I was wondering what everyone carried in their pack : a camera or camcorder? and why?
I want to buy either a digital camera (12x) or digital mini dv camcorder (25x).
I enjoy taking lots of pics of mule deer all times of the year from dawn until dusk. I would like to print some pics and post them on the web. Camcorders I can get with more optical zoom. They will also work well in very low light conditions. but their pics are not as good. I have tried a few of both & have taken them all back. I want to stay in $500.00 range. Any info would help! Thanks!
Below is pic of camera (Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ10) I have been looking at:

As far as a digital video camera goes I use a Canon ZR65 and to pull stills of it depending on how far out your zoomed, your photo will look grainy. My video camera has 18X zoom and when you zoom out to digital it goes way grainy. Also if you plan on making your own hunting DVD any mini DV camcorder is easy to down load your film to your computer.

This is pulled from my digital camcorder from 300 yards.

This is pulled from my camcorder at 100 yards. I think for $500 you would be better off investing your money in a nice digital camera. Im in the same situation. I made my own DVD this year from my camcorder and the quality is ok, but looking at buying the Canon XL1s for next year. Im told you can pull stills from this model and the quality is great. The price is $5000.00.

I have the digital rebel, and a mini DV recorder. I use the Rebel more than the DV by far. You can buy long or short lenses (SLR) and it does a pretty good job.

I have both....a FZ-20 and a Sony camcorder. You most defineteley need a tripod for zoom work with a handheld camcorder.....the shaking and movement kills the quality. My FZ is awesome, but would never bring it on a hunting trip packing out for multiple days. I bring a decent 3.2mp point and shoot digital for "dead animal" shots that is lightweight and if it gets wet for any reason I won't flip out that it was my FZ!

I've tried to enclose some pics from my FZ below....it was the xmas gift that keeps on giving!

I carry both also. Put the digital camera in a pocket so I can grab it incase I need a quick picture, and I put the camcorder in my backpack and take it out when I stop to rest, or when there is time..........like when I'm standing over a trophy! :)
If I had to chose one or the other, I would put my money into a good digital camera. You'll look back at that framed 8x10 picture on your desk more than you will the video. It's lighter and takes up less room too.
