot the 6x6 at ten yards. It will probably be my last elk hunt but it was worth it.

I will try to post a picture in a day or two.

On the 30 day extension for disabled hunters were you hunting archery?, crossbow or drawlock? Are you allowed to shoot the elk with a rifle since the rifle season started on Sat? As usual it would take a Philadelphia lawer to figure out the rules. In other words did you have an le archery permit? did you shoot it with archery?
I just had a thought that grouse creek may not be in Utah. Does anyone know the rules in Utah for the 30 day disabled extension?

Way to go!!! Can't wait to see the pictures. I'm very happy for you and hope that it'not your last. Sounds like you have some great memories of this one.

Congrates Destiny,
I can't wait to see your Bull and hear the story behind it.

There's room for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed taters and gravy.

I hunted with a rifle... I don't have the strength to pull a bow.. it was a Limited Entry Rifle hunt. You have to have a Doctors note on the Utah DNR forms... you can pick them up at any regional wildlife office or have them mailed to you. The tag I drew was a ten day hunt.. Sept 13-23 but with the Disabled LE permit I could start hunting for 30-days... it really didn't matter what 30-days I chose... what the letter said I received from the DNR is my 30-days started when I got into the field.

I could hunt any 30-day period starting September 1st through October 13th. Grouse Creek is in Utah and its in the Northwest corner of the State.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-08 AT 11:08PM (MST)[p]I started to hunt early Saturday morning... I found the place to start hunting and found one small 2x2 bull and about 9 cows... watched them on private land and was waiting to see where they left and some crazy cow hunter drove to the top of a nearby knoll and scared them off and away from their normal exit from the green munchy munchy alfalfa field I was watching... First day a bust.

Sunday morning I arrive half an hour earlier and I'm smack dab in the middle of macho Bull chaos.. cows and calfs running all over and my bull and another are within 100 yards buggling up a storm and my sorry butt in the middle... very exciting but I still can't shoot until they move off the private property.. My Bull goes on one side of the canyon and the other on the opposite side... I get out my Primos elk call... been practicing for months driving the neigbors nuts and I'm truely having fun... all sorts of Bulls are answering and calling back...

I found a perfect ambush point that I could be left off at on BLM land and decided to back off and wait for return in the evening... I head back to camp and sleep most of the afternoon and I'm back at my ambush point at around 5:30 pm... Bulls are calling to each other throughout the canyon and I'm in heaven. One Bull is screaming and its getting rather close... I couldn't see him so I decided to move about twenty yards to my left and as I peeked through a tree I saw him in a clearing heading my way.

I saw something move about 30 yards to my left... a cow.. I thought I was busted but thanks to the King's Desert Shadow cammo outfit I was wearing... I froze and the silly cow was not spooked.. I had a small orange vest and hat but I had the Desert Shadow face mask, shirt, gloves and pants... couldn't afford a jacket due to the medical bills but I'm saving up... that stuff is good. Anyway.. the cow moved to some tree's about ten yards below me... I had a small 5 foot window I could see as a whole string of cows walked by... I saw horns and he went by too fast..

I'm in the wrong spot now so I get up and hobble with my cane ten yards back to my original ambush point and the Bull and I are stareing eye to eye at ten yards.. I shot center chest.. no meat ruined... he dropped like a rock... one shot one kill.

Then the work began. His horns are not perfect... kinda broken like me... I understand the horns can be repaired.. wish I could be. He was a scarred fighter just like me.

RE: The Picture

That is awesome! Very nice bull and a very inspiring story. You stuck with it and got it done. Congratulations.
Are you planning to have it mounted?

RE: The Picture

Congratulations! That's a great story, and I hope it isn't your last elk. They're a great animal to hunt, and I'm glad that your difficulties didn't stop you from getting to experience how much fun elk hunting can be.

RE: The Picture

Nice job Destiny! That is a great story. I like the bull like he his - I wouldn't change a thing about him. He is a great trophy! Congrats!

Broken tine or not that is a dandy. How many folks did it take to get him into the truck?

RE: The Picture

Very nice bull! A great reward at the end of a great hunt I'm sure! Congratulations! I am one for leaving the antlers as is! It shows character! Great job!

Two.... Me and my Dad.... Story gets better...

The story gets better...

After the Beast was down... 30 seconds later my dear old Dad came racing up with my little Toyota Tacoma truck... He had this theory... one shot and its down... or One and a follow up was to finish the Beast but a number of shots means I've missed and slinging lead like I do out of a MG. My little Toy truck can climb well and you can manuver between the cedars far better than a full sized Ford. We backed the truck right up to it but it was getting dark. We had a come-along from Harbor Freight... there were a few cuss words said on the Mountain under the full moonlight... it was too small and it was only rated for 1,200 pounds... it failed miserably, all we could get is the nose up on the tailgate.

At 10:00 pm Dad came up with a brilliant idea... we dragged it down to the ATV trail with my truck and he left me sitting in the dark with the Beast laying on the trail, a camp stool and a flashlight and a diet coke... He took my truck back to camp and loaded up a pair of ATV ramps... 45 minutes later he returned and we winched it up the ramps with the piece of crap come-along and some ratcheting tie downs... it still was not completely onto the truck so around 2:00 am we headed down the trail in the truck... tapped the brakes and it slid in enough to tie it down and back to camp.

At 3:00am we pulled the Beast down the ramps so it was elevated and I gutted it one handed... my left hand doesn't work so well and I am recovering from a broken arm from a bad fall. If you ever saw the scene from "Carrie" where she is covered from head to toe in blood... well that was me. Dad has a policy... you shoot it, you clean it. I did find the spent bullet... a Remington Sirroco 180gr. I was using a 30-06. Killed the heart.

Did I mention the temperature dropped to near freezing and he left me on the mountain without a coat ? Well... I finish it up and prop open the cavity to cool it off... I'm hosed off around 5:00 am and in bed only to be awaken by a local rancher at 7:00am to congratulate me. I am up by 8:00 am and decide as slow as I am at skinning, that the meat would spoil as the sun came up so we yank it up into the Toy truck with the Ford and we are off to the meat processing guy.

What did I learn... well... invest in a expensive quality come-along or a electric winch strong enough to pull at least 2,000 lbs. A small pack saw... no way... you need a two man meat saw. Take a cooler full of dry ice for hunting in warmer months to stuff into the Beast. Deer hunting is in 4 weeks... that will be easy.

RE: The Picture

Congrats on a big stinky! I have been waiting for the girls to start posting some damage!

Fix or not fix? Personal call. I tend to leave them alone, BUT, if you fix them you will not have to explain why they are broke every time? Considering these particular breaks, I would fix them.

Nicely done!

RE: Two.... Me and my Dad.... Story gets better...

Thanks for the story and the pic, your awesome! Sounds like it was a long night after the bull was down, but the memories will last a lifetime. Way to stick with it and get the job done. Your an inspiration!!

RE: The Picture
