Hi guys-I just purchased (on-line) and received today another .270 that was built in 1952. The rifle was advertised as 99% overall which it isn't. The bolt was not the same as pictured in the ad as it was reblued (found out after call to seller)and has a very shiney appearance. The seller indicates it is the original bolt and will send documentation to back it up. My QUESTION is, did any of these models come with a plastic buttplate? My other 1952 .270 that is within 300 in serial number has a metal buttplate. If anyone out there is a pre 64 expert and could render any opinion, I'd appreciate it greatly. I only have three days to make up my mind on the rifle. The rifle otherwise looks good but darn sure not 99%. I'd put it more in the 90-95% description. Thanks in advance. Jim

You really need a copy of "The Rifleman's Rifle" by Roger Rule. Perhaps your library may have a copy. I think it is like $150 or so on Amazon. Anyway, no plastic buttplates on a 52. I think perhaps the last year or so, (62 0r 63), may have had them. The bolt should be etched with the serial number, unless it was polished a lot (too much). Refinishing automatically is a big deduct on collectors value, even if expertly done. I can not see any refinished collectors gun getting a 90%. But it still could be a fine working gun.

Thank you Elmer. I am very close to sending it back as it was clearly mis-represented. I did find a metal butt plate on-line but the bolt really does bother me. Thanx again-Jim

my brother has a pre-64 in .270 that was won off of a punch board in a gin-mill(tavern) in wenatchee it too has a metal butt plate.

Remember, the steel plate is curved, with a notch on top. If it were cut off square, it would probabally mean a shortened stock, and too you would have to both grind down the buttplate and inlet it properly.

Here's the data. Note the plate is black. I talked to the gunsmith that blued the handle this AM. He said he just did it as a favor to the owner as the original had a purple tint, he said from silicon in the metal. You guys have been great. Thank again-Jim Dang-for some reason the pictures didn't come up. I guess if you do want to see them go to Auctionarm.com and look up the sale item number. Be sure you indicate its a closed auction in the last 30 days.

Description
Offered is pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 in .270 Winchester. It is serial number 2355xx and was made in 1952. It is in near perfect condition but has one repairable flaw. See photo. There is a ?? clean chip out of the wood at the toe of the stock. Probably the gun got dropped there. This should be a very, very simple repair for good stockmaker. Other than that, the blue is about 99% and the stock varnish is about the same with almost none but the very smallest handling marks. The bore is excellent. It is scoped with a classic Weaver K4 scope in Leupold 2 piece Adjusto-Mounts. A wonderful old ?Rifleman?s rifle? that, with very minor work, will be returned to perfect condition. Email me if you have any questions or want additional photos. Or call me at 603 878-3219 ? I always like to talk guns. Take a look at my website: antiquesandguns.com. There you can see many fine weapons. I also have many other rifles and shotguns not on the site. My inventory changes daily. (NOTE: I JUST GOT IN AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE CIVIL WAR HENRY REPEATING RIFLE ENGRAVED WITH THE AMERICAN EAGLE AND OTHER PATRIOTIC MOTIFS ? Call for details). Fine double barrel English and American shotguns and case hardened Marlin lever actions are my specialty. FFL or C&R required. $25 shipping and insurance to be paid by buyer. I accept cashier checks, money orders, or PayPal by credit card if you pay the 3% fee. Personal checks delay shipping 10 days. All items must be paid for within 7 days of auction close. Good luck and thanks for looking, Clive.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-20-05 AT 02:42PM (MST)[p]Jim, you'll love the rifle. I've got a 1957 in .30-06 M70 featherweight. An uncle who passed away had it glass bedded with an custom G&H monte carlos stock with a pachmayer recoil pad. I could care less about it not being 100% original--it shoots 3/4 inch with my reloads and also Fed Premium 165 gr. TBBs.

The action is smooth as silk. I had the factory trigger adjusted to my specs and I think it's every bit as good as a timney.

But, mine's finicky about what it shoots well...it sprays corelokt's and winchester powerpoints into 4 or 5 inch groups. I haven't heard of such ammo indigestion problems with the standard M70.

Enjoy~!

Thanks Bill-I sighted my other .270 in with Fed Premiums in the Barnes 130 XLC and it shot great. Then I went to the Safari Club show in Reno and bought some custom ammo with the same bullet, just hopped up where the muzzle velocity was 3,250. I couldn't get the rifle to shoot for beans. Was way discouraged. I have ordered a boxes of five to find a good load at this point. I do love the rifles. I may just take this one and put a synthetic glass bedded stock on it and see what happens.
