Team MossBacks hunter killed him. I don't have any pics. Congrats to the hunter and guides. They worked damn hard.

OK, lets hear some official guesses on score! I say he is closer to 50 and 500 than 40 and 400....Any of you guys want to step up to the plate and take that bet!!??

And DOWN GOES FRAZIER!! DOWN GOES FRAZIER!!

Well, it took two months longer than I predicted. Congrats to Team Mossback and their hunter.

That poor bastage probably has not had a decent night's sleep in a couple months. He definitely is a legend now, eluding all the guides, guide wannabes, hunters, trail cams, and so on and so on. He's the Jesse James of the elk world. RIP Spidey

T264

By the way my guess is 465" gross.

FINALLY!!! WE MIGHT HAVE SOME PEACE! I HOPE HE PASSED ON SOME OF HIS GENES! YOU COULD SAY HE HAD A GOOD RUN! TONY YOUR OFF YOUR ROCKER 490 IS THE RIGHT SCORE! HA HA

BUGLEMN

As I predicted, his "days were numbered."

Congrats to whoever gets to look at Spidey everday on their wall.

Say it ain't so! This news makes me sad I really thought the bull was going to make it another year. I also didn't want Mossy to get him it would of been nice for an average joe to get er done. But if anyone deserves a bull like this it would be Mossback with all the time and effort they put into it. If its true congrats to everyone involved.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess 497 gross.

Dang,
I was hoping he made a run for the Frank Church Wilderness and wouldn't go back home until next June. That poor bugger.

The rumor I heard it was taken on the second weekend of the archery, but what do I know. There are so many rumors flying around about this bull and the Mossback crowd you never know what to believe. I also heard other "rumors", but this is not the place to post unverified information.

i too wanted to see an average joe get this bull but give it up to the mossback crew atleast spidey made them work for it and it seams they were up to the challenge congrats

He really had NO chance of living. Too many people looking for him non stop.
Congratulation to Mossback and his guides...oh also to the hunter that pulled the trigger.

You had to know that Moss was gonna get him, he is just too good at what he does, and has too many talented guides working for him. you can hate all you want, but he produces like nobody else in the US, period.

This just makes me appreciate these majestic animals even more. Pretty amazing that he made it this long!

I hope he had a chance to make lots of spidey nests so that we will see some of his offspring in the future.

Looks like this Denny guy has a pile of trophies with Mossback. What does this guy do for a living?

Hey Browtine, was this a governor's tag? Can he use it in any season with any weapon?

Congratulations to Doyle Moss and his group! Also, to Denny Austad who hunted for the better part of a month before taking this great bull. I was told about a week or so ago that Mr. Austad had missed the bull at 190 yards, so it's great that he got a second chance and made good on the opportunity. And, with this bull living for most of September, he certainly had the opportunity to pass along his genes, not to mention in previous years.

My guess as to his final score is 435-440.

Congrats to Denny and Doyle and the Team Mossback crew who obviously had a clearly defined game plan and stayed on it! Say what you will, because obviously not many people can muster an effort like this and spend two months chasing a ghost like Spidey, but this is a real lesson in focus and perseverance if you ask me. Way to go guys!

Congratulations to Denny and Mossback. Alot of people had the opportunity to hunt Spider and they got the job done.

My guess is 470+/- 1-1/8". Gross. Score, not the bull. Great bull and you can bet that stud-muffin covered a few gals this past month so no doubt some of those funky chromosomes are out there doing their thing!!!

So your saying the guesses were a tad low? DAMN!

It was amazing that bull eluded so many eyes for so long. With all the attention he was getting, many thought he would die very early in the hunt. To see him make it this long really shows how smart and solitary this bull was.
Well, so much for our late Monroe hunt and looking for Spidey...Have to find another pisscutter now!

Congrats Denny and Mossback..

500 inches of antler????? Holy bull!! What a toad. Can't wait to see a photo of the hard horned version of Spider. Congrats to the hunter.

I was off by 5/8"! (guessed 499 7/8). I just figured he'd come from the Selway-Bitteroot area. :) If those numbers are true...that is unbelievable!

There was a thread a while back that there were quite a few guys posting that they would rather kill a big 6 point, 370 or 380 bull instead of the freak horned SpiderBull. I wonder if that still holds true after the calculator stopped at 500"+ for Mr. Spidey!

T264

Told you he was closer to 500'!!!! Utah officially (well still unofficially) kicks every other states ARSE! Too bad I'll never draw a tag :(

Slow down 257Tony, he's not quite as big as Shipsy's 502, but ya'll are getting closer to our AZ giants ;)

Can't wait to see the pics!

Is this net or gross? For the record books, it has to be the net score, doesn't it?

Congratulations to Denny Austad and Team MossBack for all the hard work put into hunting this great legend. Photos will be posted soon so keep checking back.

That is what is says on the website, no pictures.
I think he is only 498! he he

Jeff

Score is gross. I haven't confirmed an un-offical net score. Its probably going to come in around the 480 mark though.

You mean the one that was turned down by B&C? What ever happened to that thing anyways?

Congrats!! to Denny and the Mossback guys way to go.That bull sure put up a fight.

Latest report is it will be real close to 500" straight out of Dennys mouth. Killed with a Barnes 168 gr TTSX. The Bull was about 15 miles from where he spent his Summer.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-30-08 AT 12:26PM (MST)[p]No kiddin! another money monster for team austadbacks.

"Shot with a 975 H&M wildcat chambered in a bullmouth with 145 twist and 899 grains of h337 double 0 buck shot, maxi power HD laser scope with stabalizer image capability up to 2 miles. Muzzle velocity of 4,339 miles a second blows the primer right out the back."

right out of dennys mouth!!! At least thats what i heard

I know one thing, I would much rather shoot a 498 bull on a DIY hunt than to be guided on a 500 bull.

Nice job on the hunt mossbacks, great bull, lets see the pictures soon though, we all want to see. I am just wondering how in the heck they are going to top this bull, the last 3 years have been unbelievable. Nice job, Lets see you guys out do that one next year.

How the heck does anyone have any idea of what this bull scores already? If they just killed him this morning and aren't off the mountain yet, how do people already have a score?

As unusual and unique as these antlers are, I'm not sure how anyone can know how to accurately measure them, especially in the field. I'm betting that when all is said and done, he won't score all that close to this rumor of 500 4/8.

How old do you guys think Spidey is .I personally think he is a fairly young bull ,4-5 years is my guess .

text from my son who is a guide (not for Moss) but is close friends with moss guide who was there--500 4/8 gross 480 net- new world record. Few if any, of the top record book bulls taken in Utah over the past several years have been taken by a utah resident. There will eventually be some changes to how long these governor tag holders can hunt. If the ones who have the money to do these kind of hunts want to pay for the entire DWR budget, then I guess we couldn't complain. But, every tom, ##### and harry resident hunter paid for the opportunity that this one particular hunter had to hunt this one particular bull for up to 4 straight months. It kind of puts into perspective the average hunters position on the totem pole of importance. I believe that a governors tag holder should only have 4 weeks. He can pick the weeks-- 4 consecutive or pick and choose a week at a time-- and he must declare the weeks he wants by the end of June. Sometimes it makes me feel a bit like the saying-- "he who has the money makes the rules"-- A more balanced approach for resident hunters would be better.
Congrats to the hunter and Mossback, I'm sure they worked hard--but I'm sure the $$ reward would be equally impressive.

CAelknuts,

As posted above, the score I gave was un-official. This is the score they (I got the score from Wayne, I think you know him) got while on the Mtn. Its going to change, but I seriously dount it will be to much different then the un-official score.

Don't be jealous of what others can do that doesn't directly affect you. You and everyone else among us had the same opportunity to bid on the tag that Mr. Austad was the winning bidder for. I saw congratulations to him, and thank you for being so generous in spending his money in a way that benefits wildlife for many more people and animals than would benefit without the generosity of him and people like him.

maybe I missed any sarcasm nebo...correct me if i'm wrong:

"text from my son who is a guide (not for Moss) but is close friends with moss guide who was there--500 4/8 gross 480 net- new world record"

How can it be net scored already? Isn't there a 60 or 90 day drying period?

UHH, you must be thinking of someone else. I did not kill a bull. I've already moved on past my Monroe hunt and am focusing on what to hunt next. Thinking about doing a coues deer and javelina hunt in southern Arizona with my son in January. We sent in our applications yesterday, so if we get drawn we'll probably do another thread on that hunt when we're down there in January. Next time, I'll try to take pictures as we go.

As for elk, now I'm focusing on Arizona (11 pts), Nevada (11 pts), Oregon (10 pts) and a few other states where I have max points like California and Wyoming, and where to apply in those states next year. Hoping to draw a great elk or deer tag again next season.

CA,
You are a legend in your own time now, so we will all be following whatever you write. Good luck with the AZ deer tags.
Nothing better than hunting with your son!

No sarcasm meant-- just that he is in touch with other guides who are friends. Just a green score-- but seems to be well within normal drying shrinkage. Most likely a world record. I am sure there are some very competent folks with Mossback who have put the measuring tape to this bull a dozen times already.

I respect all you positive guys opinions...but I still disagree with this style of hunting... If I was the hunter..I would NOT be proud of killing this bull...not with "?X?" number of guys helping me do it AND missing a 190 yard shot (unless the shot was with my longbow! :0))...

All it is...is a power play...I've got this much money and THIS is what I can do with it....

Anyhow...it will be neat to see spidey and his horns on tour someday...

"How the heck does anyone have any idea of what this bull scores already? If they just killed him this morning and aren't off the mountain yet, how do people already have a score?"

They had Mike Eastman glance at Spidey from a mile a way. That's how they got such an accurate score...

I'm with LowCountryElk, perseverance pays off. Congrats to the Mossback guides for staying out, not quitting and getting their hunter on that big ol' bruiser, despite all the flying mud that they had to dodge..

Wouold love to know if all the rumors the truth about the rumors of this bull. Being from Canada, blood tested high for steroids and talk about a DAN test to trace back to a farm in Canada. If these come to past Doyle should be shut down and lose his license for life! Just like the rumors of blocking off all the roads to the Bull he took out last year!

Congrats to the hunter and to team Mossback for all their hard work. I cant wait to see the hard horned pics of that beast!

I would not be so sure it was old Mossy who dropped off Spider from the ranch, your STATE DWR has way more to gain by having bulls like this than anyone. They will never conclude he was a ranch bull even of he was, way too much to loose for the State. Old Mossy makes the state lots of money with what he does to promote it. What will the Governor's tags auction for now? The state of Utah guys were disappointed at only getting 200,000 for the auction tag in 2007.

Utah has world record bulls 500 class running around. Anyone with half a brain needs to be applying and collecting points because Utahs bulls are getting bigger and bigger each year!

Its always about the almighty dollar.

LOL...LOL..are you retarded? If somebody was going to release this bull with the intent of hunting it, wouldn't they do it the day of the hunt instead of three or four months before the
hunt and let everybody else see it? Then give 40+ tag holders the same opportunity? Nice first post realhunter2.LOL

LAST EDITED ON Sep-30-08 AT 03:46PM (MST)[p]My guess is 500 3/8 and 480ish net, a new world record for sure!!!!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. A lot of hard work and time went into this bull and getting him on the ground. The great thing is that all the Monroe archery, rifle, muzzloader hunters along with the sportsman tag holder all had the chance to hunt him. Congrats to Clint for finding the bull 2 days ago and Denny for making the shot and putting 170k into Utah habitat conservation.
Green score 500 4/8, 377 on the frame. Will net around 485 when all said and done. Thanks again guys. Pics soon!!!!

Some Joe blow ran into him and got some video. He knew where the Moss camp was and ran over there to share the info. Doyle has set up his business about as good as it can get, but money got it done this time.

Shotgunjim, you hit the nail on the head! No elk can hide for ever with that many people looking for so long. Any clown with money can kill B%C animals, but that doesn't make them a hunter. My respect goes to Spidy for growing the tree on his head.

Them guys hunted their butt's off more than alot of guys on here. It's not like it was a hop out and shoot. The guides are just doing there job; one which I'm sure any of us would rather be doing than working. Great job guys!

i sure hope he got blasted before he spread those messed up ugly genes to anymore bulls!

congrats to the "shooter"

glad he is GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

live life one mule deer at a time.

You put that many guys in the field for that long eventually some one will stumble on him. No different than a fence hunt as far as I am concerned. I just do not buy all this money for the habitat BS. If the guy wanted to help out he should make the donation.

He payed over $170,000.00 for the tag which went to wildlife conservation in Utah....and he's a "KILLER" not a "HUNTER" for doing it?? Why because he has more money than the rest of us, that makes him a bad person and a killer?? Anyone "rich" is a killer instead of a hunter?? I seriously can't even comprehend some of your thought processes on here. How some people make it thru life is beyond me with such rediculous beliefs and opinions...every negative comment about this hunt and hunter are 100% B.S.!!!!
I GIVE A HUGE CONGRATS TO DENNY AND MOSSBACK FOR HARVESTING A NEW WORLD RECORD BULL IN UTAH!!

i believe some of those booing have used outfitters and "several" individuals to help them out with the harvest of giant animals of their own?????

Not sure what congrates are but I give my congrats to the guides and the hunter. Anyone down there with a tag could have killed this bull and the ones that did were team mossback - good for them.

I for one will enjoy watching the hunt on the mossback video.

Its odd, last year the gov tag hunter got ridiculed for taking too small of a bull, this year the tag holder gets ridiculed for taking too large of a bull. Damn to be so unfortunate!

To each his own. Everyone is has an opinion and that was mine. Lot's of great success stories here on MM of guys taking great bulls on there own with friends and family. They get my respect. Just not this guy. Sorry if you do not agree.

You know, its just a guess, but I doubt Mr. Austad gives a f&ck whether or not you respect him.

But I agree - to each his own.
