When the draw for the limited entry elk tags came out, Dad and I were not lucky enough to draw. June 30th 2008 I received a call from the division of wildlife. Someone had turned in a Pausagunt Elk tag. I was next up on the alternate list and received the call. This area of Utah is near Bryce Canyon National Park. There are a lot of red rock cliffs and the area is known for world class Mule Deer. I am here to tell you that if you wanted a 30? or better mule deer, this is the place to go.

I went down to the Pauns 3 different times scouting. During those trips I saw zero elk. I saw sign but nothing on the hoof. I was worried. You couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a monster mule deer, but elk were scarce. I called many locals asking a lot of questions. Everyone I talked to gave me tons of help and kept me from turning my tag back in.

3 weeks before the hunt my Dad received a call from the Utah Division of Wildlife, someone else had turned in a tag for the same unit and his name came up next. Dad was elated. Dad and I had a dream of hunting big elk together for many years. Dad is 67 years old and recently went through back surgery in May. His Doctor told him he needed a spine transplant because his is crumbling and completely worn out. A lifetime working a shovel will do that. Even though Dad is in pain and can't get around like he used to, he jumped at the chance to hunt a big elk.

Now the pressure was on. I have had the opportunity to plan some fun hunts. But the pressure really makes me freak out. I always worry that everyone has a good time. Some of my friends travel a long way to hunt together and I don't want it to be a waste of time and money. I made more calls. Studied maps. I was shooting 2 times a week and dragging Dad out. With gas prices at record levels, my VISA was smoking. I was determined to stack the deck in our favor as much as possible. How was I ever going to get Dad in a a bull. I hadn't seen a live elk down there yet. I had lots of nagging question about how this one was going to end......Pictues are Coming. I am one of those folks that has a hard time posting stuff like that. I will get Predator to give me a hand. She owes me since she slept in....

ZZZZZZ....I'm sorry, did you say something??? HEHE.

Did you say something about BIG DEER?

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

Let me start out by saying that I do know how to spell "Paunsagunt". My sleeve length is 34" and my inseam is 30" so sometimes I get it wrong. It's the caveman thing.

I thought I would tease some of you with photos of the area and some of the wildlife we ran into during the scouting trips down. So for some you that have never seen the area here we go....Hope it works.

Hopefully those will do the area some justice. On one of the scouting trips we fished a little in the East Fork of the Sevier river. After my buddie Roger fell in up to his chest. But that is a different story. I thought I would put in a photo of a trophy Rainbow I caught on a little #20 dry fly.

Lots of good times were had but like I said earlier, No elk. On Friday we spent the day scouting and showing Dad area's that I thought might pay off. We went up Kanab Creek to a rather large meadow. It looks wonderful.

I picked up my Nikons and took a peek at the far end of that meadow and saw a cow elk feeding along. I was in seventh heaven and so was Dad. She was alone and the rut was supposed to be in full swing (WHATEVER) so we decided to give that area a try on Saturday morning...........

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

18" wide and 4-0" deep and yes I fell in.....now get to the good part with all the aiming and banging and handshaking....

By chance were you guys in a grey crew cab dodge and a white chevy with for sale in the back window?

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

Friday night rolls around and we are excited for what tomorrow may bring. I am still worried about Dad and getting him where he needs to go. About 11:00 pm my wife Sherrie, Daughter Kristy, Son in law Tyler, Roger and MM favorite Predator (Lisa) show up. We make camp and get to bed. I told everyone that I would wake them at 5:00 am.

So 5:00 rolls around and I get everyone up except Predator. She groaned a groan that sounds something like a bull elk grunt. After all, she had been chasin ol stinky all over the Fish Lake. She was all tuckered out so I told her we would be back by lunch time.

We all jumped into the "Turkey Tracker", that what I call my new truck, and headed for Kanab Creek. We got there ok and started to walk in. I was expecting bugeling and the smell of elk and the silence and frost greeted our presence.

We got over the hill and it was getting light. Dad told me he was going to sit and watch a small meadow. I took Roger and Tyler and walked toward the meadow the cow had been feeding in. As we approached that side of the hill that led to the meadow, there was a pond that looked great. This meadow was almost waist high grass in places. I started to glass and saw a lone elk feeding. It was a bull. I can hear you all out there saying, no screeming, don't shoot. THe hunt is only 10 minutes old. I counted 6-points on the right. The days of scouting and seeing nothing came to mind. I set a goal for a 6-point. No a record book. Not even any kind of score. Never been into that kind of thing. I am known as the mighty 2-point killer for deer. You all know where this is going. BOOM, BOOM and the elk is down. We take a bunch of pictures and get busy.

Not the biggest bull on the mountain (As we will see) but to me a great bull that I will proudly display in my home. He had a messed up left main beam and 3 inch point growing out of the left main beam. Predator said she was going to upload some photos of that.

As we were headed back to camp we ran into 4 holy huge bucks next to the road. The 2 deer at the first of the post were captured on film by Predator. This one I caught...

We got back to camp and Predator started to cape out my bulls head. She is talented at that sort of thing. Before I continue you need to know a couple of things about Pred and I. We work together and seem to attract trouble. We both ahave a talent to getting injured and have an injury club which she is the president and I am the V.P. Just before this hunt I purchased a Piranta knife which has a replacable scalple blade. She was holding the knife in one hand while hanging onto an antler and asked me to grab the antler and hold the head back. Without looking I ran my hand across the back of the top of the scalple blade. HOLY $&%^ !!! That hurt. I'm bleeding like a stuck pig. Pred felt aweful and I told her that there are things we should never do together. Especially if knives are involved. I did manage to dislocated one of her fingers later......But I am getting ahead of myself.

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

LAST EDITED ON Sep-19-08 AT 08:39PM (MST)[p]Dave's bull was a freak! If there are any biologists out there, I'd like to know what causes this? We were guessing injury, but maybe a mutation?

Either way, Turk has himself a 3-horned elk that we named the Satan Bull.

I had a heckuva time figuring out how to cape this....

Oh, hey Turk, how's that open palm wound? *grin*

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

no injury. kill them club heads!!! ive seen around 10 differnt 3 horned bulls in as many yrs. 2 real neat ones. and the rest were like this 1.

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

Yeah, we were thinking he was real unusual until we got him to the taxidermist and lo and behold there was a shoulder mount with the same downturned pedicle.

You are saying it is not due to injury or that it is? We thought maybe he broke his skull, but you can see that there doesn't appear to be any thickening in the area as one would expect with a healed fracture....

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

That funky side has not changed much in the last couple of years, atleast I think it is the same bull. I found a shed that looks almost identicle to the funky one last spring. I dont really know how to post pics so Pm me if you would like me to e-mail you a pic.

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

saying his daddy is the same. we need those critters put down before they get big and pass it along. wyo has a crap load. some are very cool looking i think.

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

LAST EDITED ON Sep-21-08 AT 00:16AM (MST)[p]Do you think it has anything to do with the area, ie, I have seen more cactus bucks on the Pauns than anywhere else in the state.

Just figured it had to do with something they eat down there.

TURK, IF YOU DON'T FINISH THE STORY, I'M GONNA......see, he's not nearly as addicted to MM as he thinks he is, or he'd be checking in more than once a day!

*smack*!! Heeeeeere Turkrazeeeeee

OH, and Shed-PM sent.

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

So there we are at camp am I am bandaged up. It's a good thing I caught the scalple across the back of the tip or it may have been surgery.

Along came a fellow hunter with a true pig on the back of his trailer. By reading this you can probably guess I'm not an expert on guessing size. I have spent some time looking and have come close. I think this bull was in the 380 range. Pred can atest to it's size. He exchanged stories and congrats. I told him about Dads tag and asked if he had any ideas. He told us about some elk up a drainage that had been running with a bunch of cows.

A plan is born. I wrap up the ol hand and swear to stay away from you know who when sharp things are present. Off we go.

We start to work this small canyon and we see elk sign. Looks good so far. The wind, however, is killing us. It is one of those that swirls around and changes direction constantly. We atampted a few calls and the howling of the wind was all that answered.

We were on this flat top between two draws. It was about 150 yards across. We hadn't seen anything or heard anything so we thought we would regroup. It was getting late and would be dark by the time we reached the truck. We stayed on this flat top down the mountain. We cut a lone track that was the size of my hand. This was a BIG elk. Headed the same way we were. It veered off to the left and we went right. Pred was leading the way with Roger, myself, Tyler and Dad. When Pred got to the bottom of the hill she hit the dirt. She started waving wildly. I thought, great killer bees, no, that was when she was in Mexico. She let me know there was a shooter bull down the hill. I signaled to Dad to hurry. He got to the bottom of the hill and I watched as Pred pointed the bull out to Dad.

To this point I hadn't seen the bull. To many trees in the way. Dad shoots and the bull runs into a small opening. HOLY MOLY this was a nice bull. Dad fires and hits again. The bull runs up hill and I'm thinking NNNNNNOOOOOO!!!! The bull stops on top and Dad seals the deal.

Before this Dad and I had never chased branch antler bulls. We have both whacked several spikes and cows but not big bulls. For Dad, this will be a retirement hunt. He just can't do it anymore. He was worried how he was going to get it done and I told him that he just had to get it on the ground and we would take care of the rest. He did his part and we did our's. Thanks to Roger, Lisa (Predator), Tyler and of course our wives. For some reason the wives missed the hard part. Thanks to those on MM who gave sound advise. I will close with some pics of "Dad's Bull". It green scored 362.

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

YES!!! what a great hunt. thats a good looking bull. hey lisa. i showed your hunt pic,s to my 19 yr old daughter. she re named you. ninja girl. wife just said damn. lol

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

LOL!! You know what this means, right MJ? I'm gonna have to take a pic on the muzzy hunt showing the 'crane' position. HAAA!!

Listen, Turk, just because you slacked off when poor MJ was waiting with drooling lips to hear the story and I called you on it doesn't mean you have to bring up the killer bees.

Didn't Turk mention that he got me back? Yeah, he dropped a 110 pound cooler full of meat on my finger!!! Try to drive with a finger pointing the wrong way, yah!

Anyway, I just wanted to thank Turk's Dad and Turk's family for inviting me along. The first time I met Elder Turk, we hunted together at Strawberry. Strawberry to me is like Fish Lake is to AntlerRick-it's where I grew up and holds special memories. Well, I won't forget that first morning with Turk Sr, as we had the most insightful conversation. I recall the weather was just beautiful as we walked together in the tall brown grass.

I was really worried that evening on the Pauns. Turk Sr. was clearly suffering just from the morning's events, and we had so hoped this area would allow him an easy elk as elk hunts go. When that wind started swirling around, I knew we were toast. We decided as a group that going back to the truck would at least contain our scent and if we were really really lucky some elk would come through.

I definitely did not expect to see a lone bull with his head to the ground as if he was tracking us. And to this day I do not know what made me pause before the bottom and glass back the way we had come up, but I did and saw that bull. He was less than 100 yards away, too. Turk Sr. said later that I looked like I was trying to poop BB's by the way I was hopping up and down trying to get his attention.

Well, I just knew that wind was going to change again and we would be standing in that same elk dust I stood in on the Fish Lake.

I was so proud of the way Turk Sr. quietly made his way down that steep hill. Really impressed with his ice cold demeanor when he shot, because I was freaking out knowing that we had blown our 330 goal out of the water. Oh, and that little trick of cow calling after a shot. Oh yeah, that work's really well!

And it was a whole bunch of fun to see how excited he was when he got to that bull!! We all had tears in our eyes at that moment, I won't deny that.

Kudos to Turk for making his dad's dream come true in such a grand fashion, and thanks for letting me come along. I shall cherish this hunt above all others, it made my whole year.

OH, and before we forget. Does anyone know the name of the Premium LE tag hunter? We really owe him a huge thanks, and we'd like to do it proper. PM me or Turk if you can help us out with it.

Pred-OUUUUT!!

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

Great story! Great bulls for a father son duo. I cherish all my hunts, not because of the elk I kill, but due to the good friends and family I get the pleasure of hunting with! Congrats to all of you for putting together a successful hunt!

As for the Premuim tag holder, You were rewarded with a fine bull, I saw the pic's. What you did for this family of hunters was awesome! I hope you find the guy's name Lisa. He deserves a big thank you!

Kind of reminds me of another hunter who helped out an elderly gentleman on his bowhunt for FishLake LE elk. That hunter gave up a sure kill to let an older hunter fulfill his dreams. That hunter should be thanked too!!! It's been a great year for new friendships and great experiences.

Hopefully I can share a great pictorial story for all of you real soon!

Thanks again!

Chad

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

First off congrats on two great bulls that is awesome to share that father son experience on taking two great bulls i had that same experience on the paunsaugunt archery deer hunt this year with my dad as we both took good bucks on opening day and there is nothing better than sharing the experience with family and good friends. Second off me and my dad love the paunsaugunt so much that we were going to put in for archery elk there next year and the odds are not to tough and we have enough bonus points to have a good chance to draw hopefully. I was just curious if you would be willing to share any areas to hunt elk, i know where to hunt deer but i have never looked for the elk down there. Any advice would be helpful you can email me if you would rather that is if you wouldnt mind sharing any advice. My email is [email protected] Thanks

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

I sent you a PM and will send you an e-mail. Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Pauns08 congrats to you and your Dad on the archery hunt. I have some good contacts for you. Without help from others, it is doubtfull our hunt would have turned out as well as it did.

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

Congrats on a fun hunt and being able to share it with family and friends. Its great to see people willing to help each other out to accomplish a goal. Great job!!

RE: Paunsaugunt Double

Hey turk,
I was thinking about that gentleman ( I think his name was Brent ) that gave us the info on where we found your dads bull. I think it was a pay forward for what you did back with me on that antelope hunt in Wyoming. For those who dont know Turk, he's the kind of guy that would give you the shirt, guns and shells off his back to get a young person a good animal. I think this is the pay back for that 12 yr old in Wyoming that day....
it was a honor to be with you on the hunt and be a part of it thanks bro.

hey pred show me your.........
