Splitting meat in a hunting party

I'm going on my first elk hunt in a couple of weeks and have a question about the accepted protocol for sharing meat with the rest of your hunting group. There are 5 of us going and 4 of us have cow tags while the 5th guy missed out on a muley tag. If we kill 1 or 2 elk what's the general rule of thumb for splitting the meat up? What if all four tag out? I was thinking the shooter keeps the tenderloins and backstraps or maybe donates some to the weeks meat pot.

If you tag the animal after you harvest it, you can give meat to your buddies if you like. Nothing in the law says you have to keep all the meat for yourself.

The etiquette is up to you, but make sure to check your States game regs for what the actual law is. People can and have been ticketed for having untagged meat in their possession.

Yeah I know it's not illegal to give them meat. I'm just wondering how other groups decide how much to give other members of the groups when they kill an elk.

Interesting question that I have never thought of. I know that the people I hunt with don't want or expect anything in return. My tag my animal, their tag their animal. No questions asked.

#1- Get this sorted out before you go!

When the animal is dead and on the ground is NOT the time to discuss.

#2- Regardless of how you divide meat, also make sure everyone understands what is expected out of them when the animal is down. (Does everyone pitch in to break down the elk and pack out. Or you kill it, your problem [Which is wrong. IMHO]

RE: Tender loins and backstrap. I celebrate the hunt with grilled TL's with all in camp. Backstraps- divide if that is part of the deal.

An elk is a big animal. There is plenty of meat to split if you go that route.

When I went with a partner, the deal was meat was split. Animal down=all hands on deck until animal is out and cooled. FYI. My partner didn't want much meat and I gave it to him anyway.

I would suggest checking with your local laws 1st, then discuss it with your hunting party. Let them know of your intentions to share your kill with them and see what they say.
Most will say thanks but not accept it. Others would love a choice cut or 2. Some who may need the meat may want a 1/4 or more. Kind of depends on the individual and how much they actually help you. Did they pack it out? Did they help you cut it up? Etc.

Good luck to you all. Maybe you will slam them and not need to divide it up!

we always do this. split evenly with all who get the work done. if another is killed then we split it the same and so on. if all tag out you keep your elk. but the guy that kills first has less tl,s for winter every time. lol also the cost of meat processing is cut into everyone who is involved.

Taste it, figure how much it will cost to get home if you are flying, then decide. I liked it, but figured also how much beef I could buy with the shipping charge. I give all but a 100 pounds away. Shipped my clothes home, had two 50 pound coolers as my luggage. I deboned mine and had a 100 pounds frooze in my coolers. No butcher fee, just freezer fee for me. I was happy and my buddies just loved the gift! To each his own!

like previously stated, decide before you go.
but we always split it evenly that way everyone gets something for their tag and hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-08 AT 01:40PM (MST)[p]We always have a money pot. There is usually 5 or 6 of us hunting and in the beginning of the hunt we all put in 2 or 3 hundred dollars each.

Every time stop for gas or food we pay for it out of the pot. When it starts getting empty we put more money in.

If we get any elk or deer we work together to get it off the mountain, pay for processing out of the pot and divide it between all of us. That way we all get to take some meat home.

Then when we get home the owner of the truck we have been driving on that particular trip gets the leftovers out of the pot, usually 2-3 hundred dollars, for wear and tear on their truck.

Completesportsman:

You hit the nail on the head. Me and the other 3 guys I go with do the exact same thing and works out great for everyone!

Make sure you hook your buddies up because I have seen some hard feelings come out of it. If they help work to get the elk then it is a good thing to help them out. Divide how you see fit.

If I help pack meat I'm getting some of it. If you want to keep all of it then your packin it.

That sounds like a good plan CompleteSportsman. 3 of us are flying out and renting a Trailblazer while the other two guys are driving. They are hauling some of our gear out there and then bringing that back plus any meat so we're planning on giving them a couple of hundred bucks for fuel.

We've got one non-hunter with us, but he'll definitely be helping with the pack out so I think he deserves an equal share.

I tried to tell everyone they should just give all the meat to me since I'm such a nice guy, but that plan has met some resistance. I'll show them pictures of my kids and tell them they will starve without it to try to garner some support. :)

Thanks for the help everyone

Ben

If you shoot 4 cows out of 5 people, who gets what meat share will not be the question as you will have about 2000lbs of meat.

I knew we would have alot of meat if we shoot 4, but I wasn't expecting a cow to have 500 lbs of meat. I was thinking a big cow would be in the 3-400 lbs range of processed meat.

Elk are big animals. They also tend to die in very nasty places. Anyone that wants to put on a packframe and help me get it back to the truck gets his or her fair share.
