Rut or no rut now?

For those hunters that have been out archery hunting, I was wondering what stage of the rut are the bulls in now? I usually archery hunt but couldn't get the time so I decided to rifle hunt instead. With fuel prices the way they are, it sure makes it hard to drive 400 miles just to see what the elk are up too. I don't really need to spend the time or the money to scout, after hunting 15 yrs in a certain area I know where the elk come and go; it's just the rut that I'm not really sure about this year.
If anyone wouldn't mind replying with information around the South slope area, I would surely appreciate it.

i bet it will be going still. probley here some the night before or early before the first kapow!!! then it will night only. you hunt anywhere by rock creek? ken

Don't know about your area but I got back this morning from Southern Colorado. The Elk were running pretty hard but I believe the peak of the rut is this week. The larger bulls were just starting to show the last couple of days. The bugling was phenomonal and lasted up to 10:30 in the mornings.

THe big bulls just seem to be getting started but I did have a big bull 2 weeks ago with a bunch of cows who was bugling and carrying on.

Where will you be hunting? I was out last week in UT and called in a number of bulls. The heat this week seems to have shut them down a bit... but they are in the peak of the rut right now IMO. Good luck!

Yes, close to the Rock Creek area. Pretty good hunting if you know the area and where the elk live.... Thanks!

Oh on the South slope..... It seems that for some reason the area I hunt the elk aren't really that vocal, however, because I know their habitat so well, it's fine with me if they don't make noise, then other hunters end up going other places when I have elk all around me.... Thanks for the info!

Well Rutnbuck, I snooze when I can, so they started to call me Snuzie. It's okay if they have a score throat, then others will leave, but I know they are still there. Seen them in the same sport for the past 5-10 yrs. the flu won't make them leave their homes.....LOL

Thanks! When I've hunted other areas and the rut was going strong, for some reason the elk in the South slope area seems to rut later then the rest of the State, which will be ideal for me this year. Beings I usually archery hunt and are out there from almost the beginning of Aug then I know what's going on, but sad to admit, this year I haven't had a minute to get out.
I really appreciate all the info you other hunters have given me?.
