LAST EDITED ON Sep-27-08 AT 07:21PM (MST)[p]Well,

We are back from our Wasatch Muzzy elk hunt. It has been the most mentally challenging hunt I have been on. Back in the beginning of the year when my wife Kristin drew this permit we were stoked! The opportunity for Kristin to kill her very 1st elk and to do it with a Muzzleloader would be awesome! Having hunted the Wasatch last year I had a pretty good idea on where to start! Through out the year we made trips scouting and looking for Mr. right! Here are a few of the up and comers we had come in.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-27-08 AT 07:21PM (MST)[p]The pics don't show up for me. I had to copy past the link into a new browser to be able to see them.

Couple of nice looking bulls. And man what a wallow.

So give us the rest of the story, has she got one. Or are you still hunting.

Never mind, I just went back into the post and they worked that time. Don't know what was going on.

The pressure was building as the rifle hunt started. The elk were being lazy and laying up till dark and going to bed really early in the AM. I had not found the better bulls yet....

As I searched for better bulls I was rewarded with more help than I deserve by many on this site. Great sportsmen and hunters were sharing great info with me. To each of you, Thank You. It is very much appreciated and I hope to repay you in the future. If I can ever help you, Let me know.

The weather has been hot and dry as has been discussed in many threads on this site. The rut was starting to pick up as the any weapon hunters were starting to wind down there hunts. By all reports, we should hit the rut perfectly! Isn't fall the coolest time of year?

cool pic,s!!!! your the first home looks like. are they still talking? my hunts next week. o and on with the story. lol ken

About 10 days before Kristin's hunt, our 10 year old son came down with a fever. It did not go away for days. We figured after a few days we had better take him in to get checked out. After the "normal" tests, other tests were ordered. The morning we were set out to leave, the Dr's called us and told us we had better bring him in for more tests and that it could not wait. Without any more detail, I will tell you that we were rocked back on our heals. The outcome of the tests had the potential to change our lives forever. Kristin's hunt became the furthest thing from our minds.

We made a decision to continue with our plan to hunt but only for the 1st 2 days of the season. Thursday afternoon we were to learn the results of the tests. We hoped and prayed and cried for the best of news, quietly preparing for the worst.

With the thought of our son and our awesome family who volunteered to watch our kids while we went hunting for a few days, we hit it hard on the opener. We hiked over 15 miles chasing herd bull after herd bull. The 1st bull we got on was over 50" wide but had fairly short tines. We got in to about 60 yards of him 2 times. But only fleeting glimpses as he pushed cows ahead of us.

After backing away from him, we hiked over a ridge and dropped into some heavy timber. There were 6-7 bulls screaming there guts out. We had the wind in our favor as we snuck in quietly trying to surprise a bull with 338 grains of lead!

We spotted a decent 5x6 across an opening and cow called him over to us. Kristin decided to pass on him as we had several better bulls out in front of us within striking distance. We closed the distance on the 3 largest bulls (all over 320) to 50 yards of the nearest one. Try as I might, I could not get one to stop in an opening for her to shoot through. They would stop before an opening, then after an opening. They were in a frenzy chasing each other around trying to prove who was the toughest. The pines were so thick we could not see more than 50 yards and in most places not more than 20! I finally decided to back out and try from another angle. As we approached I spotted cows bedded about 40 yards out. We slowly crept in for the kill. We got within 20 yards of the cows. I glassed and looked all around, I could not see the bull. Then, a cow picked me off trying to move, the bull stood up in the pines from 23 yards away. We had NO SHOT! He walked away from us faster than we could sneak on him. As we pursued the bull, we again drew in a satelite bull to a perfect shot. Again we passed. We backed out hoping to not bugger them up too badly for another attempt thursday am.

We got a decent report from the Dr's Thurday afternoon. He needs to have more tests done next Wednesday. Nothing has been ruled out yet but they said it is looking better as his white blood cell count continues to slowly improve. Pretty scary still. Kind of put a huge cloud over what could of been the hunt of a lifetime.

I do hope the news continues to get better for your son. 10 years old, about time to be taking or thinking of taking his first deer. Hopefully you'll have many years together, shared in the adventures afield.

good news. my son caught a virus bug when he was 14 mo. every night way to high a fever. every night hostpital from 10 or so till 3 or so. for week. didnt think the poor litle guy would make it becausle no doctor could figure it out. then an inturn said something to the dock about school and some thing that ended in purpa? 1 in 10,000000 get it. he just past hunters ed. sorry to side tracking your story. hope he gets well quick. ken

Thank you Joey,

Man, you go from dreams of hunting together forever to wondering about the future. Sure is a wicked reality check. He seems to be improving and as of today we are very optimistic.

Luckily for us, This hunt proved to be a distraction if for but a few hours each morning and evening we could partially distance ourselves from the worries and chase elk.

Wednesday evening we set out to a slightly different area. We found a good bull about an hour before dark but could not close the deal on him. Along the way we passed on a small 6x6 at 30 yards laying down. He had no idea we were ever there. Isn't it amazing how you can't sneak in on an elk when you want to kill him, but when he is "safe", they just lay there and not spook? The herd bull had too many cows!!

That night as we went to bed, knowing that the next morning may be our last hunt. We never spoke it out loud, but in our minds we both new if Kristin was to kill her 1st elk, it would need to be now.

Geez, Chad, our little circle is seeing it's share of scary stuff!!!

Looks like you took your new commitment toward hitting the shutter button in the field to heart; keep it coming, man, I'm loving what CA started!

Pred

Glad to hear your son is okay Ken. Family is the most important thing of all.

Yes Pred,

I love to take pictures, I just am barely getting to where I can take good enough ones to post! I am learning from some great Photographers. You are one of them. I too really liked Ca and your stories! I hope more will share the hunt with all of us!
How are ya these days anyhow? Hope your doing well! I may see ya in the city soon! I go back thursday.

Oh, where were we?

Thursday AM. It is colder, we are heading after a bull my brother Cory aka ElkunterUT, and Dad found during the archery hunt. A really nice bull. Pushing 350 really hard. We catch him out in a flat a tad too early to shoot. I push our luck and bump him into the timber too soon for the shot. What a knucklehead I am!? I typically hunt elk extremely aggressively. Some days it works well. Others, not so much!

We decide to not pursue him into the trees as we may get a chance at him that night if we get to stay and hunt.

We head of to the south of him into a deep canyon full of pines on the north facing slope. Their are 3 bulls bugling on the face. We approach from below and I mentally pick out the "biggest" sounding bull.

I attacked him with hyper cow calls with Cory and Dad following suit. We overwhelmed him. He was pacing back and forth in the timber desperate to come in but knowing he shouldn't. I turned back to Cory and Dad and told them to take some logs and start splashing in the stream while I hit him with a few more hyper cow calls. That threw him over the edge. We could hear him coming down the hillside as I set Kristin up about 20 yards from the most likely trail. I saw antlers almost at the same time. I whispered to her to shoot him behind the shoulder if he came out far enough, or right where the dark hair meets the light hair under his neck if he presented a head on shot.

As he stepped out, I saw he had a decent set of antlers and said take him! Click, the 209 primer did not fire. The bull went on High alert but did not take a step. Kristin kept her composure and re cocked the hammer, pulling the trigger a 2nd time. This time the gun roared and he went down like a ton of bricks! He was facing us head on and she shot him right in the center of the neck/chest. He stood up and fell 2-3 times and it was over! Wow! Were we excited! While we knew he was not one of the monsters we had scouted and even hunted, we had taken a very fine bull by my favorite way, bugling em in! The shot was 23 steps! I could not be more proud of my wife who hiked close to 20 miles in a day and a half. We flat out got after those elk! I really hope that those still hunting are finding good success. My friend killed a 330 bull wednesday night on the wasatch, and my other friends brother has missed 2 bulls over 320. I will try to get their permission to post the pic's when they get them on a PC. It has been a tough hunt so far but certainly not impossible. Good luck to all of you!

I need to take a minute and thank my friend Roger, Cory and Dad for all their help. They were there the whole hunt supporting us, and lifting our spirits the whole way. We could not have got it done with out them! Rogers horses helped out the backs too!

Kristin's 1st elk and 1st muzzleloader trophy!

Thanks man,

The hunt its self was awesome! It is almost more fun helping other people hunt! It is also a bit of a relief to have tagged her bull so we can be home with the kids right now! See ya around!

Best Wishes to your son. What an interesting life we live in... always teaching us, always learning. My prayers are with your family.

What an excellent experience with your wife in the field, along with her first bull. That is inspiration to take my wife along with me. It looks like you got a great honey hole.

Thanks for sharing.

Great story and pictures, congratulations,
wish my first bull would have been that big!

Sounds like the misfire sure made things exciting!

I hope you get some good news about your boy soon.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-08 AT 08:17AM (MST)[p]Awesome bull. Tell her congrats.

My wife drew a bull tag here in Idaho and it opens Oct 1. Hope she has as much fun as Kristin did.

Thanks Guy's,

I really enjoy hunting with my wife and family. She has now taken an archery mule deer, a rifle antelope and a muzzleloader elk. If you have not shared this passion we have with your better halves, you are missing out!

Just a quick update on my son, He is fever free for the 2nd day in a row. Things are looking a lot better! Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I know they help!

Chad

SS, that's a great story! I just clicked on your thread for the first time, and really enjoyed reading it. It's kinda strange, reading one of these from the other side. Now I have a better idea of what others were thinking when they read the one I did recently. I was sitting here thinking, 'come on, let us know what happened.'

How is your son? Stuff like he's going through brings us all back to remembering what is truly important, and that is family. You and Mrs. SS obviously had an awesome elk hunt, and I'm sure she's hooked after hunting rutting bulls, but as a parent, I know that his difficulties had to really concern both of you even while you were out chasing bulls.

Thanks for a great story and our thoughts will be with your son.

Way to go Chad!! It's nerve-wracking to be the 'guide' and not the shooter, huh! I've never seen TurKrazy as stressed out as he was about getting his Dad that dream bull, I can imagine how your head was messing with you.

Tell her I know how she feels, I think I must have gotten condensation in my smokepole this morning. I found out when it misfired on a BRUTE of a Wasatch buck......but I'm glad she got a second chance and made it count. 23 yards, WOW!

Lemme know where you are gonna be Thurs, I'll stop by.

Pred

Brew-haha, I knew that she would git-er-done. It is great to see the family involved, sorry to hear about your son, I hope that he recovers fully, and will grow up with the same passion fo huntin that you and your family posesses. Im glad to hear that they finally started heatin up. That still is a very nice bull- even though you were faced with adversity. Well I guess that it is of to the duck marsh you go now eh. congrats and god bless
Lambo

Thanks guy's, I appreciate all the kind words and thoughts!

Pred, Not sure where I will be yet, but I will let ya know! Sorry to hear your gun did not fire for ya! That really makes for a frustrating few minutes! Keep on that buck. I am sure he will be back!

Lambo, Off to the duck marshes is right! As soon as my son is cleared to do so, We are going to hunt ducks with him for the 1st time! Hopefully it is sooner than later!

Sounds like you had a great hunt and congrats to your wife. What a hunt and thanks for taking us along.

Chad:
Congrats again to you and your wife. Good to hear your son is improving. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Great to hear your wife sealed the deal on her hunt. I know exactly what you are saying about the happiness it can bring to assist someone with a hunt of a lifetime. Easily just as much joy as hunting your self.

THE ONLY bobcat THAT KNOWS ALOT OF YOU HAVE HAD THIS IMAGE IN YOUR PEA BRAIN BUT DUE TO POOR SHOOTING TACTICS I'M STILL KICKIN!!!

Thanks Bobcat! I told her good job like a million times! I am pretty proud of her! She hung in there through all the stress, not to mention the miles I hiked her across!

Just an update on my son. He was tested today once again and his blood work came back just below normal. What that means for us is he is okay! No more talk about scary diseases etc. Thank you to all of you had us in your thoughts and or prayers. We felt them all and are very appreciative. Have a great day!

Oh, and as for hunting. My friends brother killed a nice 300 class bull to finish of the 3 tags we had on the wasatch. When they get them on the computers, I will see if they will let me post them!

Congrats to you and your wife. That is awesome being able to share your passion of hunting with your wife, there really isnt too many around. Glad the kid is doing well. Good luck and keep on hunting!

Chad
Great Bull and a great story line ,the pictures are awesome.

I hope and pray your son will be O.K. as it sure is hard to enjoy hunting when you have a friend or family member that is ill.

Let me know how your son is and we will keep him in our thoughts and prayers.

Cogratulations again to you and your bride on a GREAT BULL.

Thanks Bull,

The last test came back with solid news that he okay. We were dealing with a virus that his body reacted weirdly to. Quite a scare but out of the woods thankfully. Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts! They definately helped.

As for the bull, we are pretty happy with him. Congrats on yours as well!
