Nuclear buck!

Some of you may have seen pics of these bucks taken by a government employee, but I have not seen them on MM. Thought I'd share.

Do you think radiation had anything to do with the antler growth? Probably not... the bucks are just not hunted on this land.

these photos were posted on MM at least a couple times last year. I don't know all the facts but I think the pictures were taken in Northern Utah.

If that's the case then I apologize. Hate it when people try to make more of something than is there, and others fall for it. The bucks are still beautiful, that's for sure! Thanks Brian!

Yep, thats Fritos! and he was illigally killed late last year by a local teenager, trying to convince people he took him on the extended archery wasatch front.

Yup, that is Fritos.

Unfortunately, that is the photoshop version of the photograph.
He was indeed quite wide but not THAT wide! If you look closely or enlarge the image, you can plainly see the "blocky" additions and bad editing the picture recieved.

The top buck is (was) from the Tooele Army Depot, the bottom one is from Alliant Tech in Magna.

Don't they have special hunts for these Military instilations? I know out here in California they provide special hunts that you must draw or be affiliated with DOD or enlisted or retired military. Don't you think it would only be logical to do everywhere else, for the deer population. My Dad works for a private contractor on a miliary base and when I go out there with him I always see some absolutely GIANT blacktails.

CASS, what the hell is a Tuella? Sounds like an imported lady of the night down in Vegas?

Here is Fritos.

Photo #1 is a photoshop touch-up. You can see next to his antler on the right where it has been modified and the brush branches don't line up.

Read in the newspaper today the punk kid got a $500 fine, has to pay $2000 in restitution and MAY loose hunting privleges for 14 years. I havn't heard but I hope they took his vechicle and weapon like they do in other cases.

Are we going to get a score on this guy? And other measurements? Can't believe the kid took it to the check station!

You're right Andy. I saw this buck in person at the ISE Show a few weeks ago and I just so happened to have a tape with me. I asked the DWR Officer if I could measure it and it was just a litte shy of 36 inches wide. My bet is that it's shrunk a bit since the buck was taken. What a great looking rack!

Too bad he had to go that way.

Too bad he had to go that way? It's the only way he would have gone or endend up like popeye, dead of old age.

Hmmmm... Let me think about that one CAjackasshntrWTF. Would it be better to POACH the buck ILLEGALLY at age 5 1/2 just as he's starting to show his potential or would it be better to have him around for another 4 or 5 years to see what he might really turn into???? Maybe allow other hunters and sportsman a chance to see a real mature buck now and then to fill their dreams with? Hmmmmm... Which would be better???

I also understand that the buck crossed into public land from time to time and he could have been harvested LEGALLY by an honest, law abiding citizen. Do you think that would have been better??? Too late now though. Like I said before, it's too bad he had to go that way.

It was awesome to hold a deer of that class. It's disgusting to think of him being poached, or even hunted for that matter. He didn't get the name Fritos by being elusive. Although, I would rather have had him been killed by a legal hunter than the way he was killed. He should have died from old age!

'It's all about the gut pile'

First of all dear are at their peak antler growing age from 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 after that they beguin to decrease in antler size, sceince is there to back that up. This deer was fully mature at his time of departure and has passed on his genes. And as you "understand" it the deer may have crossed onto public land or may have just been happy living on a military instilation without any hunting pressure. I just give the kid props for sneaking on, killing this giant with a BOW, and getting him out of there without getting caught.

Last I heard the idiot did get caught.
By his own stupidity nontheless!

If what I heard about this buck was right, then he was coined "Fritos" after his liking of Fritos brand snack chips that the military guys would feed him at close proximities. Guess you give props to anyone. You sure are easily amazed.

I've seen some DVDs for sale of some canned hunts. You might like those too. These deer on these videos come prancing to the sound of antlers being hit together...you should see how they really pick up speed towards you when you shake a bucket of corn!

Not trying to give you a hard time. Just ribbin ya a little. I just don't think you know all the facts to make up your mind completely.

So a guy premeditates a crime, one with significant risk of being caught. He carries it out. He gets caught. The deer he so daringly poaches, is somewhere between unconcerned with people and a pet.

He gets "props" from you.

I guess that pretty much frames neatly how to consider or weigh anything else you might have an opinion on.

I'll give him a hard time. If you are just trying to get us all going, well you did a good job with me! If you're serious, well, you need to have someone cut a hole near you navel so you can see where you're going! Pull your head out, moron! You respect the kid for poaching a living legend? I can't believe you said that!

What else can you teach us about Mule Deer?

'It's all about the gut pile'

My turn. CAjackassWTF, How about I break in your house, steal everything you own and not get caught. Do I get props for that? Do all the other poachers who don't get caught get double props from you? Is that how you Calboys operate? It's only poaching if you get caught. And your statement about him already passing on his genes. Maybe. If my memory serves me he was poached in mid Nov. The rut was not in full swing yet. What about him passing his genes next year and the year after that and the year after that and so on. You and that little poachin bastard punk get zero props.

Wow, you all certaintly like to make judgements and interpret things to a degree that puts the blame on someone. If you all recall I do not give him props for what he had done, "I just give the kid props for sneaking on, killing this giant with a BOW[and what I see now getting close must not have been too hard, Fritos], and getting him out of there without getting caught." And no, he did not get caught, he turned himself in essentially. Going to a check station with a deer of local legend propriety and having to take responsibility for your actions when called out on it is something he deserves. I see that I was flawed in my speech when I stated that he killed him, and he did do that in an area where hunting was prohibited. And there are many different facets of poaching, and I do not believe that DNR or Fish and Game would consider that poaching but illegal hunting.

The idiot took it in to get measured...he was caught. Regardless of how or when, he was caught breaking the law. Doesn't matter if he would have sold the antlers on EBAY, he would have been caught.

What I don't believe you understand also is that he didn't in any way sneak up on this buck! This buck was used to being around people. Getting within bow range of this buck was no giant feat.

I have to add...

Poaching is poaching!

When you take game illegally you are poaching. If you hunt out of season you are a poacher! If you hunt with someone else's tag you are a poacher! If you harvest without a proper tag you are a poacher! Go over the bag limit...yup you guessed it!

There are no different degrees to poaching. Not many "facets" to the act.

I thought I put that in my last post but it appears that I did not. I did not know that the guys out there fed the deer, and probably by hand or close to it. Even in area that people interact with deer, where I am from, the deer still do not become tame, you can't hand feed them, it sounds to me that this thing could have been in a zoo.

Chef take a look at the blacktail hunting fourm, look at the laytonville topic, and you will see what others think of poaching. Like all things in life things are only what you interpret them to be.

Responded to you in the blacktail thread.

The law is not to be "interpreted" to your liking.

BTW, the guys on that thread are not in any way condoning poaching. You have it all wrong buddy.

Welcome to the forum.

LAST EDITED ON May-11-05 AT 07:55PM (MST)[p]jack,

I can only presume you are from California?

Let me fill you in. The deer was on military property. He was viewed daily by those who worked there. One day he came up missing AFTER the hunting season. This raised suspicion. In the mean time, some "hunter" took very similiar horns to those of the military buck to the F&G to be measured. He insisted he shot the deer in the extended hunt area. The military property is 30 miles away as the crow flies. Now, the F&G do not struggle much with this case because every person from northwest Utah has seen him, everyone on hunting webites has seen him, and now an officer has him in front of his face after looking at him a million times on the internet. He puts 1 and 1 together by knowing the military buck is missing and the stupid bastard admits he was NOT hunting in the designated hunting area.

Poaching: Animals killed by people out of season and out of area.

Anyway you cut this the buck was poached. If this "hunter" is your idle then so be it. He is despised by many more who feel they have got a bad name from this imbecile. I must admit you are either trying to get people riled up, or you need new heros.

CAjackassWTF ,
You're kidding right ? Props to a poaching scumbag !!!
If you shoot an animal illegally you are a poacher . That's black and white , no grey area stupid . It doesn't matter if you're trespassing , hunting out of season , shooting after hours , shooting from a road or vehicle , using your fathers tag , your mothers tag or your sisters tag (tell her to quit calling me) you're a lowlife scumsucking POACHER !!!

And poachers are just below crack dealers and child-molesters on the food chain .

CAjackrabbitWCP,

A lot of us here practice good ethics in hunting.
Be it ethical shot placement or obeying F&G rules and regs,
and take a lot into consideration while enjoying
our hunting passions.

That is why you have ruffled our feathers so to speak.
Every year we hear about and talk about these magnificent bucks and bulls that someone has caught a glimpse os or taken a picture of. Again, every year we also hear of poachers taking multiple animals, and in this case Fritos. We see these poachers get a slap on the wrist by our legal system and that clearly pisses us off.

I don't want you to get upset and never come back here for conversation. You can learn a lot here as I have from many. I noticed you harvested a nice blacktail with your bow. Congratulations on that buck by the way! I also notice you looking quite young in your pictures. I had a feeling you were young from your posts. I want to genuinely welcome you to this forum and hope that you don't take your outlook on things elsewhere. Unlike you believe, it isn't the norm to disregard the rules and regs. That is how a true trophy is weighed, by harvesting it under the rules and on their natural turf. A 250 class mule deer doesn't say "hunter" if it is poached.

I'm rambling now but I think you get the picture.

well said I understand, and he's not my idle, so i got carried away by saying to give the kid props. I have hunting rights to a large ranch out here in CA and we get trespassers that illegally hunt our ranch every year. when we catch them they DO NOT come back, could you imagine if the MP's caught the kid, he'd be in a whole hell of a lot more trouble. i'm not promoting "poaching" or trespassing as some on here would assume. i see that this is a very sensitive subject that set's off many of you but you have to realize it's going to happen. don't get all up in my face for something that i deal with every year i never threw any punches at any one of you guys or singled any one of you out to criticize so i'd expect the same

ok big ben i'd better stop doing all that poaching i do then you might come and get me or hurt my sister who is always calling you

Alright CA, now that we've all given an internet spankin and sent you to your room with no supper I want to make sure that you understand why you were there. Do you remember????? That's right. You were trying to justify something that is unethical, wrong and illegal. Trying to make it look like it was ok or not quite so bad just because the offender didn't get caught. I hope this little time out helps you understand that doing something wrong or illegal is not good whether you end up getting caught or not. I actually didn't realize you were just a kid or I wouldn't have ripped on you so much earlier.

All joking aside I really do hope you stick around this place. You'll learn a lot of things that will help you in your upcoming hunting ventures. You might also pick up a pointer or two here and there that will help keep you out of trouble in the future. Poaching is not something that anyone should take lightly.

Take it easy man.
